An Analysis of the Relationship between Family Incongruence about Family Environment and Occurrence of Juvenile Delinquency (비행 청소년 발생과 가족환경과의 상관관계 연구 -일반가정과 비행청소년 가정을 중심으로-)

  • This study was concerned with the investigation of the relationship between the degree of family incongruence about family environment and the occurrence of juvenile delinquency using Family Environmental Scale (F.E.S) designed by Rudolf Moos. The study employed the control group design using the interview and questionnaire through home visiting. The control group sample consisted of 44 families from a middle socioeconomic S Dong community setting and the experimental group sample consisted of 30 families of juve nile from Juvenile Training School in Seoul, Total sample size was 321. Data for this study was collected over a period of three months from the end of Nov. 1982 to the beginning of Feb. 1983, after pretest. To analize the data, t-test was used. The result of this study was as follows; 1. The experimental groups' incongruence score was 18.8598 as compared to the control groups' score of 14.8598. The differences were statistically significant at .001 level, and the hygothesis was supported. 2. The experimental group had higher incongruence scores as compared to the control group of three dimensions, the differences were statistically significant at .05 level. The experimental group had higher incongruence scores than the control group on 6 subscales, namely, cohesion, expressiveness, conflict, achievement orientation, moral-religious emphasis and organization. The differences were statistically significant at. 05 level.

Typologies and Characteristics of Adolescent-Peer Delinquency using Latent Class Analysis (잠재계층분석(LCA)을 이용한 청소년-또래 비행의 유형과 특성)

  • Objective: Delinquent peers are important predictors of adolescent delinquent behavior. Few studies have classified individuals into groups based on patterns of delinquent behavior among youth and their peers. This study identified latent groups based on adolescent-peer delinquency and examined psychosocial characteristics of each latent group. Methods: First, the study employed latent class analysis based on a nationally representative data of South Korean middle school students (N = 2,277). Both adolescent and peer delinquent behaviors comprised 13 items in the questionnaire that was self-reported by adolescents. Second, the study used multivariate regression models to analyze psychosocial symptoms of latent groups and conducted Wald tests to compare differences among latent groups. Results: Patterns of adolescent-peer delinquency were classified into six latent groups. "Mutual total delinquent group (1.2%)" showed high rates in most delinquent experiences. "Mutual status delinquent group (5.7%)" mainly experienced status delinquency, "Mutual violence delinquent group (5.3%)" showed high rates of violent delinquency. "Peer-only total high delinquent group (3.8%)" reported friends to have engaged in all types of delinquency and "Peer-only total medium delinquent group (11.8%)" reported peer involvement in multiple status and few violent delinquency. Finally, "low risk group (72.2%)" reported low rates of delinquency for themselves and their friends. Regression analysis showed that every "mutual" delinquent group presented significantly worse psychosocial problems than the "low risk group." Conclusion: Using person centered latent class analysis, this study classified six latent classes while considering both delinquent agents and various types of delinquency and investigated specific groups with greater risk of psychosocial problems.

Discrete-Time Survival Analysis of the Determinants of the Onset of Adolescents' Status Delinquency (비연속시간 생존분석을 활용한 청소년의 최초 지위비행에 대한 영향요인 분석)

  • This study examined the onset of adolescent delinquency through discrete-time survival analysis. Our analysis used data obtained from the Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey, and included 2,277 middle school students. The main analysis results are as follows. First, the hazard probability for the occurrence of delinquency was the highest at 16.6% in the second year of middle school, slightly decreased in the third year of middle school, but continued to increase as the overall grade increased. Second, adolescent psychological and emotional factors have significantly affected the onset of delinquency. Third, negative parenting methods had a significant impact on delinquency, but neglect was not significant. Fourth, having delinquent friends was an important factor affecting the status of delinquency. Fifth, among the school factors, adjustment of learning activities, adjustment of school rules, and adjustment of friendship relations influenced the status of delinquency, while the adjustment of teacher relations was not significant. As early intervention is important to prevent juvenile delinquency, education and support for establishing healthy relationships are needed.

  • There appears a variety forms of crime type and age in accordance with the change of social structure. In this paper it is described for combining the Anomie theory of Emile Durkheim. Anomie refers to the absence of dual standards or norms. In other words, while weakening the existing norms prevailing when the new rules has not been established. That situation would cause social chaos. Rules on the dissemination and utilization of SNS due to the development of information and communication technology undermine the social norms while online regulations are being a weak state not established. In the confusion of these norms it has been shown to increase in juvenile delinquency. Social media has characteristics such as openness, accessibility, relationships, and content diversity. The social media itself is not subject to the general mechanisms of consumption and production due to growing as a kind of organism. It has characteristic to make the most content by utilizing the users to voluntarily share information. Social media using as communication, contact and information in the youth, thus the possibility of crime is high. Social media is also direct and indirect influence on youth crime but no apparent systemic regulation of this situation.

The Effects of Social Bonding on Self-Competence of Juvenile Inmates: Focused on Mediating Effect of Self-Esteem (소년원보호소년의 사회적 유대가 자기유능감에 미치는 영향: 자아존중감의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of social bonding on self-competence in the juvenile delinquency on the mediating effect of self-esteem. The data of 908 juvenile inmates in a Study on Measures to Develop Entrepreneurship Education Model and to Encourage Start-up for Youth(2015) by the National Youth Policy Institute were analysed. The results of the study are: (1) social bonding was found a key factor affecting the self-competence, (2) their social bonding affects self-esteem, (3) self-esteem affects self-competence, (4) self-esteem was proved to have a mediating effect between the effects of social bonding and self-competence. The implications and limitations are reviewed, as are the suggestions for future research.

  • Recently, 'Juvenile' is associated with the 'Misconduct', for it becomes an object of public concern. Therefore in this study, we suggest counterplan about the group traits connected juvenile-life intimately. First, parents promote conversation among the family and are concerned about their children. And they find out the problems in the bud to educate beforehand Second, the counterplan by school attaches great importance to individual contact. Third, in the counterplan on social aspects, adults' unwholesome ideas, bad effects of the mass communication, the lack of teenager's association, negative activity, leisure facilities and lack of opportunity for juveniles bring about negative facts for education of teenagers. Therefore we need positive counterplan to enlighten the young and purify the social environment. And the nation establish righteous values for the younger generation to not commit a crime and punish severely as well as must prepare the realistic and clear policy for the young to bear the responsibility for their role.

  • Immoral and unethical cases are reported in newspapers and on TV every day, and the number of serious juvenile problems such as suicide, truanting and extreme egoism has been increasing. Therefore, through our counseling system, we can select some students who are at risk of causing juvenile problems such as delinquency and absenteeism. Moreover we can prevent the students from causing these problems and help the students adapt better to school circumstances.

  • This study examines the overall structure among family relationship, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and delinquency of adolescent in single-parent families using structural equation modeling to provide theoretical basis preventable juvenile delinquency. The data of 516 middle and high school students in the research into the promotion policies on children and adolescents' mental health(2012) by the National Youth Policy Institute analysed. The result of this study are: (1) family relationship affects self-efficacy, self-esteem, and delinquency of adolescent, (2) family relationship affects delinquency of adolescent by the mediation of self-esteem, (3) self-efficacy doesn't affect delinquency of adolescent. This study suggests the necessity of both intervention as well as the development implementation of practical methods for the prevention of delinquency of adolescent.

The Effect of a Value Clarification Program on Value Clarification in Juvenile Delinquents (가치관 명료화 프로그램이 비행청소년의 가치 명료도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a value clarification program on value clarification in juvenile delinquents. This study employed a two-group pre-post test study design. Data was collected from 16 subjects from Sept. 29 to Dec. 26, 2003 at N middle school in Seoul, Korea. 9 subjects constituted the control, while the experimental group was composed of 7 subjects. Method: The structured group therapy used in this study was developed on the basis of Raths et al. (1978) theory. The subjects participated in 10 sessions of therapy that lasted 60 minutes. The instruments used were value clarification Test (Lee, 1988), and SPSS Window. Result: The experimental group showed a significant increase in value clarification after their participation in the program. Conclusion: Based upon the findings it was concluded that a value clarification program was effective in improving value clarification in juvenile delinquents in the study.
