PURPOSES : The purpose of this article is to investigate the predicted life of jointed concrete pavement (JCP) with two variables effecting on axle load spectra (ALS). The first variable is different data acquisition methods whether using high-speed weigh-in-motion (HS-WIM) or not and the other one is spectra distribution due to overweight enforcement on main-lane of expressway using HS-WIM. METHODS : Three sets of ALS had been collected i) ALS provided by Korea Pavement Research Program (KPRP), which had been obtained without using HS-WIM ii) ALS collected by HS-WIM before the enforcement at Kimcheon and Seonsan site iii) ALS collected after the enforcement at the same sites. And all ALS had been classified into twelve vehicle classes and four axle types to compare each other. Among the vehicle classes, class 6, 7, 10 and 12 were selected as the major target for comparing each ALS because these were considered as the primary trucks with a high rate of overweight loading. In order to analyze the performance of JCP based on pavement life, fatigue crack and International Roughness Index (IRI) were predicted using road pavement design program developed by KPRP and each ALS with same annual average daily traffic (AADT) was applied to design slab thickness. RESULTS : Comparison ALS of KPRP with those of HS-WIM shows that the ALS of KPRP has a low percentage of heavy spectra such as 6~9 tonnes for single axle, 18~21 tonnes for tandem axle and 27~30 tonnes for tridem axle than other two ALS of HS-WIM in most vehicle classes and axle types. It means that ALS of KPRP was underestimated. And after the enforcement, percentage of heavy spectra close to 10 tonnes per an axle are lowered than before the enforcement by the effect of overweight enforcement because the spectra are related to overweight regulation. Prediction results of pavement life for each ALS present that the ALS of HS-WIM collected before the enforcement makes the pavement life short more than others. On the other hand, the ALS of KPRP causes the longest life under same thickness of slab. Thus, it is possible that actual performance life of JCP under the traffic like ALS of HS-WIM could be short than predicted life if the pavement was designed based on ALS provided by KPRP. CONCLUSIONS : It is necessary to choose more reliable and practical ALS when designing JCP because ALS can be fairly affected by acquisition methods. In addition, it is important to extend performance life of the pavement in service by controlling traffic load such as overweight enforcement.

PURPOSES: The problem under this circumstance is that the erosion not only drops strength of the steel dowel bar but also comes with volume expansion of the steel dowel bar which can reduce load transferring efficiency of the steel dowel bar. To avoid this erosion problem, alternative dowers bars are developed. METHODS: In this study, the bearing stresses between the FRP tube dowel bar and concrete slab are calculated and compared with its allowable bearing stress to check its structural stability in the concrete pavement. These comparisons are conducted with several cross-sections of FRP tube dowel bars. Comprehensive laboratory tests including the shear load-deflection test on a full-scale specimen and the full-scale accelerated joint concrete pavement test are conducted and the results were compared with those from the steel dowel bar. RESULTS: In all cross-sections of FRP tube dowel bars, computed bearing stresses between the FRP tube dowel bar and concrete slab are less than their allowable stress levels. The pultrusion FRP-tube dowel bar show better performance on direct shear tests on full-scale specimen and static compression tests at full-scale concrete pavement joints than prepreg and filament-winding FRP-tube dowel bar. CONCLUSIONS: The FRP tube dowel bars as alternative dowel bar are invulnerable to erosion that may be caused by moisture from masonry joint or bottom of the pavement system. Also, the pultrusion FRP-tube dowel bar performed very well on the laboratory evaluation.
Load transfer efficiency (LTE) reflects the structural performance of doweled and undoweled joints of Jointed Concrete Pavement (JCP). A 3-dimensional (3-D) model of JCP was built using ABAQUS software in this study. Three concrete slabs were placed on bonded sublayers composed of a base and subgrade. Spring elements were used to connect the adjacent slabs at joints. Different spring constants were input to the model to simulate different joint stiffness of the concrete pavement. The LTE of the joint increased with an increase of the spring constant. The effects of material properties and geometric shape on the behavior of JCP were analyzed using different elastic modulus and thickness of the slab and base in the modeling. The results showed the elastic modulus of the subgrade affected the behavior of the slab and LTE more than that of the base and the thickness of the slab and base. The effects of a negative temperature gradient on the behavior of the slab and LTE were more than that of positive and zero temperature gradients. Joints with low stiffness were more sensitive to the temperature gradient of the slab.
This paper presents behavior of concrete pavement at transverse joint subject to static test load. The test was conducted on 1/10 scale model in the laboratory. Load transfer across the crack is developed either by the interlocking action of the aggregate particles at the faces of the joint or by a combination of aggregate interlock and mechanical devices such as dowel bars. In this study, significant three variables considered to the performance of joints were selected. : (a)diameter of dowel bars(2.5mm, 3.0mm, 4.0mm), (b)presence or absence of dowel bars, (c)aggregate types(crushed stone, round stone). Experimental results were analyzed to find relationships among displacement of discontinuous plane at jointed slab, load transfer efficiency and joint opening, etc. Displacement of discontinuous plane at joint was decreased according to the increase of dowel bar diameter. In addition, it is found that model slabs made using crushed stone had better load transfer characteristics by aggregate interlock than model slabs made using similarly graded round stone. Displacement of discontinuous plane was increased according to the increase of loading. In addition, it was decreased as dowel diameter(2.5mm, 3.0mm, 4.0mm) was increased. In the case of slab without dowel bars, displacement of discontinuous plane was greatly increased and load transfer effciency of slab applied crushed stone was shown 30 percent greater than round stone. In addition, load transfer efficiency of slabs, which were made using crushed and round stone without dowel bars, was decreased to 20 percent and 30 percent, respectively as it was compared with slabs made us-ing dowel bars.

The excellent load transfer at transverse joints ensures the high performance of jointed plane concrete pavements(JPCP). Load transfer efficiency(LTE) is affected by dowel-bars, aggregate interlock and types of underlying layers, and these factors have to be modelled adequately for a reasonable analysis of JPCP. Generally, the joint stiffness has been represented by a spring model for the shear transfer by aggregate interlock or dowels. However dowel-bars, aggregate interlock and types of underlying layers have not been considered together in the design of joints. In this study, the joint stiffness that considered those factors was presented by comparing LTE obtained using FWD(Falling Weight Deflectometer) with theoretical results obtained using the finite element analysis. In addition, the effects of temperature and concrete age, on the joint stiffness were investigated.
In this paper, it has been studied about the CRCO to maintain or rehabilitate the aged JCP. The CRCO and JCO was constructed at useless section of Seo-Hae-Ahn express highway in South Korea. The performance evaluation was conducted. Especially, it was focused on the roll of longitudinal reinforced steels inserted into the CRCO. On crack survey results from field construction section, the reflection cracks at joint of the existing pavement occurred in CRCO. However, due to the constraints of longitudinal reinforced steels, crack width was small. Total crack length and quantity in the CRCO more than that in the JCO. And crack spacing in the CRCO was narrower than it in the CRCP. Through the bonding strength test results, if the cold milling and cleaning as well as surface treatment is applied, there will be no debonding problem at interlayer in the early age. From analysis of the horizontal behavior at the joint, the longitudinal reinforced steels constrained crack width which became wider than initial state over time. Also, that steel in the CRCO reduced the horizontal movement due to temperature variation(4 times than that in the JCO). But, if interface is debonded, the roll decreased. Vertical VWG data showed that CRCO did not occur debonding problem at steel location, but there was some problem in JCO. It was confirmed by field coring. The tensile strain appeared in the CRCO, But the compressive strain occurred in the JCO in early age. Through the FWD test result, deflection in the CRCO was less than that in the JCO. And K value in the CRCO was greater than it in the JCO.

This paper investigates the effect of 3-dimensional FE models to evaluation results of jointed concrete pavements which is back-calculated by AREA method. Sensitivity of 3-dimensional FE models developed to simulate the behavior of real jointed concrete pavement are analyzed after compared with 2-dimensional FE models using ILLISLAB. In comparison with 2-dimensional models, influence of concrete contraction under loading plate and base layer on surface deflections is more than that of loading configuration. Deflections at 3-dimensional model between linear and nonlinear temperature distribution under same temperature difference are similar, but noticeable differences are investigated in low elastic modulus of foundations. Dynamic deflections under loading plate are larger than static deflections in high elastic modulus of foundation, but smaller in low elastic modulus. Lower dynamic modulus of subgrade reactions are backcalculated by dynamic deflections than by static deflections. But reverse trend is investigated in the backcalculated elastic modulus of concrete which describes trends of the field backcalculation values calculated from AREA method.

This study was conducted to evaluate effect of geogrid and fabric, which are used underneath the overlaid asphalt pavement for retarding reflection cracking by simulated laboratory test. In this study, an interlayer at the interface between old concrete pavement surface and overlaid asphalt mixture, and polymer-modifier were used as an effort of retarding reflection crack initiation and for strengthening mixture. Five products were used in preparation of asphalt concrete beam specimen which was tack coated on top of jointed concrete block. Simulated Mode I and II fracture test were conducted under wheel loading and results were compared among those products. From the test results, several material and reinforcement combinations were observed to have a significant retardation effect against reflection cracking. The most effectively strengthened pavement against reflection cracking was found to be the LDPE-modifier asphalt mixture with a grid reinforcement at the bottom.
This research was conducted to analyze the features of the critical tensile stresses at the top and bottom of the concrete slab in the jointed concrete pavement (JCP) when subjected to both the environmental and vehicle loads. First, the stress distribution in JCP was analyzed when the system was subjected to only the environmental loads or the vehicle loads by using the finite element model of JCP. Then, the stresses were analyzed when the system was subjected to the environmental and vehicle loads at the same time. From this study, it was found that the critical tensile stresses at the slab bottom under the vehicle loads were almost constant regardless of the loading positions once the loads were applied at the positions having some distance from the transverse joint. The critical tensile stresses at the slab bottom could be obtained using the model consisting of normal springs for underlying layers by adding the critical stresses due to the environmental loads and the vehicle loads for the curled-down slab, and by subtracting the critical stress due to the environmental loads from that due to the vehicle loads for the curled-up slab. The critical tensile stresses at the top of the slab could be obtained using the model consisting of tensionless springs for underlying layers by adding the critical stress due to the environmental loads and the stress at the middle of the slab under the vehicle loads applied at the joint for the curled-up slab. An alternative to obtain the critical stresses at the top of the slab for the curled-up slab was to use the critical stresses under only the environmental loads obtained from the model having normal springs for underlying layers.
This study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of expedite repairing of concrete pavements using precast concrete pavement method and to investigate the effectiveness of slab connection methods. In the demonstration construction, four slabs of jointed concrete pavements were replaced with the precast slabs. First, precast concrete slabs were designed and fabricated, then existing slabs were cut and removed, and finally precast slabs were installed. The slabs were leveled and pockets, holes, and space between the slab bottom and the underlying layer were grouted. From the demonstration construction, details about the design and construction of the precast pavements for repairing of pavements were evaluated. In addition, the slab connection methods such as pocket and hole connection methods were applied in the construction and the slab curling behaviors at the joints that include those connection methods were compared. The results showed that both slab connection methods were applicable, and the hole connection method was superior.
