  • Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a genetic disorder that affects approximately 1 in 15,000-30,000 people, with the majority of patients inheriting the disorder via autosomal recessive inheritance. PCD is characterized by abnormal ciliary ultrastructure and/or function, which results in impaired mucociliary clearance and recurrent respiratory infections. Despite the presence of symptoms from birth, many patients with PCD remain undiagnosed until adulthood. Many advances in the diagnosis of PCD have occurred in recent years, including nasal nitric oxide assays, ciliary motility tests, and genetic sequencing. Early diagnosis and symptom management may reduce morbidity and mortality from PCD improving the patient's quality of life.

  • Pseudogenes are genomic regions that contain gene-like sequences that have a high similarity to the known genes but are nonfunctional. They are categorized into processed, unprocessed, and unitary pseudogenes. Unprocessed pseudogenes generated by duplications can be problematic in sequencing approaches in molecular diagnostics. We discuss the risk of misdiagnosis when investigating genes with pseudogenes of high homology, and describe a method for identifying these small and annoying differences between parent genes and pseudogenes, including parent gene-specific assay design.

  • Chromosomal microarray (CMA) is primarily recommended for detecting clinically significant copy number variants (CNVs) in the genetic diagnosis of developmental delay, intellectual disability, autism, and congenital malformations. Prenatal CMA is recommended when a fetus has major congenital malformations. The main principles of CMA can be divided into array comparative genomic hybridization and single-nucleotide polymorphism arrays. In the current CMA platforms, these two principles are combined, and detection of genetic abnormalities including CNVs and absence of heterozygosity is facilitated. In this review, I described practical assessment of CMA testing regarding to laboratory management of CMA, interpretation of CNVs, and special considerations for comprehensive genetic counseling.

  • The welds tent to be weakened if it is exposed to the air during the welding process. In titanium welding with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, inappropriate colors of the welds, such as purple/red, blue, yellow, gray, white and pink represents that it is contaminated by oxygen and nitrogen in the air. Shielding gases can be used to protect welds from the contamination. In addition, Weld metal and heat affected zone (HAZ) are also shielded from the air when it is cooled down to the room temperature. In this paper, appropriate shielding gases for the shape and form of Trailing Shielding Jig and torch shielding ($13{\sim}20{\ell}/min$), after shielding ($22{\sim}30{\ell}/min$), and back shielding ($25{\sim}30{\ell}/min$) are studied.

  • This paper describes the evaluations of tension-compression fatigue characteristics and life for glass fiber/epoxy laminate composite applied to railway bogie to reduce weight. Test samples of tension-compression fatigue were composed of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness woven laminate composites with different stacking sequence of warp-direction, fill-direction and ${\pm}45^{\circ}$-direction. The tension-compression fatigue test was conducted with stress ratio (R) of -1 and frequency of 5Hz. Goodman diagram were used to evaluate the fatigue characteristics and life of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness satin woven laminate composite. Anti-buckling jig was designed to prevent buckling of specimen under compression load. The test results showed that the fatigue characteristics of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness satin woven laminate composite with stacking sequence of warp-direction had a good performance in comparison with that of SM490 used to conventional metal railway bogie.

  • The adjustable dental impression trays were made for being adjusted their width automatically along the width of patient's dental arch. The purpose of this study was to investigate the retentive force of adjustable dental impression trays made of different synthetic resin materials. Three pairs of adjustable trays were made of ABS(acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) synthetic resin, polyurethane synthetic resin and polycarbonate synthetic resin with a hole and without a rim on the border area of them. The experiment was done with the horse-shoe shaped metal plate to pull out the set impression body from the tray jig which was made for holding the tray on the lower part of Universal Testing Machine(UTM, Zwick Z020, Zwick Co., Germany). After the alginate impression in the tray was allowed to set four minutes, a tensile force was applied at right angles to the tray which had been previously seated on the jig. The force was applied to measure a maximum force by use of UTM at a constant strain rate 100mm per minute. The results obtained in this study were as follows : 1. The upper trays were showed higher retentive force than lower trays in three tray materials. 2. There was no significant difference in the retentive force of the tray materials(p>0.05).

  • In this paper, a design and fabrication of 4 W power amplifier for the WiMAX frequency band(2.3~2.7 GHz) are presented. The adopted active device is a commercially available GaN HEMT chip of Triquint Company, which is recently released. The optimum input and output impedances are extracted for power amplifier design using a specially self-designed tuning jig. Using the adopted impedances value, class-F power amplifier was designed based on EM simulation. For integration and matching in the small package module, spiral inductors and interdigital capacitors are used. The fabricated power amplifier with $4.4{\times}4.4\;mm^2$ shows the efficiency above 50 % and harmonic suppression above 40 dBc for second(2nd) and third(3rd) harmonic at the output power of 36 dBm.

  • In the current machining industry, machining precision is necessary and machining is being carried out. In this ultra-precision machining industry, the fixation of the workpiece is very important and the degree of machining depends on the degree of fixation of the workpiece. In ultra-precision machining, various methods, such as using a vise chuck or the like and using bolt nut coupling, are used for fixing a workpiece to an existing machine tool. In particular, when the precision gripping force of the jig is insufficient during machining of the ultra-precision mold parts, the machining material shakes due to the vibration or friction, and the machining precision is lowered. In the ultra-precision machining of power transmission parts, such as gears, the accuracy of the product is then determined. In addition, the amount of heat generated during machining has a significant effect on the machining accuracy. This is because the vibration value changes according to the grasp force of the jig that fixes the workpiece, and the change in the calorific value due to the change in the main shaft rotation speed of the ultra-precision machining. The increase in the spindle rotation speed during machining decreased the heat generation during machining, and the machining accuracy was also good, and it was confirmed that the machining heat changed according to the fixed state of the workpiece and the machining accuracy also changed. In this study, we try to optimize the driving part of the power vise by using structural analysis, rather than the power vise, using the basic mechanical-type power unit.
