  • The aim of this study is to delineate 'admixed hybrid' and 'introgressive' Fasciola genotypes present in the Fasciola population in Vietnam. Adult liver flukes collected from ruminants in 18 Provinces were morphologically sorted out by naked eyes for small (S), medium (M) and large (L) body shapes; and human samples (n=14) from patients. Nuclear ribosomal (rDNA) ITS1 and ITS2, and mitochondrial (mtDNA) nad1 markers were used for determination of their genetic status. Total 4,725 worm samples of ruminants were tentatively classified by their size: 6% (n=284) small (S)-, 13% (n=614) medium (M)-, and 81% (n=3,827) large (L)-forms. All the representative (n=120, as 40 each group) and 14 human specimens, possessed maternal mtDNA of only F. gigantica and none of F. hepatica. Paternally, all (100%) of the L-(n=40) and 77.5% (n=31) of the M-flukes had single F. gigantica rDNA indicating 'pure' F. gigantica. A majority (90%, n=36) of the S- and 15% (n=6) of the M-worms had single F. hepatica rDNA, indicating their introgressive; the rest (10%, n=4) of the S- and 7.5% (n=3) of the M-flukes had mixture of both F. gigantica and F. hepatica rDNAs, confirming their admixed hybrid genetic status. Fourteen human samples revealed 9 (64%) of pure F. gigantica, 3 (22%) of introgressive and 2 (14%) of admixed hybrid Fasciola spp. By the present study, it was confirmed that the small worms, which are morphologically identical with F. hepatica, are admixed and/or introgressive hybrids of Fasciola spp., and able to be the pathogens of human fascioliasis.

  • In spoken document retrievals (SDR), subword (typically phonemes) indexing term is used to avoid the out-of-vocabulary (OOV) problem. It makes the indexing and retrieval process independent from any vocabulary. It also requires a small corpus to train the acoustic model. However, subword indexing term approach has a major drawback. It shows higher word error rates than the large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR) system. In this paper, we propose an probabilistic slot detection and n-gram based string matching method for phone based spoken document retrievals to overcome high error rates of phone recognizer. Experimental results have shown 9.25% relative improvement in the mean average precision (mAP) with 1.7 times speed up in comparison with the baseline system.

  • In order to develop the challenging process of placing Aids to Navigation (AtoN), we propose performance measures which quantifies the effect of such placement. The best placement of AtoNs is that from which the navigator can best recognize the information provided by an AtoN. The visibility of AtoNs depends mostly on light sources, the weather condition and the position of the navigator. Visual recognition is enabled by achieving adequate contrast between the AtoN light source and background light. Therefore, the performance measures can be formulated through the amount of differences between these two lights. For simplification, this approach is based on the values of the human factor suggested by International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA). Performance measures for AtoN placement can be evaluated through AtoN Simulator, which has been being developed by KIOST/KRISO in Korea and has been launched by Korea National Research Program. Simulations for evaluation are carried out at waterway in Busan port in Korea.

  • The plasma vapor coatings on two kinds of die steels have been carried out in order to identify the most optimized conditions. When TiN or TiAlN coatings were carried out on the substrates, the coating layer thicknesses were not significantly changed, and the optimized coating thickness was identified as ~ 5 μm. When the optimized coating conditions and stress analysis were applied to the primary piston dies for fabrication of aluminum cylinders, an extended life time of the die was observed. The methodology for extending the life time of dies was discussed in terms of microstructures and stress analysis.

  • We investigated defects and surface polarity in AlN and GaN by using wet chemical etching. Therefore, the effectiveness and reliability of estimating the single crystals by defect selective etching in NaOH/KOH eutectic alloy have been successfully demonstrated. High-quality AlN and GaN single crystals were etched in molten NaOH/KOH eutectic alloy. The etching characteristics and surface morphologies were carried out by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). The etch rates of AlN and GaN surface were calculated by etching depth as a function of etching time. As a result, two-types of etch pits with different sizes were revealed on AlN and GaN surface, respectively. Etching produced hexagonal pits on the metal-face (Al, Ga) (0001) plane, while hexagonal hillocks formed on the N-face. On etching rate calibration, it was found that N-face had approximately 109 and 15 times higher etch rate than the metal-face of AlN and GaN, respectively. The size of etch pits increased with an increase of the etching time and they tend to merge together with a neighbouring etch pits. Also, the chemical mechanism of each etching process was discussed. It was found that hydroxide ion ($OH^-$) and the dangling bond of nitrogen play an important role in the selective etching of the metal-face and N-face.

  • Isotopic-spectral method [I] was applicated for determination of carbon in silicate materials (pure silica, guartz glasses, geological probs etc.). Isotopic heterogeneous balancing of carbon in gaseous phase and solid samples was carried out at the temperature of $1500-1900^{\circ}K$. Spectroscopic measuring of isotope concentration in a balanced gas was made using the electron-vibrational band heads of CO molecules excited in HF discharge. Limits of detection of carbon concentrations appear to be $n^*10^{-6}$.

  • Pearson $X^2$ statistics can be used as the measure of association for two-way contingency tables. However, it's magnitude depends on the sample size N, the normalized index ${\phi}^2 = X^2\;/\;N$ has. been widely used in many researches instead of that. In this study, we firstly point out that the actual upper bound of ${\phi}^2$ can be affected by the given marginals of the tables, so that ${\phi}^2$ should be adjusted the actual maximum to get the proper range [ 0, 1]. Also we point out that the maximum could be found easily by using several algorithms like Hu and Mukerjee(2002). With the actual maximum, we propose the relative measure of association which is normalized by it.

  • The dental orthodontic wire provides a good combination of strength, corrosion resistance and moderate cost. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of TiN and ZrN coating on corrosion resistance and physical property of orthodontic wire using various instruments. Wires(round type and rectangular type) were used, respectively, for experiment. Ion plating was carried out for wire using Ti and Zr coating materials with nitrogen gas. Ion plated surface of each specimen was observed with field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS), atomic force microscopy(AFM), vickers hardness tester, and electrochemical tester. The surface of TiN and ZrN coated wire was more smooth than that of other kinds of non-coated wire. TiN and ZrN coated surface showed higher hardness than that of non-coated surface. The corrosion potential of the TiN coated wire was comparatively high. The current density of TiN coated wire was smaller than that of non-coated wire in 0.9% NaCl solution. Pit nucleated at scratch of wire. The pitting corrosion resistance $|E_{pit}-E_{rep}|$ increased in the order of ZrN coated(300 mV), TiN coated(120 mV) and non-coated wire(0 mV).
