  • In viewpoints of environmental and resource conservation, it is desirable to utilize fly ash generated from domestic coal power stations as light constructive material. Furthermore, the demand of light constructive materials has been increased as many building tend to become highly multistory buildings. In demonstration of converting fly ash to light constructive materials, the Dwight-Lloyd kiln of which the operation is relatively easy and the reliability very high has been informed to be only commercialized plant over the world. In this review, Dwight-Lloyd kiln plant operated at Oomura coal power station in Japan is explained. Circular grate kiln, Shaft kiln, Rotary kiln plants that are under developed is also introduced.

Optimization of Kiln Process Parameters of Low-Temperature Sintering Lightweight Aggregate by Response Surface Analysis (반응표면분석법에 따른 저온소성 경량골재의 킬른공정변수 최적화)

  • This paper was to evaluate the influence of kiln process parameter(kiln angle, kiln rotating speed) of lightweight aggregate using waste glass and bottom ash with industrial by-products on thermal conductivity, density, water absorption, fracture load and porosity by response surface analysis. In the results of surface plot and contour plot, it has verified that kiln residence time of lightweight aggregate increase as kiln angle and rotating speed decreases. For this reason, pore size and quantity tend to increase by active reaction of forming agent. It seems to be that increase in pore size and quantity have caused decreasing density, fracture load and thermal conductivity, and increasing water absorption. In conclusion, optimization of kiln process parameter on thermal conductivity, density, water absorption, fracture load and porosity by response surface analysis are kiln angle 2.4646%, kiln rotating speed 40.7089 rpm.

Characteristics of Wood Tar Produced as Byproduct from Two Types of The Kiln in The Manufacture of Oak Charcoal

  • This study investigated the characteristics of wood tar, produced as a byproduct during the production of charcoal using oak wood by the modified traditional kiln and mechanical steel kiln. The wood tar was analyzed with a number of techniques, including Py-GC/MS, NMR, MALDI-TOF, FT-IR, TG and DSC. The Py-GC/MS analysis indicated that modified traditional kiln generated a higher hydrocarbon ratio in the wood tar than that of mechanical steel kiln. On the other hand, mechanical steel kiln resulted in a higher proportion of phenolic and aromatic hydrocarbon components than that of modified traditional kiln. Those results were also confirmed by NMR analysis. The MALDI-TOF analysis suggested that the wood tar produced in the mechanical steel kiln had a slightly higher molecular weight than the wood tar produced in the modified traditional kiln. In addition, the FT-IR analysis showed characteristic peak of symmetrical stretching vibration of $CH_3$ from the modified traditional kiln while characteristic peaks of the C-C and C-O stretching vibration were observed from the mechanical steel kiln. Moreover, TG and DSC analysis suggested that the mechanical steel kiln is more thermally stable than that of modified traditional kiln. Those findings clearly showed that the method of making charcoal greatly affects the properties of wood tar.

  • Rotary kiln furnace is one of the most widely used reactors in industrial field. In this paper, 0-dimensional heat and mass balance for direct coal flame rotary kiln was performed preferentially, then a simplified 1-dimensional model was developed based on 0-dimensional analysis data to proceed additional thermal analysis. Compared the results with the currently operating rotary kiln data to validate 1-dimensional model. Through this procedure, it can help to derive fundamental idea for design and operation of rotary kiln.

  • The rotary kiln is one of the most widely used industrial reactors for contacting gases and solids. Kilns are mainly used for drying, calcining and reducing solid materials. In an indirected fired rotary kiln, heat is supplied to the outside of the kiln wall. Heat transfer in indirected fired rotary kilns encompasses all the modes of transport mechanisms, that is, conduction, convection and radiation. This paper deal with the heat transfer characteristics of indirect fired rotary kiln for scale up.

  • This work is concerned with the experimental and theoretical investigation of a kiln with the aim to obtain th best conditions of firing in a kiln, The 0.3$m^3$ down draft kiln of gas firing was designed and constructed. Temperature distributions in kiln combustion gas temperature primary and secondary air flow were measured in the kiln burnt with propane LP gas. And the temperature distri-butions of kiln surface were measured by the thermo camera.

  • Rotary kiln furnace is one of the most widely used gas-solid reactors in the industrial field. Although the rotary kiln is a versatile system and has different size, approach to the reactor modeling can be generalized in terms of flow motion of the solid and gas phase, heat transfer and chemical reactions on purpose. In this paper, a performance analysis example case of axial direction direct flame rotary kiln is introduced.

  • The exports of plywood are increasing annually and it has ranked first in the world market because of the high quality product and manufactured using mordern techniques. However, it is known that the exports of the other wood products, except plywood, is inactive because of their low quality. Accordingly, to increase the exports of various wood products investigations were carried out on kiln drying techniques to improve the quality of the wood. Wet wood should be kiln dried before use to prevent various drying defects such as distortion, shrinkage etc., which would develop after processing,:and also wet wood is not suitable for cutting, gluing and finishing. Therefore, the kiln drying properties of lumber from such species as oak, ramin and meranti which are used in large quantity for manufacturing exporting wood products have been studied. The results of the research are summarized as follows. (1) The end checks and the time for drying from initial moisture content of about 40 percent to 5 percent moisture content in ovendry were investigated as follows: (2) The kiln dried results, for 30mm stock, which are presented by using kiln schedule table 3 are as follows: (3) The kiln schedules for ramin, meranti and oak are given respectively as follows: Ramin kiln schedule: Table 17 and Table 18. A Study on the Efficiency of Smoke-pipe, Internal-fan Type Dry Kiln Heated with Smokeless Coal (무연탄을 열원으로 한 연도측위 내부 송풍식 목재 건조실의 제작에 관하여)

  • 1. In the past, the smoke-pipe type dry kiln being characterized by the low cost of installation and easy operation was only used by the small scale of wood processing enterprisers for drying softwood and finishing air-dried stocks that were belonged to easy drying properties. The smoke-pipe type dry kiln usually was not suitable for drying hardwoods and green woods because of the difficulties of controlling drying conditions. 2. However, the smoke-pipe type dry kiln heated with smokeless coal which was designed and constructed by the authers was demonstrated to maintain higher accuracy of controlling temperature and humidity than the other smillar types of kiln. Also, since it was constructed with home made equipments, it is supposed to offer the opportunity to install the kiln by the small scale of wood processing enterprisers who could not install the dry kiln because of economical and technical difficulties. Thus, it is expected that promoting the spread of installing the dry kiln will realize the rational use of wood.
