  • As construction projects have been getting larger and more complex, a single individual or organization cannot have complete knowledge or the abilities to handle all matters. Collaborative practices among heterogeneous individuals, which are temporarily congregated to carry out a project, are required in order to accomplish project objectives. These organizational knowledge creation processes of project teams should be understood from the active and dynamic viewpoint of how they create information and knowledge rather than from the passive and static input-process-output sequence. To this end, agent-based modeling and simulation which is built from the ground-up perspective can provide the most appropriate way to systematically investigate them. In this paper, agent-based modeling and simulation as a research method and a medium for representing theory is introduced. To illustrate, an agent-based simulation of the evolution of collaboration in large-scale project teams from a game theory and social network perspective is presented.

  • Selection of finishing materials in the design stage is an important management factor in terms of use safety and satisfaction, and work cost and process. However, selection of materials in the design stage is usually conducted without related guidelines or a set process, but depends on the experience of the architect or advice of materials company employees. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a finishing materials selection process that can be used by a architect. Materials selection related rules collected through interview with experts and five office building cases were used as knowledge. In addition, another aim of the study was to propose a prototype system interface for use in the field.

  • Distributed cooperative information system is the one that has various knowledge sources as well as problem solving capabilities to get information in a distributed and heterogeneous data environment. In a distributed cooperative information system. a control mechanism to facilitate the available information is very important. and usually the role of the control mechanism determines the behavior of the total system In this research. we proposed a model of the distributed cooperative information system which is based on the multi-agent paradigm. We also implemented a test system to show l its feasibility. The proposed system makes the knowledge sources into agents and a special agent called 'facilitator' controls the cooperation between the knowledge agents The facilitator uses the knowledge granularity level to determine the sequence of the activation of the agents. In other words. the knowledge source with simple but fast processing mechanism activates first while more sophisticated but slow knowledge sources are activated late. In an environment in which we have several knowledge sources for the same topic. the proposed system will simulate the focusing mechanism of human cognitive process.

  • This paper diagnoses the financial knowledge of the college students and their values on financial situation. Another emphasis is given to the classification of surveyed college students based on their financial knowledge and values and the financial traits of each classified group is also analyzed. Statistical analysis was conducted using Cronbach's ${\partial}$, factor analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple range test with total number of 733 questionnaires. Primary results of the research are as follows: First, overall score of financial knowledge was 62.65 points, showing the highest points in spending while lowest in savings and investment. Senior classes, students majoring in liberal arts, students with financial education and media experiences scored high points. Second, overall score of college students on financial values was 3.92, resulting in high points on credit and frugality but points on sharing with others were low. Thirdly, all surveyed students were classified into 4 types based on the mean scores on financial knowledges and values. Total 31.7% of students belonged to Type 1 where students scored high points on financial knowledge and values. Type 2 had about 22.4 % of students whose financial score was high but value score was low. Type 3 occupied 24.2% and this group scored low points on financial knowledge but high points on financial values. Type 4 occupied 21.8% and was a group of students whose scores for financial knowledge and values were low. Finally, Type 1 and 3 groups showed better desirable behaviors for financial management and expressed higher satisfaction status for finance than Type 2 and 4. Type 1 is a group of students whose subjective financial level was high. Monthly income was highest in Type 2 and financial stress was lowest in Type 1.

  • High school students' understanding hierarchy of astronomical concepts and an individual student's knowledge state are analyzed by using the knowledge space theory that allows one to infer an individual's entire knowledge on a subject based on fragmentary information coming from that student's answers. The hierarchy of astronomical space concepts is: spatial position$\ll$spatial reasoning$\ll$spatial variation. In addition, an analysis of assessment materials using the knowledge space theory shows not only the relationship of assessment questions but also the knowledge state of individual students, which the current evaluation method is not able to reveal. Therefore, the assessment analysis of this study using the knowledge space theory becomes critically instrumental in providing information of an instructional differentiation amenable to individual learners for deciding their level of understanding and selecting suitable curriculum.

  • This paper presents a knowledge-based electrical fire cause diagnosis system using the fuzzy reasoning. The cause diagnosis of electrical fires may be approached either by studying electric facilities or by investigating cause using precision instruments at the fire site. However, cause diagnosis methods for electrical fires haven't been systematized yet. The system focused on database(DB) construction and cause diagnosis can diagnose the causes of electrical fires easily and efficiently. The cause diagnosis system for the electrical fire was implemented with entity-relational DB systems using Access 2000, one of DB development tools. Visual Basic is used as a DB building tool. The inference to confirm fire causes is conducted on the knowledge-based by combined approach of a case-based and a rule-based reasoning. A case-based cause diagnosis is designed to match the newly occurred fire case with the past fire cases stored in a DB by a kind of pattern recognition. The rule-based cause diagnosis includes intelligent objects having fuzzy attributes and rules, and is used for handling knowledge about cause reasoning. A rule-based using a fuzzy reasoning has been adopted. To infer the results from fire signs, a fuzzy operation of Yager sum was adopted. The reasoning is conducted on the rule-based reasoning that a rule-based DB system built with many rules derived from the existing diagnosis methods and the expertise in fire investigation. The cause diagnosis system proposes the causes obtained from the diagnosis process and showed possibility of electrical fire causes.

  • Knowledge management strategy is considered a key determinant of successful knowledge management. However, theoretical and empirical researchers disagree on how knowledge management strategies improve firms' performance. The inconsistent results of prior studies may be attributed to the fact that complementary relationships among knowledge management strategies have not been adequately taken into consideration. While the previous literature has focused on investigating the impact of knowledge sourcing strategies on firms' performance one-at-a-time, in reality firms adopt several different knowledge management strategies together. By drawing on complementarity theory, this study revisits this research problem and develops three complementarity hypotheses. Surveys collected from 139 firms in Korea were analyzed to test the hypotheses by using super modularity function. The results confirmed complementary relationships between system- and person-oriented, and between internal- and external-oriented knowledge management strategies. Our results found no complementarity among the four different knowledge management strategies. This study sheds new light on knowledge management research by developing a new conceptual framework and using advanced analytical approaches to explore the relationship between knowledge management strategies and firms' performance. Implications for practice highlight that a successful knowledge management strategy requires a judicious combination of system- and person-oriented, or of internal- and external-oriented knowledge management strategies.

  • Mathematics teachers' knowledge and abilities for effective mathematics teaching has been discussed by many mathematics educators and researchers. This study surveyed the perspectives on the knowledge and abilities for good mathematics teaching of inservice and preservice teachers based on their teaching experiences. The perspectives of the two teacher groups about teachers' knowledge and abilities for teaching mathematics are very different. The results from this study are expected to give information on developing teacher education curriculum and programs.
