In this study, we analyzed the phylogenetic characterization of root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) in soils from fruits and vegetables greenhouses in Korea. Soil samples were collected from 12 greenhouse fields in which tomato, cucumber, watermelon, and Oriental melon were being cultivated. Meloidogyne spp. were detected in all the soil samples at an average number of $72{\pm}6$ nematodes/300 g of soil to $2,898{\pm}468$ nematodes/300 g of soil. Phylogenetic analysis using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism was attempted for the second-stage juveniles (J2) of Meloidogyne spp. collected from the greenhouse soils. Twelve Meloidogyne spp. from the greenhouse soils were classified into two groups by using HinfI digestion of mitochondrial DNA, resulting in 900, 410, 290, and 170 bp fragments (group A) and 900, 700, and 170 bp fragments (group B). Phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial DNA sequences (1,483-1,521 bp) showed that nine group A isolates were identified as Meloidogyne incognita (99.73-99.93%) and three group B isolates showed 99.54-99.73% similarity to Meloidogyne arenaria.
Purpose: Pledget is a PTFE felt that is usually used for suture reinforcement in cardiovascular surgery. In order to minimize the difficulty in intracorporeal continuous gastrointestinal suturing by reducing the number of tied knots, we have used pledget as substitute for a knot (pledget suturing). Materials and Methods: Thirty-two consecutive patients who underwent totally laparoscopic uncut Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy after distal gastrectomy in our institution were enrolled in this study, and the patients were divided into three groups according to the method of intracorporeal anastomosis. Basically, intracorporeal anastomosis was performed by several firings of linear staplers; however, the entry holes for the stapler at the jejunojejunostomy and the gastrojejunostomy were closed by pledget suturing in group A (8 patients), the entry hole for the stapler at jejunojejunostomy was closed by conventional suturing in group B (8 patients), and all of the entry holes for the stapler were closed by stapling in group C (16 patients). The surgical outcomes of each group were compared to each other. Results: The anastomotic time in group A was not longer than in group B, although there were more sutures used in group A, but it was longer than in group C. The number of stapler cartridges used in group A was the smallest among the three groups. In group B, there were two cases of a break of suture material during anastomosis, there were no such cases in group A. There was no complication related to anastomosis in all of the groups. Conclusion: Pledget was found to be useful for minimizing the difficulty in intracoproreal continuous gastrointestinal suturing and reducing the number of stapler cartilages used in intracorporeal anastomosis.

This study investigated the decomposing activities on gelatin and egg sac of root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita). Ten Bacillus isolates (KRB-1~10) isolated from the soils of Mt. Naejang. Among them, KRB-5, 9, and 10 showed decomposing activities, and identified as Bacillus subtilis KRB-5, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens KRB-9, and KRB-10 by 16S rRNA sequence analysis, respectively. Under pot experiments using pepper, 100-fold diluted culture broth of three isolates reduced the number of egg sac on roots collected 60 days and 90 days and increased the growth of aerial part compared with the group only treated with Meloidogyne incognita. Especially, the group treated B. subtilis KRB-5 was superior in the growth of pepper. These results suggest that the B. subtilis KRB-5 can be used to control the root-knot nematode on pepper.
The Property P Conjecture States that the 3-manifold $Y_r$ obtained by Dehn surgery on a non-trivial knot in $S^3$ with surgery coefficient ${\gamma}{\in}Q$ has the non-trivial fundamental group (so not simply connected). Recently Kronheimer and Mrowka provided a proof of the Property P conjecture for the case ${\gamma}={\pm}2$ that was the only remaining case to be established for the conjecture. In particular, their results show that the two phenomena of having a cyclic fundamental group and having a homomorphism with non-cyclic image in SU(2) are quite different for 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn filings. In this paper we extend their results to some other Dehn surgeries via the A-polynomial, and provide more evidence of the ubiquity of the above mentioned phenomena.

The purpose of designing composite lattice structure which applied to launching vehicle and tactical missile body is to minimize the thickness and weight for applied load. It is usually made of carbon fiber; fabricating with filament winding process over silicon mold, and provided with a window opening for inspection purpose if necessary. In this paper compression test is conducted without window opening in lattice structure and preliminary FEA is carried out to confirm its accuracy. And then FEA is performed for the case of window opening to evaluate the soundness and the safety factor of the structure. We have calculated for two kinds of window shape; rectangular one and hexagonal one. And we have calculated safety factors of the lattice structure with window opening in every case based on failure strength of rib and knot with varying the thickness and location of the window for hexagonal shape. Through our investigation, we have found out the followings; (1) the hexagonal shaped window is shown higher safety factor than rectangular one, (2) a window in a certain location is shown higher safety factor than others, (3) although the soundness of window structure is improved as increasing its thickness, a window of a certain thickness is shown higher safety factor than others because of stress concentration.
The purpose of this study is to propose a topological design principles and to analyze the space of digital architecture applying topological invariant expressive characteristics. As this study is based on topology as a science of true world's pattern, we intented to explain the concepts and provide some methods of low-level and hyperspace topological invariant Properties. Four major aspects are discussed. Those are connection theory, boundary concept, homotopy group, knot Pattern theory as topological invariant properties. Then we intented to make understand topological characteristics of the Algorithms, luring machine, cellular automata, string theory, membrane, DNA and supramolecular chemistry. In fine, the topological invariant properties of the digital architecture as genetic algorithms based on self-organization and heterogeneous networks of interacting actors can be analyzed and used as a critical tool. Therefore topology can be provided endless possibilities for architecture, designers and scientists intended in expressing the more complex and organic patterns of nature as life.
The evaluation of safety of simulated maneuvers is frequently analysed by so called goal-line or point of interest in Korea. For the purpose of warning the risk in the proximity measure composed of only the goal-line analysis, this paper utilized Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology(KIMFT) which houses a real-time, full-mission shiphandling simulator to examine the goal-line and in-length analyses in the outbound channel of Kwangyang port as an example. It used a 15,000 TEU container ship as a model under environmental conditions of the northwestly 26-knot wind and 2.2-knot ebb current. The result of two analyses showed the probability invading the channel boundary obtained by the goal-line analysis is a little greater than that of the in-length analysis. Therefore it was acknowledged that the proximity measure by the goal-line analysis alone may be followed by some risk. In addition, this paper was to suggest the closest distance to channel boundary from the ship's edge as one of proximity measures, instead of using the ship's deviation from the centerline of channel.
Purpose: The purpose of our study was to perform a comparison of the outcomes of the modified Brostrom procedure using only a suture anchor compared with using a suture anchor with a pushlock anchor. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study of chronic lateral ankle instability that underwent a modified Brostrom procedure using a bioabsorbable suture anchor & a pushlock anchor, performed by a single surgeon. A total of 88 patients were enrolled in the study. The function of the patient's ankles were scored using the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), visual analogue scale (VAS) both preoperatively and postoperatively. Results: The difference in the overall means between the group A and group B was not statistically significant. But, the patient's satisfaction was better in the group B, and there were more complications in the group A. Conclusion: The technique presented here uses the modified Brostrom procedure with pushlock anchors to prevent the problems associated with subcutaneous knot irritation.

tRNA (m¹ G37) methyltransferase (TrmD) catalyze s the trans for of a methyl group from S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet) to G/sup 37/ within a subset of bacterial tRNA species, which have a residue G at 36th position. The modified guanosine is adjacent to and 3' of the anticodon and is essential for the maintenance of the correct reading frame during translation. We have determined the first crystal structure of TrmD from Haemophilus influenzae, as a binary complex with either AdoMet or S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine (AdoHcy), as a ternary complex with AdoHcy/phosphate, and as an apo form. The structure indicates that TrmD functions as a dimer (Figure 1). It also suggests the binding mode of G/sup 36/G/sup 37/ in the active site of TrmD and catalytic mechanism. The N-terminal domain has a trefoil knot, in which AdoMet or AdoHcy is bound in a novel, bent conformation. The C-terminal domain shows a structural similarity to DNA binding domain of trp or tot repressor. We propose a plausible model for the TrmD₂-tRNA₂ complex, which provides insights into recognition of the general tRNA structure by TrmD (Figure 2).
Pitch pine (Pinus rigida) has been planted in Korean forests for several decades, primarily for erosion control and use as a fuel supply. To enhance its value, and especially potential use as lamina for structural glued laminated timber (glulam), log quality and lumber yield of pitch pine were evaluated in this study. Trees from pure pitch pine stands with an average diameter at breast height of 32 cm were felled and bucked into 3.6m long 15 cm minimum butt-end diameter logs. Over 80% of the logs were classified to No.2 or No.3 visual grade group. Upon sawing total lumber yield was 55.2%, 39.9% for structural glulam lamina, 7.2% for louver, and 8.1% for miscellaneous use. The final lumber yield for manufacturing structural glulam, after cross-cutting to eliminate knots and finger jointing, was only 15.3%. To enhance this manufacturing yield requires that the rate of knot-included lumber used as lamina be raised. However arrangement of the knot-included lamina, whose mechanical properties need to be accurately evaluated, must be optimized to minimize any reduction to the structural glulam strength. The log quality and lumber yield of pitch pine evaluated in this study are expected to facilitate proper planning for wood product manufacture in the Korean lumbering and glulam industrial field, which has not previously dealt with this species.
