  • Active control of flexural vibrations of smart laminated composite beams has been carried out using piezoceramic sensor/actuator and viscoelastic material. The beams with passive constrained layer damping have been analyzed by formulating the equations of motion through the use of extended Hamilton's principle. The dynamic characteristics such as damping ratio and modal damping of the beam are calculated for various fiber orientations by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity.

  • In this study, we present a new efficient hybrid-mixed composite laminated curved beam element. The present element, which is based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle and the first-order shear deformation lamination theory, employs consistent stress parameters corresponding to cubic displacement polynomials with additional nodeless degrees in order to resolve the numerical difficulties due to the spurious constraints. The stress parameters are eliminated and the nodeless degrees are condensed out to obtain the ($6{\times}6$) element stiffness matrix. The present study also incorporates the straightforward prediction of interlaminar stresses from equilibrium equations. Several numerical examples confirm the superior behavior of the present composite laminated curved beam element.

  • The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived for flexural vibrations of symmetrical, mu1ti-layer laminated beams. The damping radio and modal damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. Finite element method is used for the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the laminated composite beams with an ER fluid. For the validation of modeling methodology using viscoelastic theory the predicted dynamic properties are compared to the measured ones by author's previous work. They are in good agreement. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with an ER fluid.

  • In this article, analytical solution for free vibration of micro composite laminated beam on elastic medium based on modified couple stress are presented. The surrounding elastic medium is modeled as the Winkler elastic foundation. The governing equations and boundary conditions are obtained by using the principle of minimum potential energy for EulerBernoulli beam. For investigating the effect of different parameters including material length scale, beam thickness, some numerical results on different cross ply laminated beams such as (90,0,90), (0,90,0), (90,90,90) and (0,0,0) are presented on elastic medium. Free vibration analysis of a simply supported beam is considered utilizing the Fourier series. Also, the fundamental frequency is obtained using the principle of Hamilton for four types of cross ply laminations with hinged-hinged boundary conditions and different beam theories. The fundamental frequency for different thin beam theories are investigated by increasing the slenderness ratio and various foundation coefficients. The results prove that the modified couple stress theory increases the natural frequency under the various foundation for free vibration of composite laminated micro beams.

  • In this article, we presents multi-objective design optimization of laminated composite beam using Fuzzy programming method. At first, the two design objectives are minimizing the structural weight and maximizing the buckling load respectively. Fuzzy multi-optimization problem can be formulated based on results of single optimizations. Due to different relative importance of design objectives, membership functions are constructed by adding exponential parameters for different objective's weights. Finite element analysis of composite beam for buckling behavior are carried by Natural mode method proposed by J.Argyris and computational time of analysis can be reduced. With this scheme, a designer can conveniently obtain a compromise optimal solution of a multi-objective optimization problem only by providing some exponential parameters corresponding to the importance of the objective functions.

  • A problem formulation and solution for design optimization of laminated composite channel section beam is presented in this study. The objective of this study is the determination of optimum section dimensions of composite laminated channel section beam which has equivalent flexural rigidities to flexural rigidities of steel channel section beam. The analytical model is based on the laminate theory and accounts for the material coupling for arbitrary laminate stacking sequence configuration. The model is used to determine the optimal section dimensions of composite channel section beam. The web height, flange width and thickness of the beam are treated as design variables. The solutions described are found using a global search algorithm, Genetic Algorithms (GA).

  • To analyze laminated composite and sandwich beams under temperature loads, a $C^0$-type Reddy's beam theory considering transverse normal strain is proposed in this paper. Although transverse normal strain is taken into account, the number of unknowns is not increased. Moreover, the first derivatives of transverse displacement have been taken out from the in-plane displacement fields, so that the $C^0$ interpolation functions are only required for the finite element implementation. Based on the proposed model, a three-node beam element is presented for analysis of thermal responses. Numerical results show that the proposed model can accurately and efficiently analyze the thermoelastic problems of laminated composites.

  • Lateral buckling behavior of laminated composite thin-walled I-section beams subjected to bending moment is investigated by applying the nonlinear anisotropic thin-walled beam theory. The constituent laminated thin-walled elements of I-section are assumed to be symmetrically laminated. The bending, twisting, and warping stiffnesses of the cross section are obtained based on the definitions of these stiffnesses In the thin-walled anisotropic beam theory In numerical examples, singly-symmetric I-beams with specially orthotropic, quasi-isotropic, angle-plys and various boundary conditions are considered. To validate the proposed theoretical approach, present analytical solutions are compared with three dimensional finite element solutions.

  • A novel, 6-node, two-dimensional mixed finite element (FE) model has been developed to analyze laminated composite beams by using the minimum potential energy principle. The model has been formulated by considering four degrees of freedom (two displacement components u, w and two transverse stress components ${\sigma}_z$, $\tau_{xz}$) per node. The transverse stress components have been invoked as nodal degrees of freedom by using the fundamental elasticity equations. Thus, the present mixed finite element model not only ensures the continuity of transverse stress and displacement fields through the thickness of the laminated beams but also maintains the fundamental elasticity relationship between the components of stress, strain and displacement fields throughout the elastic continuum. This is an important feature of the present formulation, which has not been observed in various mixed formulations available in the literature. Results obtained from the model have been shown to be in excellent agreement with the elasticity solutions for thin as well as thick laminated composite beams. A few results for a cross-ply beam under fixed support conditions are also presented.

  • In this paper, geometrically nonlinear static analysis of laminated composite beams is investigated under hygrothermal effect. In the solution of problem, the finite element method is used within the first shear beam theory. Total Lagrangian approach is used nonlinear kinematic model. The geometrically nonlinear formulations are developed for the laminated beams with hygro-thermal effects. In the nonlinear solution of the problem, the Newton-Raphson method is used with incremental displacement. In order to verify of obtained formulations, a comparison study is performed. The effects of the fiber orientation angles, the stacking sequence of laminates, temperature rising and moisture changes on the nonlinear static displacements and configurations of the composite laminated beam are investigated in the numerical results.
