  • The speed-up of conventional trains is considered as one of the efficient methods to relieve traffic jam and to increase the capacity of transportation. In this study, we measured and analyzed the ride comfort of a push-pull Saemaeul Train with speed-up of 5km/h in curves and 10km/h on straight tracks as compared with present operation speed of the push-pull Saemaeul Trains. Four main lines-Honam, Kyungboo, Janghang, Kyungjeon- were chosen as representative lines for speed-up feasibility study. The increase of mean ride comfort index in case of speed-up is 0.5-2㏈. The mean ride comfort index of vertical direction in case of speed-up is 107-110㏈ for Honam line, 104-112㏈ for Kyungboo line, 108-112㏈ for Janghang line and 105-108㏈ for Kyungjeon line, which are rather high as compared with German trains of similar grade with maximum vehicle speed of 160km/h.

  • This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effects of hetero-chitosans and their oligosaccharides against three Gram-negative bacteria and five Gram-positive bacteria. Nine classes of hetero-chitosan oligosaccharides consisted of partially deacetylated chitosans; 90%, 75%, and 50% deacetylated chitosans. Based on molecular weight, they were prepared using an ultrafiltration membrane reactor system. Seventy-five percent deacetylated chitosan showed the highest antimicrobial acitivity as compared with the 90% and 50% deacetylated chitosan, and the activity was dependent on their molecular weights. It was apparent that the growth of Gram-negative bacteria is less inhibited in the presence of the heterochitosans and their oligosaccharides than Gram-positive bacteria. These results revealed that the antimicrobial effects of hetero-chitosans and their oligosaccharides depend on the degree of deacetylation, and their molecular weights.

  • This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effects of hetero-chitosans and their oligosaccharides on the halophilic bacterium, Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Nine classes of hetero-chitosan oligosaccharides were prepared based on their molecular weights, using an ultrafiltration membrane reactor system with chitosanase and celluase, from partially different deacetylated chitosans, 90%, 75%, and 50% deacetylated chitosan, respectively. Thirty-two strains of V. parahaemolyticus were isolated from various marine organisms such as shellfish, shrimps, octopus, and seabirds. Seventy-five percent deacetylated chitosan showed the highest antimicrobial acitivity. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 0.5 mg/ml on 14 strains of V. parahaemolyticus, and MIC of the rest strains (18 strains) was 1.0 mg/ml. In addition, MIC of most hetero-chitosan oligosaccharides was 8.0 mg/ml. The results revealed that the antimicrobial effects of hetero-chitosans and their oligosaccharides against V. parahaemolyticus depend on the degree of deacetylation, their molecular weights, and strains tested.

  • To develop new functional materials, Saccharina japonica (S. japonica) was cultivated with Phellinus linteus (P. linteus) mycelia by solid culture. S. japonica was fermented with P. linteus mycelia. The various radical scavenging activities of extracts of fermented S. japonica with P. linteus mycelia (FSPM) were investigated and compared to the antioxidant capabilities of unfermented S. japonica and P. linteus mycelia. The antioxidant activities of FSPM extracts were evaluated using ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity. FSPM showed stronger free radical scavenging abilities than P. linteus mycelia or S. japonica alone. These results indicate that fermentation of S. japonica changes its chemical nature and could provide beneficial antioxidant effects.

  • Angiotensin I converting enzyme [EC 3.4.15.11 (ACE) is important in the maintenance of blood pressure. The enzyme removes histidyl-leucine from angiotensin I to form the blood-vessel-constricting octapeptide, angiotensin II, and degrades vasodilative bradykinin in blood vessels and stimulates e release of aldosterone in the adrenal cortex. • Chitosan is a natural biopolymer of N-acetylglucosamine (-1,4 linked 2-acetamido-D-glucose), which is obtained after alkaline deacetylation of the chitin derived from the cell walls of lower plants and in the skeletal tissues of lower animals including arthropods and mollusks. In the recent studies, chitin and chitosan have attracted interest for converting them to oligosaccharides because the oligosaccharides are not only water-soluble but also possess versatile functional properties such as antimicobial activity (Jeon and Kim, 2000; Jeon et al., 2001). • The term antioxidant is defined as my substance that, when present at low concentrations compared to that of an oxidizable substrate, significantly delays or inhibits oxidation of that substrate. Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), tertiary-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) and propyl gallate (PG) may be added to food products to retard lipid oxidation. • This paper is concerned with the design of roller profiles in tube/pipe straightener with both methods of Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Engineering. Design analysis is carried out from two point of view. The one is the research in the minimization of tube pitch which was very important factor in levelling process. In order to minimize tube pitch, profiles of the roller were calculated so that the contact region between roller and tube was maximized. The other is determination of an optimum amount of intermesh for the proper progress without a jam in levelling process. Generally the jamming trouble was casued by excessive amount of intermesh in levelling process. The optimum amount of intermesh was determined through the finite element analysis.
