Animal models have been used to elucidate the pathophysiology of varying diseases and to provide insight into potential targets for therapeutic intervention. Although alternatives to animal testing have been proposed to help overcome potential drawbacks related to animal experiments and avoid ethical issues, their use remains vital for the testing of new drug candidates and to identify the most effective strategies for therapeutic intervention. Particularly, the study of metabolic diseases requires the use of animal models to monitor whole-body physiology. In line with this, the National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation (NIFDS) in Korea has established their own animal strains to help evaluate both efficacy and safety during new drug development. The objective of this study was to characterize the response of C57BL/6NKorl mice from the NIFDS compared with that of other mice originating from the USA and Japan in a chemical-induced diabetic condition. Multiple low-dose treatments with streptozotocin were used to generate a type-1 diabetic animal model which is closely linked to the known clinical pathology of this disease. There were no significantly different responses observed between the varying streptozotocin-induced type-1 diabetic models tested in this study. When comparing control and diabetic mice, increases in liver weight and disturbances in serum amino acids levels of diabetic mice were most remarkable. Although the relationship between type-1 diabetes and BCAA has not been elucidated in this study, the results, which reveal a characteristic increase in diabetic mice of all origins are considered worthy of further study.

The requirements for powerful computing capability, high capacity, low latency and low energy consumption of emerging services, pose severe challenges to the fifth-generation (5G) network. As a promising paradigm, mobile edge networks can provide services in proximity to users by deploying computing components and cache at the edge, which can effectively decrease service delay. However, the coexistence of heterogeneous services and the sharing of limited resources lead to the competition between various services for multiple resources. This paper considers two typical heterogeneous services: computing services and content delivery services, in order to properly configure resources, it is crucial to develop an effective offloading and caching strategies. Considering the high energy consumption of 5G base stations, this paper considers the hybrid energy supply model of traditional power grid and green energy. Therefore, it is necessary to design a reasonable association mechanism which can allocate more service load to base stations rich in green energy to improve the utilization of green energy. This paper formed the joint optimization problem of computing offloading, caching and resource allocation for heterogeneous services with the objective of minimizing the on-grid power consumption under the constraints of limited resources and QoS guarantee. Since the joint optimization problem is a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem that is impossible to solve, this paper uses deep reinforcement learning method to learn the optimal strategy through a lot of training. Extensive simulation experiments show that compared with other schemes, the proposed scheme can allocate resources to heterogeneous service according to the green energy distribution which can effectively reduce the traditional energy consumption.
The areas consisting of frost susceptible soils in cold regions, such as the Arctic area, have problems of frost heave and thaw settlement due to the seasonal air temperature changes and internal temperature of installed structures. Ground stabilization methods for preventing frost heave and thaw settlement of frost susceptible soils include trenching, backfilling and thermo-syphon. The thermo-syphon is the method in which refrigerant can control the ground temperature by transferring the ground temperature to atmosphere in the from of two-phase flow through the heat circulation of the internal refrigerant. This numerical study applied the function of these thermo-syphon as the boundary condition through user-subroutine coding inside ABAQUS and compared and analyzed the temperature results of laboratory experiments.

Mist-CVD is known to have advantages of low cost and high productivity method since the precursor solution is misting with an ultrasonic generator and reacted on the substrate under vacuum-free conditions of atmospheric pressure. However, since the deposition distribution is not uniform, various efforts have been made to derive optimal conditions by changing the angle of the substrate and the position of the outlet to improve the result of the preceding study. Therefore, in this study, a deposition distribution uniformity model was derived through the shape and position of the substrate support and the conditions of inlet flow rate using the particle tracking method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results of analysis were compared with the previous studies through experiment. It was confirmed that the rate of deposition area was improved from 38.7% to 100%, and the rate of deposition uniformity was 79.07% which was higher than the predicted result of simulation. Particle tracking method can reduce trial and error in experiments and can be considered as a reliable prediction method.

An algorithm is proposed for estimating dynamic displacements of a bridge by using FBG sensors and by superposing some measurable low modes. Modal displacements are obtained from the beam theory and the generalized coordinates are deduced from the strains measured by FBG sensors. By considering flexural and torsional modes occurred in bridges only as flexural modes of a simply supported beam by separating a bridge into multiple girders or parts, the proposed algorithm can be applied to various types of bridges. Guidelines are provided theoretically for determining the number of modes and the number of strain gages to be used. The proposed algorithm has been examined through simulation studies on various types of bridges, laboratory experiments on a model bridge, and field tests on a simple span PC Box girder bridge. Through the simulation study, the effects of the error in the vibration modes and measurement noise on estimating the dynamic displacements are analyzed.
This research is to evaluate the fire extinguishing performance at a mixing ratio of pressurized air in the fire extinguishing system of compressed air foam (CAF) which injects compressed air into foam liquid and then discharging. The experimental device is made use of exclusive foam extinguishing facility for compressed air foam that is produces based on Canada National Laboratory and UL 162 standard, apply model of oil fire (B Class) 20 unit in accordance with "Standard of Model Approval and Product Inspection for Fire Extinguishing Agent" to the fire Extinguishing model. Compressed air is injected through the air mixture and study the tendency depending on increasing air foam ratio 1 : 4, 1 : 7, 1 : 10. In addition, the comparison experiments between synthetic surfactants foam and AFFF carry out with it at the air foam ratio 1 : 4. As a result, in the condition of same discharging flow, fire extinguishing effect of AFFF is the fastest at the air foam ratio 1 : 7 and the slowest at 1 : 10. Moreover, the fire extinguishing effect of AFFF in the comparison expeiments between AFFF and synthetic surfactants foam is faster than the other.

The international EARTHSHINE mission is to measure 1% anomaly of the Earth global albedo and total solar irradiance using Amon-Ra instrument around Lagrange point 1. We developed a new ray truing based integrated end-to-end simulation tool that overcomes the shortcomings of the existing end-to-end performance simulation techniques. We then studied the in-orbit radiometric performance of the breadboard Anon-Ra visible channel optical system. The TSI variation and the Earth albedo anomaly, reported elsewhere, were used as the key input variables in the simulation. The output flux at the instrument focal plane confirms that the integrated ray tracing based end-to-end science simulation delivers the correct level of incident power to the Amon-Ra instrument well within the required measurement error budget of better than ${\pm}0.28%$. Using the global angular distribution model (ADM), the incident flux is then used to estimate the Earth global albedo and the TSI variation, confirming the validity of the primary science cases at the L1 halo orbit. These results imply that the integrated end-to-end ray tracing technique, reported here, can serve as an effective and powerful building block of the on-line science analysis tool in support of the international EARTHSHINE mission currently being developed.

Tracer experiments were carried out on two laboratory modes, "without media mode" and "with media mode", to examine the hydraulic characteristics of the anaerobic fluidized bed bioreactor (AFBR). For both configurations, a formula was derived for the hydraulics and data interpretation to obtain the actual characteristics of the reactor. The dispersion model is based on the assumption that carriers are non-reacting and the dispersion coefficient is constant. The model represents the one-dimensional unsteady-state concentration distribution of the non-reacting tracer in the reactors. The experimental results showed that the media increased the mixing conditions in the reactor considerably. For the reactor without media, in the range tested, the dispersion coefficient was at least an order of magnitude smaller than that of the reactor with media. Advective transport dominates and the flow pattern approaches the plug flow reactor (PFR) regime. The dispersion coefficient increased significantly as us, the superficial liquid velocity, was increased proportionally to 0.82cm/s. On the other hand, for the reactor with media, the flow pattern was in between a PFR and a completely mixed flow reactor (CMFR) regime, and the dispersion coefficient was saturated at us=0.41cm/s, remaining relatively constant, even at us=0.82cm/s. The dispersion coefficient depends strongly on the liquid Reynolds number (Re) or the particle Reynolds number (Rep) over the range tested.

Trihalomethane removal efficiency by a fixed bed carbon adsorber was a subject of this study. Along with laboratory scale column operations, a simple adsorption model was developed to predict removal efficiency. The adsorption model includes an overall mass transfer coefficient, K and Freundlich adsorption constants, $K_F$ and n. Simulation results showed that increasing K and $K_F$ or decreasing n would take more loading and prolong run time of the adsorption bed. Typical S-shaped breakthrough curves were obtained from the experiments. The operational results at $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ indicated that a moderate difference in water temperature would not affect the treatment efficiency significantly. The adsorption constants determined from the column operation and the model simulation were reasonably close to those obtained from the isotherm test. It may be concluded that trihalomethane can be removed successfully by a fixed bed carbon adsorber.
Foam reduces the mobility of gas phase in porous media to overcome gravity override and to divert acid into desired layers in the petroleum industry and to enhance the efficiency of environmental remediation. Recent experimental studies on foam show that foam exhibits a remarkably different flow rheology depending on the flow regime. This study, for the first time, focuses on the issues of foam diversion process under the conditions relevant to groundwater remediation, combining results from laboratory linear-flow experiments and a simple numerical model with permeability contrasts. Linear flow tests performed at two different permeabilities (k = 9.1 and 30.4 darcy) confirmed that two flow regimes of steady-state strong foams were also observed within the permeability range of shallow geological formations. Foam exhibited a shear-thinning behavior in a low-quality regime and near Newtonian rheology in a high-quality regime. Data taken from linear flow tests were incorporated into a simple numerical model to evaluate the efficiency of foam diversion process in the presence of permeability contrasts. The simple model illustrated that foam in the high-quality regime exhibited a successful diversion but foam in the low-quality regime resulted in anti-diversion, implying that only foam in the high-quality regime would be applicable to the diversion process. Sensitivity study proved that the success of diversion process using foam in the high-quality regime was primarily controlled by the limiting capillary pressures (${P_c}{^*}$) of the two layers of interest. Limitations and implications are also discussed and included.
