  • Seasonal and vertical variations of organic carbon and chemical oxygen demand (COD$_{Mn}$ were investigated to estimate a suitability of COD$_{Mn}$ methods as an index of the quantity of organic matter in Lake Soyang. Organic matter in the lake may be composed matters resistant to oxidation by COD$_{Mn}$ method, especially in de데 layers. Rations of COD$_{Mn}$ to TOC varied with season and depth layer in Lake Soyang. In the inflowing river, the ratios after summer monsoon were very low and significantly different compared with other seasons (p<0.0001 between after summer monsoon and other seasons by unpaired sample t-test). At the dam site the ratio was low in the deep layer. The ratios in deep layer were significantly different compared with those of upper and middle layers (p<0.0001 by paired sample t-test). In Lake Soyang COD$_{Mn}$ yielded only 40$ of TOC and the oxidation rate of COD$_{Mn}$ varied largely with season and depth. These results implied that the COD$_{Mn}$ does not seem to be an index or organic matter in lakes.

  • In many instances phosphorus is a limiting factor for eutrophication in streams, and lakes. Because wastewater treatment plant itself may be the main phosphorus source in a natural water body, removal of phosphorus in final effluent of wastewater treatment processes is required. Amongst various technologies for phosphorus removal in wastewater, adsorption technology was investigated using activated Ca-loess complex. Ca was added in loess to enhance adsorption capacity and intensity of phosphorus. Ca added loess was activated at a high temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ which turned out to be the optimum temperature. Activated Ca-loess complex below $400^{\circ}C$ had not enough strength to be applied as an activated Ca-loess pallet column in wastewater treatment process. Ca-loess complex which activated above $400^{\circ}C$ lost its adsorption capacity as the loess surface was glassified when the activation temperature reached above $400^{\circ}C$20. Even if adsorption capacity of activated Ca-loess was not very high due to the lack of abundant pores on its surface, adsorption intensity was still high because it was activated with added Ca in loess. Activated loess was made by pallets. The activated loess pallets were filled in a column, and were applied in wastewater treatment process. Using an activated Ca-loess pallet column, total phosphorus (T-P) was reduced from about 0.5 mg/l to lower than 0.1 mg/l in wastewater treatment, and ionic phosphorus (phosphate) was completely removed for the four months of pilot plant operation.

  • In this paper, I have attempted to show how the environmental controversy surrounding the Saemangeurn Reclamation Project in Korea has been framed as narrow scientific debates. First of all, science, or specifically the Expert Review Pane, has played dual roles in the controversy. On the one hand, it has contributed to illuminating the future environmental impacts of reclamation, by so doing, to providing a momentum to reconsider the project. This has significant meaning that environmental concerns successfully checked the symbolic national project of developmental era through adopting a joint-investigation scheme that guaranteed participation of environmental groups on an equal footing with the government. On the other hand, by limiting the scope and participants of discussion, it fundamentally blocked the possibilities of public debates and deliberative decision-making with full considerations of the political, social, and cultural aspects of the controversy. I have shown that this is due to the realist belief shared by both the developers and the environmentalists in Korea that 'proper' science would disclose the truth. Environmental groups, in particular, were naive in evaluating the role of scientific expertise in the controversy and neglected the political role of the Expert Review Pane as a ritual. In opposition to the realist argument, I have shown through the analysis of the water quality debates concerning the future fresh water lakes that scientific 'facts' were not discovered but constructed through complex negotiations, conflicts, and compromises among related actors. The framing of the controversy as an experts' debate has resulted in the exclusion of an important actor from the discussion. Little attention has been paid throughout the controversy to the very people who have lived in the Saemangeum area for generations and will lose their livelihood all together soon. About 20,000 fishermen are living on the Saemangeum tidal flats.

  • Archaeological waterlogged woods found under the sea, in lakes, or in swamp environments are generally weak and fragile. If waterlogged wood materials were taken out of the water and left without modification, they would collapse and lose their original dimensions completely. Conservation is performed to replace the water with chemical agents and to give dimensional stabilization and durability. EDTA and PEG are the most commonly used in the preservation of wood. pH control-precipitation method is used for recovery of EDTA from waste fluid of archeological waterlogged wood conservation treatment. The black substance is eliminated from wood as Fe-EDTA complex are formed and EDTA is separated and precipitated from Fe-EDTA complexes at pH 2.68 or less. The result of analysis of the precipitated products and the commercial EDTA by FT-IR and FE-SEM showed that precipitated product by pH adjusted was not a type of Fe-EDTA complex, but pure EDTA. Waste fluid produced in PEG treatment shows the black color and has an offensive odor by organic matter extracted from wood. Color of waste fluid is decolored with oxidation reaction by peroxy hydrate. In FT-IR and SEM-EDX of PEG after freeze-drying process, no significant change of functional groups induced from oxidation is observed, and any metal ion does not exist in the solid PEG specimen. The molecular weight of PEG is measured using GPC and viscometry. Properties of PEG before and after preservation treatment, and after oxidation with $H_2O_2$ were not changed. Consequently, the peroxidation with $H_2O_2$ is a reasonable and simple method to decolor the used PEG solution.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish effective conditions for controlling $CH_4$, $N_2O$ emission from organic Waste / wastewater treatment processes. Continuous and batch experiments were conducted to treat the micro algae from polluted and eutrophicated lakes through the thermophilic oxic process. The microalgae used were mainly Microcystis sp.(collected from eutrophic lake) and Chlorella sp. (cultured in laboratory) Wasted cooking oil was added by aid-heating source. Physico-chemical components of sludges and microalgae were analyzed. In batch experiments, air supply was changed from 50ml/min to 150ml/min. The temperature. water content and drained water were affected by the air flow rate at initial stage. However, there was almost no influence of air flow rate on them in middle and last stages. At air flow rate of 100ml/min, the degradation rate of organic material was higher than that at other air flow rates. $CO_2$ concentration in exhaust was proportional to the strength of aeration, especially at initial stage when degradation was active. $CH_4$ with low concentration was detected only at starting stage when air diffusion was not enough. $N_2O$ production was not affected by variation of air supply. In continuous experiments no matter what the dewatering methods (with PAC and without PAC) and media (wood chip and reed chip) were changed, $N_2O$ was almost not affected by variation of injected air. Result showed that the reed chips using for lake purification could be used as media for thermophilic oxic process in lake and marshes area. $CO_2$ concentration was not so much affected by the change of dewatering methods and media types. $CH_4$ was not detected in the experimental period. So it can be shown that the thermophilic oxic process had been well operated in wide handling conditions regardless of media and dewatering methods.

  • Since 1980s, wastewater treatment facilities in Korea have been rapidly expanded by 90 percent as the government invested them continuously. Considering social and environmental factors such as the needs of alternative water resources for water shortages, energy saving and new energy production sources for decrease of greenhouse gases, and the demand for the improvement of the water quality in rivers and lakes, advanced technologies in wastewater treatment are essential in the 21st century. In this aspect, new conceptual technology is systematically combined with the advanced treatment technology such as the control and treatment technology of hazardous and toxic material, customized reusing skill, and energy saving/recovery technology. The new R&D project for advanced technology of wastewater treatment and reuse will focus on these advanced technologies which will improve the water quality and foster the competitiveness in world environmental markets, building a solid foundation particularly in the market of developing countries. The project will be divided up into high quality reusing of wastewater, energy self-sufficiency, and integrated management system. It will be carried out for five years, 2011~2015, as Phase I.

  • To understand contribution of thermophilic microorganisms in decomposition of litter deposits on shore of lakes, we surveyed a lakeshore litter deposit for bacteria growing at $60^{\circ}C$. Ten thermophilic isolates were selected for in-depth characterization, based on their high capacity to degrade high molecular weight organic compounds. Based on phylogenetic analysis on their 16S rRNA gene sequences, all isolates were identified as Geobacillus. The optimal growth temperature and pH of the strains ranged $55{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ and 6.0${\sim}$8.0, respectively. Salinity was inhibitory to the growth of the isolates, showing marked decrease of growth rates at 3% salinity. Based on activities of hydrolytic enzymes and profiles of carbohydrate utilization (determined by API 50 CHB kit), three G. stearothermophilus strains showed patterns clearly distinctive from other isolates. Two G. kaustophilus strains also demonstrated distinctiveness in their metabolic pattern and ecological parameters. However, ecological and metabolic profiles of the other five isolates were more variable and showed some degree of digression from their phylogenetic classification. Therefore, it could be concluded that endospore-forming thermophilic bacteria in lakeshore litter deposits contribute to degradation of organic materials with diverse ecological niches while having successions similar to microbial flora in compost. We propose that the thermophilic isolates and/or their thermo-tolerant enzymes can be applied to industrial processes as appropriate mixtures.

  • In this study, through the analysis of the growth condition and prey of the largemouth bass, we tried to understand the characteristics of the aquatic animal community depending on the composition and shape of a artificial lake. The evaluation was conducted for Ilsan lake which is one of the largest urban artificial lakes in Korea. Weight gain rate of the Zone III (eco-zone) was more rapid based on the relationship of length and weight of largemouth bass. Total 16 and 9 species of fish were found in each Zone III and Zone I, II (artificial zones), which represented significantly higher diversity of fish species in Zone III than Zone I, II. Index of relative importance(IRI) was more diverse at Zone III and when considering the hunger rate the food stress was more serious at Zone I, II. the proportion of the population of fish, Zacco platypus revealed to be the dominant species, and Squalidus gracilis majimae and Rhinogobius brunneus inhabited only Zone III naturally rich. On account of low prey species diversity of Zone I, II, the Phylum Arthropoda like Heteroptera showed relatively higher prey ratio in stomach of largemouth bass than that of Zone III. It was possible to figure out aquatic animal community characteristics indirectly through analyzing the stomach contents of largemouth bass.

  • Algae blooms have soared recently in the lakes across the nation due to eutrophication. Blue-green algae cause unpleasant scene, produce taste and odor problem, and hinder processes in drinking water treatment. Algae toxicity monitoring has been strengthened, because the damages of wild lives and livestocks by algal toxins have been reported. Investigation on the characteristics of cyanobacterial occurrence and concentration distribution of Cyanotoxins in Hoeya reservoir have been conducted. Physical and chemical influences of water environment on cyanobacterial occurrences have also been studied. Movements of four species of Microcystin and five species of Anatoxin-a among Cyanotoxins were observed by LC-MS/MS analysis. Microcystis spp. among the cyanobacteria have mainly dominated in the Hoeya reservoir during the investigating period. The density of cyanobacteria were positively correlated with temperature and pH of water. Highest concentrations of Microcystin-LR and Microcystin-RR were $0.424{\mu}g/L$ and $0.117{\mu}g/L$ at the sampling points. Total concentration of Cyanotoxins in water coming into the water treatment plant was $0.182{\mu}g/L$, and they were not detected in treated water.

  • Anatoxin-a is a cyanobacterial neurotoxin with a high toxicity produced by Anabaena, Aphanizomenon and Oscillatoria. Water bloom, formed by Anabaena has been occurring frequently in Lake Yeongchun. It is need to develop a sensitive method for determination of anatoxin-a to control potential hazard in raw water resources. In this study, we developed a highly sensitive analytical method of anatoxin-a using solid phase extraction (SPE) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection. Anatoxin-a was converted into a highly fluorescent derivative using 4-fuoro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBF-F). The method was evaluated in terms of linearity of calibration curve, recovery and repeatability, and the adequate values were obtained. The method detection limit was $0.034\;{\mu}g/g$ and $0.022\;{\mu}g/L$ for algal and water samples, respectively. The concentrations of anatoxin-a were measured in algal and water samples from Lake Andong, Yeongchun and Daechung and ranged from $0.135\;{\mu}g/g$ to $10.979\;{\mu}g/g$ in algal samples and not detected in water samples.
