Joints are provided in cement concrete pavements to control transverse and longitudinal cracking that occur due to restrained deformations caused by moisture and temperature variations in the slab. But the constuction of joints reduces the load-carrying capacity of the pavement at the joints, and pavements have been deteriorated by cracks at the slab edges along the joints due to traffic loads. Therefore, it is important to analyze the
behavior of joints accurately in the design of cement concrete pavements.
In this study, the mechanical behavior of cement concrete pavement slabs is analyzed by the plate-finite element model, and Winkler foundation model is adopted to analyze the subgrades. The load transfer mechan¬ism of joints are composed of dowel action, aggregate interlocking, and tied-key action, and the analytical pro¬gram is developed using these joint models.
Using this numerical model as an analysis tool, the effects of joint parameters on the behavior of pavements are investigated.

This paper presents a stiffness modeling of a low-DOF parallel robot, which takes into account of elastic deformations of joints and links, A low-DOF parallel robot is defined as a spatial parallel robot which has less than six degrees of freedom. Differently from serial chains in a full 6-DOF parallel robot, some of those in a low-DOF parallel robot may be subject to constraint forces as well as actuation forces. The reaction forces due to actuations and constraints in each serial chain can be determined by making use of the theory of reciprocal screws. It is shown that the stiffness of an F-DOF parallel robot can be modeled such that the moving platform is supported by 6 springs related to the reciprocal screws of actuations (F) and constraints (6-F). A general $6{\times}6$ stiffness matrix is derived, which is the sum of the stiffness matrices of actuations and constraints, The compliance of each spring can be precisely determined by modeling the compliance of joints and links in a serial chain as follows; a link is modeled as an Euler beam and the compliance matrix of rotational or prismatic joint is modeled as a $6{\times}6$ diagonal matrix, where one diagonal element about the rotation axis or along the sliding direction is infinite. By summing joint and link compliance matrices with respect to a reference frame and applying unit reciprocal screw to the resulting compliance matrix of a serial chain, the compliance of a spring is determined by the resulting infinitesimal displacement. In order to illustrate this methodology, the stiffness of a Tricept parallel robot has been analyzed. Finally, a numerical example of the optimal design to maximize stiffness in a specified box-shape workspace is presented.
This paper described the ultimate strength and deformation limit of welded T-joints in cold-formed square hollow sections. Previous studies showed that the strength of a T-joint still increases with increasing deformations at a ratio of branch width to chord width (${\beta}$) of below 0.8. Therefore, the strength at a certain deformation (chord flange indentation) limit can be regarded as the ultimate strength of a T-joint. The chord flange failure modes were investigated for the ratio of branch width to chord width (${\beta}$) and the ratio of chord width to chord web thickness (B/T). Experimental results including tests done by Kato proposed a deformation limit of 3%B for $16.7{\leq}B/T{\leq}41.6$ and $0.27{\leq}{\beta}{\leq}0.8$. The strength formula of CIDECT and other researchers were compared with the test results. Finally, the strength formula based on yield-line theory was proposed.

Recently, the concern for displacement-based design has been increased as a performance based design method in which the deformation capacity of structure becomes so important. In this paper, a process is presented to accurately evaluate the deformation capacity of multistory RC frame structure. In the calculation of drift of frame, the deformation of beam and column as well as the deformation of anchorage and joint are considered. From the comparison between previous test and calculation results, the usefulness of the process is verified. The proposed process is also applied to the multiple story RC frame buildings(5, 10, 15 stories) designed to have strong column-weak beam. The results showed that the deformation capacity of the buildings could be not properly evaluated when deformations of anchorage and joint were ignored.

Bellows are corrugated mechanical elements used to absorb displacements or vibrations caused by temperature changes, pressure, earthquakes, waves, etc., which are welded to flanges or directly connected to pipes. Expansion joint bellows must not only be designed to sufficiently withstand the internal pressure of the pipes but also accommodate axial, transverse, and rotational deformations to minimize the transfer of forces to the sensitive components of the system. Bellows have various types of corrugations, but U-type bellows are most commonly used in general piping systems. In this study, the behavior of U-shaped one-, two-, and three-ply bellows with the same inner diameter under pressure and forced displacement was analyzed using the finite element method. The results were compared with the design formula in the Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association (EJMA)'s code. Manufacturer data were used for the applied pressure and force displacement. The behavioral characteristics of the three cases were compared via structural analysis because the stress levels will be different for each model, even if they have the same inner diameter. Since the analytical model has an axisymmetric shape but displacement occurs in the transverse direction, the finite element model was composed of 1/2 of the whole model, and ANSYS Workbench 17.2 was employed for the analysis.

This paper proposes a novel method for increasing the distortional frame rigidity of off-rail box girder bridges for cranes by reinforcing the diaphragm with staggered truss. The study starts by using the Matrix Displacement Method to determine the shear angle of the staggered truss diaphragm under two assumptions: hinge joint and rigid joint. To obtain closed-form solutions for the transversal and longitudinal deformations and warping stress of the crane girder, the study employs the Initial Parameter Method and considers the compatibility of shear deformation at joints between the diaphragms and the girder. The theoretical solutions are validated through finite element analysis, which also confirms that the hinge-joint assumption accurately represents the shear angle of the staggered truss diaphragm in girder distortion. Additionally, the study conducts extensive parameter analyses to examine the impact of staggered truss dimensions on distortional stress and deformation. Furthermore, the study compares the distortional warping stresses of crane girders reinforced with staggered truss diaphragms and those reinforced with perforated ones, emphasizing the importance of incorporating stagger truss in diaphragms. Overall, this paper provides a thorough evaluation of the proposed approach's effectiveness in enhancing the distortional frame rigidity of off-rail box girder bridges for cranes. The findings offer valuable insights into the design and reinforcement of diaphragms using staggered truss to enhance the structural performance of crane girders.

Residual stress induced in U-bending and tube-to-tubesheet joint processes of PWR's row-1 heat exchanger tube was measured by X-ray method and Hole-Drilling Method(HDM). Compressive residual stresses(-) at the extrados surface were induced in U-bending, and its maximum value reached -319 MPa in axial direction at the position of $\psi$ = $0^{\circ}$. Tensile residual stresses(+) of $\sigma_{zz}$ = 45 MPa and $\sigma_{\theta\theta}$ = 25 MPa were introduced in the intrados surface at the position of $\psi$ = $0^{\circ}$. Maximum tensile residual stress of 170 MPa was measured at the flank side at the position of $\psi$ = $90^{\circ}$, i.e., at apex region. It was observed that higher stress gradient was generated at the irregular transition regions (ITR). The trend of residual stress induced by U bending process of the tubes was found to be related with the change of ovality. The residual stress induced by the explosive joint method was found to be lower than that by the mechanical roll method. The gradient of residual stress along the expanded tube was highest at the transition region (TR), and the residual stress in circumferential direction was found to be higher than the residual stress in axial direction.

It has been shown that many Reinforced Concrete(RC) structures designed without seismic details have experienced brittle shear failures in the beam-column joint area and resulted in large permanent deformations and structural collapse. In this study, experimental investigations into the performance of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joints strengthened with the carbon fiber-reinforced polymer(CFRP) under cyclic loading were presented. The CFRP has been applied by choosing different combinations and locations to determine the effective way to improve structural performances of joints. Eight beam-column joints were tested to investigate behaviors of each specimen under cyclic load and to compare performances of seismic retrofit. According to the experimental study, the retrofit strengthened with the CFRP provides significant improvements of flexural capacity and ductility of beam-column joints originally built without seismic details.
Semi-rigid connections are the actual behavior of beam-to-column connections in steel frames. However, the behavior of semi-rigid connections is not taken into account for the simplicity in the conventional analysis and design of steel frames. A computer-based analysis and design has been studied for the three-dimensional steel frames with semi-rigid connections. The nonlinear analysis which includes the effects of the flexibility of connections is used for this study. It is designed according to the buckling and combined stress constraints under the present loading after the joint deformations and the member end forces of the space frame are determined by the stiffness matrix method. The semi-rigid connection type is limited to the top and bottom angles with a double web angle connection. The Frye-Morris polynomial model is used to describe the non-linear behavior of semi-rigid connections. Various design examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the method. The results of design and analysis of unbraced semi-rigid frames are compared to the results of unbraced rigid frames under the same design requirements.

This paper details a testing facility ("NATURAL FIRE FACILITY") that allows closely-controlled experimental testing on full-scale sub-frames while reproducing the spatially transient temperature conditions measured in real fires. Using this test facility, an experimental investigation of six steel sub-frames under a natural fire was carried out at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Coimbra. The main objective of these tests was to provide insight into the influence of these connection types on the behaviour of steel sub-structures under fire. The experimental layout is defined by two thermally insulated HEA300 columns and an unprotected IPE300 beam with 5.7 m span, supporting a composite concrete slab. Beam-to-column connections are representative of the most common joint type used on buildings: welded joints and extended, flush and partial depth plate. Finally, the available results are presented and discussed: evolution of the steel temperature; development of displacements and local deformations and failure modes on the joints zone.
