  • Large-conductance $Ca^{2+}$-activated potassium channels ($BK_{Ca}$ are a widely distributed and play key roles in various cell functions. In nerve cells, $BK_{Ca}$ channels shorten the duration of action potentials and block $Ca^{2+}$ entry thereby repolarizing excitable cells after excitation. $BK_{Ca}$ channel opening has been postulated to confer neuroprotection during stroke, and has attracted attention as a means for therapeutic intervention in asthma, hypertension, convulsions, and traumatic brain injury. Several natural and synthetic compounds including a steroid hormone, $\beta$-estradiol, have been identified as the activators of $BK_{Ca}$ channels. Based on the structural features of the previously reported activators of $BK_{Ca}$ channels, we designed several lead compounds, synthesized chemically, and tested their functional activity on cloned $BK_{Ca}$ channels. The $\alpha$ subunit of rat $BK_{Ca}$ channel was expressed alone or with different $\beta$ subunits in Xenopus oocytes and the effects of the compounds were tested electrophysiological means. One of the lead compounds affected the activity of the $\alpha$ subunit of $BK_{Ca}$ channel in a $\beta$ subunit-specific manner. While the activity of B $K_{ca}$ channel $\alpha$ subunit was Potentiated, the channel composed of $\alpha$ and $\beta$1 subunits were inhibited by this compound. We are currently investigating the mechanism of the $\beta$ subunit-dependent effects and planning to localize the receptor site of the lead compound.f the lead compound.

  • This paper presents an analog front-end integrated circuit (IC) for medical ultrasound imaging systems using standard $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process. The proposed front-end circuit includes the transmit part which consists of 15-V high-voltage pulser operating at 2.6 MHz, and the receive part which consists of switch and a low-power low-noise preamplifier. Depending on the operation mode, the output driver in the transmit pulser can be reconfigured as the switch in the receive path and thus the area of the overall front-end IC is reduced by over 70% in comparison to previous work. The designed single-channel front-end prototype consumes less than $0.045mm^2$ of core area and can be utilized as a key building block in highly-integrated multi-array ultrasound medical imaging systems.

  • This development is for non-destructive machine using X-Ray source about detecting outline faults of below middle size products. The differentiation is product of research and development unspecialized small and medium-sized products using X-Ray light sources can check real time if the surface of an external fault of radiation dose reference, within the leakage. The speed control is possible by software solution. In addition, we're working on possibly block doors for worker safety and equipment at the same time that inner drive can be identified in the image. These principles, as a key enabler of the current inspection system such as the container is small to medium-sized parts - a long way from utilization level is possible. This research will give rise to major effects for other various non-destructive market industries except car-industry. The most important fact is that this developed non-destructive machine is controlled below $0.2micro-S{\mu}v$.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the magnitude and distribution of stress using photoelastic model with the rigid connection using T-block attachment and non-rigid connection using key & keyway attachment. The vertical load of 16 Kg was applied on the central fossa of the tooth, the pontic and the implant, and the pattern and distribution under each condition was analyzed. The following results were obtained : 1. In case of vertical load on the central fossa of the implant, the stress was concentrated at the apex of the implant involving the mesial alveolar bone in both fixed partial denture with the rigid connection and that with the nonrigid connection and the stress concentration at the mesial cervical area of the implant was a little more in the nonrigid connection than in the rigid connection. 2. In case of vertical load on the central fossa of the pontic, the stress was concentrated at the apex of 2nd bicuspid in both 3 unit fixed partial denture with nonrigid connection and that with the rigid connection. The stress was more concentrated at the mesial alveolar bone of the implant, but the stress distribution at the natural teeth more favorable at the rigid connection than at the non-rigid connection in case of 4 unit fixed partial denture. 3. In case of vertical load of the central fossa of the 2nd bicuspid, much stress with 3 fringe order was observed at the apex of the 2nd bicuspid in the 3 unit fixed partial denture, but relatively even stress distribution was observed at the apex of the implant, the 1st and 2nd bicuspid, and the adjacent cuspid in the 4 unit fixed partial denture.

  • In modern society, the number of applications, which needs storage, is increased. Among them, the advance of FinTech increased the importance of storage encryption. FinTech storage, storing sensitive information, should be kept secure. Unless the storage is kept, many users will be damaged monetarily. To prevent this problem, we should encrypt the storage. A EncFS, which is one of the most popular storage encryption application, uses different IVs for each block to provide higher levels of security in the encryption algorithm. However, there is a vulnerability related to the usage of same IVs. In this paper, we propose a technique that decrypts the ciphertexts without knowing the secret key by using the vulnerability. Moreover, we show that the EncFS is not secure under IND-CPA model and propose a new scheme which is secure under IND-CPA model.

  • This paper describes an area-efficient design of SHA-256 hash function that is widely used in various security protocols including digital signature, authentication code, key generation. The SHA-256 hash processor includes a padder block for padding and parsing input message, so that it can operate without software for preprocessing. Round function was designed with a 16-bit data-path that processed 64 round computations in 128 clock cycles, resulting in an optimized area per throughput (APT) performance as well as small area implementation. The SHA-256 hash processor was verified by FPGA implementation using Virtex5 device, and it was estimated that the throughput was 337 Mbps at maximum clock frequency of 116 MHz. The synthesis for ASIC implementation using a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS cell library shows that it has 13,251 gate equivalents (GEs) and it can operate up to 200 MHz clock frequency.

  • Lightweight Encryption Algorithm (LEA) is one of the most promising lightweight block cipher algorithm due to its high efficiency and security level. There are many works on the efficient LEA implementation. However, many works missed the secure application services where the IoT platforms perform secure communications between heterogeneous IoT platforms. In order to establish the secure communication channel between them, the encryption should be performed in the on-the-fly method. In this paper, we present the LEA implementation performing the on-the-fly method over the ARM Cortex-M3 processors. The general purpose registers are fully utilized to retain the required variables for the key scheduling and encryption operations and the rotation operation is optimized away by using the barrel-shifter technique. Since the on-the-fly method does not store the round keys, the RAM requirements are minimized. The implementation is evaluated over the ARM Cortex-M3 processor and it only requires 34 cycles/byte.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sulfinpyrazone on fumonisin $B_1$-induced elevation of free sphingoid bases in LLC-$PK_1$ cells. Fumonis ins are a family of mycotoxins produced by the fungi Fusarium moniliforme which is common contaminant in corn. Fumonisins are also potent inhibiors of sphingosine and sphinganine N-acyltransferases (ceramide synthases), key enzymes in sphingolipid metabolism resulting in the elevation of free sphinganine. The cytosolic concentration of fumonisin B1 was known to be closely proportional to the elevation of free sphinganine in LLC-PK1 cells [Yoo, H.-S., Norred, W.P., Wang, E., Merrill, A.H., Jr., and Riley, R.T. (1992) Toxicol. Appl.Pharmacol. 114. 9-15]. Sulfinpyrazone, an anion transport inhibitor, reduced the elevated level of free sphinganine resulting from fumonisin B1 inhibition of de novo sphingolipid biosynthesis. Fumonisin B1 at a concentration of 20${\mu}$M showed approximately 120pmol/$10^6$ cells relative to 3-10pmol/$10^6$ cells in control cultures, and sulfinpyrazone at a concentration of 200${\mu}$M partially reversed the increased level of free sphinganine induced by fumonisin $B_1$ down to normal level after exposure to fumonisin $B_1$ for 8 to 24hr. However, the reduced effect of sulfinpyrazone on the fumonisin $B_1$-induced elevation of intracellular sphinganine was not shown after 24hr. Fumonisin $B_1$ exposure to LLC-PK1 cells for 36 and 48hr showed approximately 74 and 80pmol per $10^6$ cells relative to 82 and 76pmol,respectively, in fumonisin $B_1$ plus sulfinpyrazone-treated cultures. Sulfinpyrazone-induced less elevation of free sphinganine in confluent cells after exposure to fumonisin $B_1$ suggested that either sulfinpyrazone may block the availability of fumonisin $B_1$ to cells or act on the fumonisin $B_1$ interaction with ceramide synthase.

  • Tropical forests play a key role for functioning of the planet and maintenance of life. These forests support more than half of the world's species, serve as regulators of global and regional climate, act as carbon sinks and provide valuable ecosystem services. Forest floor biomass and litterfall dynamics was measured in different sites influenced by fire in a seasonally dry tropical forest of Bhoramdeo wildlife sanctuary of Chhattisgarh, India. The forest floor biomass was collected randomly placed quadrats while the litterfall measured by placing stone-block lined denuded quadrat technique. The seasonal mean total forest floor biomass across the fire regimes varied from $2.00-3.65t\;ha^{-1}$. The total litterfall of the study sites varied from $4.75-7.56t\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$. Annual turnover of litter varied from 70-74% and the turnover time between 1.35-1.43 years. Monthly pattern of forest floor biomass indicated that partially decayed litter, wood litter and total forest floor were differed significantly. The seasonal variation showed that leaf fall differed significantly in winter season only among the fire regimes while the wood litter was found non significant in all the season. This study shows that significant variation among the site due to the forest fire. Decomposition is one of the ecological processes critical to the functioning of forest ecosystems. The decomposing wood serves as a saving account of nutrients and organic materials in the forest floor. Across the site, high fire zone was facing much of the deleterious effects on forest floor biomass and litter production. Control on such type of wildfire and anthropogenic ignition could allow the natural recovery processes to enhance biological diversity. Chronic disturbances do not provide time for ecosystem recovery; it needs to be reduced for ecosystem health and maintaining of the high floral and faunal biodiversity.

  • Efficient finite field operation in the elliptic curve (EC) public key cryptography algorithm, which attracts much of latest issues in the applications in information security, is very important. Traditional serial finite multipliers root from Mastrovito's serial multiplication architecture. In this paper, we adopt the polynomial basis and propose a new finite field multiplier, inducing numerical expressions which can be applied to exhibit 3 times as much performance as the Mastrovito's. We described the proposed multiplier with HDL to verify and evaluate as a proper hardware IP. HDL-implemented serial GF (Galois field) multiplier showed 3 times as fast speed as the traditional serial multiplier's adding only partial-sum block in the hardware. So far, there have been grossly 3 types of studies on GF($2^m$) multiplier architecture, such as serial multiplication, array multiplication, and hybrid multiplication. In this paper, we propose a novel approach on developing serial multiplier architecture based on Mastrovito's, by modifying the numerical formula of the polynomial-basis serial multiplication. The proposed multiplier architecture was described and implemented in HDL so that the novel architecture was simulated and verified in the level of hardware as well as software.
