  • In this paper, we have systematically formulated the equations concerned to the in-plane and out-of-plane motions and deformations of a thick circular beam by using the kinetic and strain energies in order to analyse natural frequencies of a thick ring. The effects of variation of radius of curvature across the cross-section and also the effects of bending shear, extension and twist are considered. The equations of motion for natural vibration analysis of a ring are obtained utilizing the cyclic symmetry of vibration modes of the ring. The frequencies calculated using thick ring model and thin ring model are compared and discussed with the ones obtained from finite element analysis using the method of cyclic symmetry with 20-node hexahedral solid elements for rings with the different ratio of radial thickness to mean radius.

  • In this paper, a theoretical study is carried out on the hydroelastic vibration of a rectangular tank wall. It is assumed that the tank wall is clamped along the plate edges. The fluid velocity potential is used for the simulation of fluid domain and to obtain the added mass due to wall vibration. In addition, the vibration characteristics of stiffened wall of the rectangular tank are investigated. Assumed mode method is utilized to the stiffened plate model and hydrodynamic force is obtained by the proposed approach. The coupled natural frequencies are obtained from the relationship between kinetic energies of a wall including fluid and the potential energy of the wall. The theoretical result is compared with the three-dimensional finite element method and then added mass effect is discussed due to tank length and potential mode.

  • This paper dealt with an experimental study on the hydroelastic vibration of clamped perforated rectangular plates submerged in water. The penetration of holes in the plates had a triangular pattern with P/D (pitch to diameter) 1.750, 2.125, 2.500, 3.000 and 3.750. The natural frequencies of the perforated plates in air were obtained by the analytical method based on the relation between the reference kinetic and maximum potential energies and compared with the experimental results. • The wind-induced mean, background and resonant responses of Beijing National Stadium are investigated in this paper. Based on the concepts of potential and kinetic energies, the mode participation factors for the background and the resonant components are presented and the dominant modes are identified. The coupling effect between different modes of the resonant response and the coupling effect between the background and resonant responses are analyzed. The coupling effects between the background and resonant components and between different modes are found all negligible. The mean response is approximately analogous to the peak responses induced by the fluctuating wind. The background responses are significant in the fluctuating responses and it is much larger than the resonant responses at the measurement locations.

  • DLC thin films have been fabricated by pulsed laser deposition with various deposition parameters. The characterization of fabricated thin films was performed depending on the deposition parameters. As the kinetic energies provided by deposition temperature and the laser energy density were increased, the film showed graphite properties. Structural properties of the films were investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The growth energy should be optimized to fabricate high quality DLC thin films. DLC films showed high hardness and their friction coefficient was measured to be about 0.2 regardless of the load of the ball pin.

  • This paper describes the procedure of increasing the efficiency of experimental modal analysis and updating the quality of FE model using the scaled commercial vehicle frame. In this study, it was found that the experimental modal analysis could be more efficient when the measurements were made on the areas with high kinetic energies. Such areas could be located with the aid of FE modal analysis. Also, the number of measurement points could be decided by considering the dynamic characteristics of full FE model. The correlation of FE model and experimental modal analysis was assessed by the differences between the natural frequencies and MAC matrix, which is based on normal modes. These differences of modal parameters were reduced through the sensitivity and optimization analysis of which objective function consisted of the errors of natural frequencies and the diagonal terms of MAC matrix.

  • This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling of transmission line undergoing galloping vibrations. To this end, the kinetic and potential energies of a uniform wire vibrating in space are derived. The equations of motion suitable for numerical simulations are derived using the assumed mode method and Lagrange equation. The resulting equations of motion are expressed in matrix form. To cope with bundled transmission line, the spacer was modelled by a spring element. As a numerical example, a two-wire transmission line combined by spacers was considered. Natural vibration characteristics show that the in-plane vibrations of the transmission line appeared in low frequency range, which may lead to galloping.

  • A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies of eccentric hemi-spherical shells of revolution with variable thickness. Unlike conventional shell theories, which are mathematically two-dimensional (2-D), the present method is based upon the 3-D dynamic equations of elasticity. Displacement components $u_r$, $u_{\Theta}$, and $u_z$ in the radial, circumferential, and axial directions, respectively, are taken to be periodic in ${\theta}$ and in time, and algebraic polynomials in the r and z directions. Potential and kinetic energies of eccentric hemi-spherical shells with variable thickness are formulated, and the Ritz method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem, thus yielding upper bound values of the frequencies by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Convergence to three or four-digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of the shells. Numerical results are presented for a variety of eccentric hemi-spherical shells with variable thickness.

  • A test-area molecular dynamics simulation method for the vapor-liquid interface of argon through a Lennard-Jones intermolecular potential is presented in this paper as a primary study of interfacial systems. We found that the calculated density profile along the z-direction normal to the interface is not changed with time after equilibration and that the values of surface tension computed from this test-area method are fully consistent with the experimental data. We compared the thermodynamic properties of vapor argon, liquid argon, and argon in the vapor-liquid interface. Comparisons are made with kinetic and potential energies, diffusion coefficient, and viscosity.
