In the current study, reduction of springback is quantified and the reasons for the reduction are investigated. The testing involved a digital servo motion applied to a U-draw bending to produce a hat-type product from high strength steels such as DP780 and DP980. The change in springback is compared between the constant speed motion and three kinds of servocontrolled motions during forming experiments. In order to predict the springback for the servo-controlled tool motion, a finite element method was utilized for the springback analysis considering a kinematic hardening model for the steel. The comparison of springback between the analysis and the experiments shows that they have similar tendencies. Also, the analysis results indicate that the springback reduction is greatly influenced by a decrease in the friction coefficient, which originates from the contact and detach phenomena between the tooling and the blank during the up-and-down motion of the upper die following the servo-controlled motion.

Fretting fatigue is often the root cause of the nucleation of cracks at attachments of structural components. Since fretting fatigue damage accumulation occurs over relatively small volumes, the subsurface cyclic plastic strain is expected to be rather non-uniformly distributed in polycrystalline materials. The scale of the cyclic plasticity and the damage process zones is often on the order of microstructure dimensions. Fretting damage analyses using cyclic crystal plasticity constitutive models have the potential to account for the influence of size, morphology, and crystallographic orientation of grains on fretting damage evolution. Two-dimensional plane strain simulations of fretting fatigue are performed using the cyclic properties of Ti-6Al-4V. The crystal plasticity simulations are compared to an initially isotropic $J_{2}$ theory with nonlinear kinematic hardening as well as to experiments. The influence of initially isotropic versus textured microstructure in the presence of crystallographic slip is studied.
In the present work, the elasto-viscoplastic behavior, interactions between grains, and the texture evolution in polycrystalline materials subjected to finite deformations are modeled using a multiscale analysis procedure within a finite element framework. Computational homogenization is used to relate the grain (meso) scale to the macroscale. Specifically, a polycrystal is modeled by a material representative volume element (RVE) consisting of an aggregate of grains, and a periodic distribution of such unit cells is considered to describe material behavior locally on the macroscale. The elastic behavior is defined by a hyperelastic potential, and the viscoplastic response is modeled by a simple power law complemented by a work hardening equation. The finite element framework is based on a Lagrangian formulation, where a kinematic split of the deformation gradient into volume preserving and volumetric parts together with a three-field form of the Hu-Washizu variational principle is adopted to create a stable finite element method. Examples involving simple deformations of an aluminum alloy are modeled to predict inhomogeneous fields on the grain scale, and the macroscopic effective stress-strain curve and texture evolution are compared to those obtained using both upper and lower bound models.

During decades, there has been much progress in understanding of the inelastic behavior of the materials and numerous inelastic constitutive equations have been developed. The complexity of these constitutive equations generally requires a stable and accurate numerical method. To obtain the increment of state variable, its evolution laws are linearized by several approximation methods, such as general midpoint rule(GMR) or general trapezoidal rule(GTR). In this investigation, semi-implicit integration schemes using GTR and GMR were developed and implemented into ABAQUS by means of UMAT subroutine. The comparison of integration schemes was conducted on the simple tension case, and simple shear case and nonproportional loading case. The fully implicit integration(FI) was the most stable but amplified the truncation error when the nonlinearity of state variable is strong. The semi-implicit integration using GTR gave the most accurate results at tension and shear problem. The numerical solutions with refined time increment were always placed between results of GTR and those of FI. GTR integration with adjusting midpoint parameter can be recommended as the best integration method for viscoplastic equation considering nonlinear kinematic hardening.

Under repeated rolling, initial plastic deformation introduces residual stresses which render the steady cyclic state purely elastic. This is called the process of shakedown. Many studies have been done about the shakedown in semi-infinite half space using calculated Hertizian pressure. In this paper shakedown processes in a shaft are studied by finite element analyses of a two dimensional(plane strain) model with elastic-linear-kinematic-hardening-plastic material subjected to repeated, frictionless rolling contact. Symmetric and non-symmetric pressure distributions are obtained using a simplified model of the bearing-shaft assembly. The rolling contact is simulated by repeatedly translating both pressure distributions along the surface of the shaft. By the influence of the non-symmetric pressure, larger residual radial tensile stress is generated in the immediate subsurface layer, which may make a crack propagate and, the subsurface undergoes a zigzag plastic deformation during the shakedown process, which may lead to a crack initiation.
This paper presents the convected material frame approach to study the nonlinear behavior of inelastic frame structures. The convected material frame approach is a modification of the co-rotational approximation by incorporating an adaptive convected material frame in the basic definition of the displacement vector and strain tensor. In the formulation, each discrete element is associated with a local coordinate system that rotates and translates with the element. For each load increment, the corresponding strain-displacement and nodal force-stress relationships are defined in the updated local coordinates, and based on the updated element geometry. The rigid body motion and deformation displacements are decoupled for each increment. This modified approach incorporates the geometrical nonlinearities through the continuous updating of the material frame geometry. A generalized nonlinear function is used to derive the inelastic constitutive relation and the kinematic hardening is considered. The equation of motion is integrated by an explicit procedure and it involves only vector assemblage and vector storage in the analysis by assuming a lumped mass matrix of diagonal form. Several numerical examples are demonstrated in close agreement with the solutions obtained by the ANSYS code. Numerical studies show that the proposed approach is capable of investigating large deflection of inelastic planar structures and providing an excellent numerical performance.

A coupled algorithm is proposed which first considers the creation of porous structure of the material and then the simulations of response of mechanical components with porous structure to a variable load history. The simulations are carried out by the Prandtl operator approach in the finite element method (FEM) which enables structural simulations of mechanical components subjected to variable thermomechanical loads. Temperature-dependent material properties and multilinear kinematic hardening of the material can be taken into account by this approach. Several simulations are then performed for a tensile-compressive specimen made of a generic porous structure and mechanical properties of Aluminium alloy AlSi9Cu3. Variable mechanical load history has been applied to the specimens under constant temperature conditions. Comparison of the simulation results shows a considerable elastoplastic stress-strain response in the vicinity of pores whilst the surface of the gauge-length of the specimen remains in the elastic region of the material. Moreover, the distribution of the pore sizes seems more influential to the stress-strain field during the loading than their radial position in the gauge-length.
Modified two-surface model (M2SM) is one of the steel elasto-plastic hysteretic constitutive models that consider both analysis accuracy and efficiency. However, when M2SM is used for complex strain history, sometimes the results are irrational due to the limitation of stress-strain path judgment. In this paper, the defect of M2SM was re-modified by improving the judgment of stress-strain paths. The accuracy and applicability of the improved method were verified on both material and structural level. Based on this improvement, the nonlinear time-history analysis was carried out for a deck-through steel arch bridge with a 200 m-long span under the ground motions of Chi-Chi earthquake and Niigata earthquake. In the analysis, we compared the results obtained by hysteretic constitutive models of improved two-surface model (I2SM) presented in this paper, M2SM and the bilinear kinematic hardening model (BKHM). Results show that, although the analysis precision of displacement response of different steel hysteretic models differs little from each other, the stress-strain responses of the structure are affected by steel hysteretic models apparently. The difference between the stress-strain responses obtained by I2SM and M2SM cannot be neglected. In significantly damaged areas, BKHM gives smaller stress result and obviously different strain response compared with I2SM and M2SM, and tends to overestimate the effect of hysteretic energy dissipation. Moreover, at some position with severe damage, BKHM may underestimate the size of seismic damaged areas. Different steel hysteretic models also have influences on structural damage evaluation results based on deformation behavior and low cycle fatigue, and may lead to completely different judgment of failure, especially in severely damaged areas.
This paper describes analytical investigation into a new dual function system including a couple of shear links which are connected in series using chevron bracing capable to correlate its performance with magnitude of earthquakes. In this proposed system, called Chevron Knee-Vertical Link Beam braced system (CK-VLB), the inherent hysteretic damping of vertical link beam placed above chevron bracing is exclusively utilized to dissipate the energy of moderate earthquakes through web plastic shear distortion while the rest of the structural elements are in elastic range. Under strong earthquakes, plastic deformation of VLB will be halted via restraining it by Stopper Device (SD) and further imposed displacement subsequently causes yielding of the knee elements located at the bottom of chevron bracing to significantly increase the energy dissipation capacity level. In this paper first by studying the knee yielding mode, a suitable shape and angle for diagonal-knee bracing is proposed. Then finite elements models are developed. Monotonic and cyclic analyses have been conducted to compare dissipation capacities on three individual models of passive systems (CK-VLB, knee braced system and SPS system) by General-purpose finite element program ABAQUS in which a bilinear kinematic hardening model is incorporated to trace the material nonlinearity. Also quasi-static cyclic loading based on the guidelines presented in ATC-24 has been imposed to different models of CK-VLB with changing of vertical link beam section in order to find prime effectiveness on structural frames. Results show that CK-VLB system exhibits stable behavior and is capable of dissipating a significant amount of energy in two separate levels of lateral forces due to different probable earthquakes.

Turbine blades and disc, which are one of the most important rotating parts of a gas turbine engine, are required to have highly efficient performance in order to minimize the total life cycle costs. Owing to these requirements, these components are exposed to severe conditions such as extreme turbine inlet temperatures, high compression ratios, and high speeds. To evaluate the structural integrity of a turbine disc under these conditions, material modeling and finite element analysis techniques are essential; furthermore, shape optimization is necessary for determining the optimal solution. This study aims to generate 2D finite element models of an axisymmetry model and a sector one and to perform thermal-structural coupled-field analysis and contact analysis. Structurally vulnerable areas such as the disc bore and disc-blade interface region are analyzed by a parametric study. Finally, an improved design is provided based on the results, and the necessity of elaborate shape optimization is confirmed.
