Hip muscle activation and strengthening exercise programs are often used to prevent and treat various lower extremity injuries. Common exercise programs include squat exercises. The purposes of this study were to investigate gluteus medius (GMED) and tensor fasciae latae (TFL) muscle activity, and to assess the GMED/TFL ratio during squat exercises involving different isometric hip contraction conditions. Different types of isometric hip contraction were standard squat without hip contraction, squats with isometric hip adduction, and squats with isometric hip abduction. Twenty (10 males and 10 females) healthy subjects ($23.7{\pm}2.8$ years old) were recruited. Subjects performed the squat exercises with the back supported by a wall and knees flexed to $60^{\circ}$. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to measure GMED and TFL activity. One-way repeated analysis of variance was used to compare GMED and TFL muscle activity and the GMED/TFL ratio. GMED and TFL EMG activity was significantly higher during squats with isometric hip adduction and abduction compared with the standard squat without hip contraction (p<.05). Between the isometric hip adduction and abduction contraction conditions, only the TFL EMG activity was significantly higher during squats with isometric hip adduction than isometric hip abduction (p<.05). The GMED/TFL ratio was significantly higher during squats with isometric hip adduction than isometric hip abduction (p<.05). Squats with isometric hip adduction and abduction improved GMED and TFL muscle activity. Furthermore, the GMED/TFL ratio was higher during isometric hip adduction than isometric hip abduction. Our data indicate that squat exercises involving isometric hip adduction enhance GMED muscle activity.
We prove the Hyers-Ulam stability of linear d-isometries in linear d-normed Banach modules over a unital $C^*-algebra$ and of linear isometries in Banach modules over a unital $C^*-algebra$. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate d-isometric $C^*-algebra$ isomor-phisms between linear d-normed $C^*-algebras$ and isometric $C^*-algebra$ isomorphisms between $C^*-algebras$, and d-isometric Poisson $C^*-algebra$ isomorphisms between linear d-normed Poisson $C^*-algebras$ and isometric Poisson $C^*-algebra$ isomorphisms between Poisson $C^*-algebras$. We moreover prove the Hyers-Ulam stability of their d-isometric homomorphisms and of their isometric homomorphisms.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of concurrent and reciprocal isometric contraction and angle of ankle joint on fatigue of concentrically contracting contralateral dorsiflexor and plantar flexor. Seventeen able-bodied subjects participated in the study. Concurrent and reciprocal isometric contraction were performed under three different ankle joint angles (dorsiflexion, neutral position, plantar flexion). During concurrent or reciprocal isometric contraction. fatigue of concentrically contracting contralateral tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, and soleus was investigated and compared. There was no interaction between different ankle joint angles and direction of isometric contraction (p<.05). No significant differences were found among three different ankle joint angles (p<.05). Contralateral muscle fatigability was lower in reciprocal isometric contraction than that in concurrent isometric contraction (p<.05). Therefore, the findings of this study suggest that reciprocal isometric contraction is more beneficial than concurrent isometric contraction inducing less fatigability during contralateral concentric contraction.
To study the characteristics of EMG power spectrum of masticatory muscles during sustained isometric contraction and recovery at various contraction times, the author analysed the EMG signals of anterior temporal and masseter muscles before, during, and after sustained isometric contraction at 50% level of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) for 15,30,60 seconds. Twelve normal subjects were included in this study. The author came to following conclusions from the results. 1. MMF of anterior temporal muscle in the contraction period was significantly higher than that of masseter muscle during sustained isometric contraction regardless of isometric contraction times (p<0.05). 2. MMF in the contraction period decreased as the contraction time increased during sustained isometric contraction in both temporal and masseter muscles(p<0.05). 3. SMF in the contraction period increased as the contraction tie increased during sustained isometric contraction in both temporal and masseter muscles(p<0.01). 4. MMF in the first part of recovery period (20 seconds) decreased as the contraction time increased during sustained isometric contraction(p<0.05). However, MMF in the later parts of recovery period (20-120 seconds) showed no significant differences. 5. MMF of anterior temporl muscle in the recovery period was significantly higher than that of masseter muscle after sustained isometric contraction regardless of isometric contraction times (p<0.05). 6. The recovery rate of MF reached 100% in 100 seconds after the isometric contraction regardless of isometric contraction times.
Background: Hip flexor muscles are very important in the hip joint structure as a mover and stabilizer. In addition, isometric hip flexor strength in the supine position needs to be considered with isometric core strength (WICS) to measure a precise strength in a clinical way. Objects: We compared isometric hip flexor strength in the supine position in subjects with and without WICS (between factors) and conditions with and without an external support (within factors). Methods: A total of 34 subjects (16 with WICS, 18 without WICS) participated in this study. We used the double-bent leg-lowering test to divide the subjects in two groups according to the presence of WICS. Isometric hip flexor strength was evaluated in the supine position both with and without an external support condition. The two-way mixed analysis of variance was applied to identify significant differences between groups (with vs. without WICS: between factors) and conditions (with vs. without an external support: within factors). Statistical significance was set at α = 0.05. Results: In subjects with WICS, isometric hip flexor strength was greater with an external support than without it (p = 0.0064). In subjects without WICS, there were no significant differences in isometric hip flexor strength in the presence or absence of an external support (p = 0.075). The isometric hip flexor strength was significantly greater with an external support condition in particular in subjects with WICS. Conclusion: The findings of this study reported that an external support condition in individuals with WICS may contribute to the improvement of isometric hip flexion strength in the supine position. Therefore, isometric core strength should be evaluated to distinguish the weakness between core region and hip flexors.
An isometry of hyperbolic space can be written as a composition of the reflection in the isometric sphere and two Euclidean isometries on the boundary at infinity. The isometric sphere is also used to construct the Ford fundamental domains for the action of discrete groups of isometries. In this paper, we study the isometric spheres of isometries acting on hyperbolic 4-space. This is a new phenomenon which occurs in hyperbolic 4-space that the two isometric spheres of a parabolic isometry can intersect transversally. We provide one geometric way to classify isometries of hyperbolic 4-space using the isometric spheres.
Objective: To investigate muscle strength after short term isotonic and isometric exercise. Method: Twenty two healthy men and women were randomly designed isometric and isotonic exercises. Each participant was asked to perform 10 sessions of isometric and isotonic exercises. The assessment measured pre and post 10 sessions exercises by Cybex 340. Result: Isometric exercise significantly increased by $60^{\circ}$/sec and isotonic exercise significantly increased by $120^{\circ}$/sec, $180^{\circ}$/sec. Isometric exercise and isotonic exercise increased by all speeds. Most increased at $120^{\circ}$/sec, $180^{\circ}$/sec by isometric exercise and $60^{\circ}$/see by isotonic exercise but not significantly. Conclusion: Short term isotonic and isometric exercise increase muscle strength. Even if the exercise session is short term, the sessions increase muscle strength.
Let T be a bounded linear operator on a complex Hilbert space H. For a positive integer k, an operator T is said to be a k-quasi-2-isometric operator if T∗k(T∗2T2 − 2T∗T + I)Tk = 0, which is a generalization of 2-isometric operator. In this paper, we consider basic structural properties of k-quasi-2-isometric operators. Moreover, we give some examples of k-quasi-2-isometric operators. Finally, we prove that generalized Weyl’s theorem holds for polynomially k-quasi-2-isometric operators.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find out changes in skin temperature, which is one of the regulatory systems of homeostasis, according to the isotonic-isometric exercise type, and changes in skin temperature according to gender and BMI index through isotonic-isometric exercise. Design: Randomized Controlled Trial. Methods: This study was conducted for 28 healthy male and female students from Department of Physical Therapy, G University. Subjects carried out isometric-isotonic exercise using dumbbells of 4kg and 8kg, respectively. And skin temperature was measured by using a computer infrared thermography. Results: The isometric exercise group was significantly difference changes in temperature by measurement time. Conclusion: In order to find out the effect of isometric exercise and isotonic exercise on skin temperature changes of biceps brachii, this study was carried out for 28 healthy male and female adults. The result of this study may helpful as basic data for orthopedic physical therapy.
In this paper, we show that for every $N{\in}\mathbb{N}$, isometric N-Jordan operators on Hilbert spaces are power regular. Moreover, the only normaloid or 2-isometric, N-Jordan operators are isometries.
