  • In this work, a review of mechanical metamaterials and seismic protection systems that use them is carried out, focusing on passive protection systems. During the last years, a wide variety of classical systems of seismic protection have demonstrated to be an effective and practical way of reducing the seismic vulnerability of buildings, maintaining their health and structural integrity. However, with the emergence of metamaterials, which allow obtaining uncommon mechanical properties, new procedures and devices with high performance have been developed, reducing the seismic risk through novel approaches such as: seismic shields and the redirection of seismic waves; the use of stop band gaps and the construction of buried mass resonators; the design of pentamodal base isolators. These ideas are impacting traditional areas of structural engineering such as the design and building of highly efficient base isolation systems. In this work, recent advances in new seismic protection technologies and researches that integrate mechanical metamaterials are presented. A complete bibliometric analysis was carried out to identify and classify relevant authors and works related with passive seismic protection system based on mechanical metamaterial (pSPSmMMs). Finally, possible future scenarios for study and development of seismic isolators based on mechanical metamaterials are shown, identifying the relevant topics that have not yet been explored, as well as those with the greatest potential for future application.

  • Base isolation systems are economic and efficient for the control of structural vibration. In this study, the base isolators of LRB(laminated rubber bearing) type which have been generally used are fabricated and tested. From the static and dynamic tests, the characteristics of the base isolators, considering strain-hardening, hysteretic damping and horizontal stiffnesses, etc., are verified and particularly the feasibility as base isolation devices is discussed. Consequently, the test results are compared with the analytical ones that are derived from idealization as a bilinear model.

  • The paper presents an application of the model to a practical problem of train-induced vibrations. The aim of this study is to vertify for performance of isolators which was developed in KRRI supported floating slab track. Laboratory tests on developed isolations show that the energy dissipation, under cyclic loading of constant amplitude, can be suitably represented by a combination of a viscous and a hysteretic damping. Also, other tests for structural performance are carried out, such as elastic material test, compression test and so on. The specimen, $400{\times}400{\times}300mm$, is placed between two stiff steel plates designed to uniformly distribute the compression stress on the surface.

  • In this study a vibration isolation system with the cradle-type support was designed so as to reduce the transient vibration due to positioning motion of the moving mass on worktable as well as to achieve the desired isolation efficiency on the floor vibration. The design procedure was performed in the two steps. The first step to select appropriate isolators to meet the isolation efficiency, and the second step is to reduce the transient vibration of the worktable by adopting the cradle-type support. After the application of the selected isolators with the cradle-type support to the system it was shown that the required vibration criterion(VC-D) was easily satisfied and that the undesirable transient vibration was reduced remarkably.

  • The generation of the intermodulation noises in microwave isolators has been studied in relation to the characteristics of YIG ferrites designed for this application. We have investigated the influences of porosity and crystalline anisotropy related to the magnetic loss, which causes the generation of intermodulation signals. The power dependence of the intermodulation power level is stressed as the crystalline anisotropy decreases. These results are consistent with the nonlinear effects of a single normal mode before the excitation of the spin-waves. It also appears that this power level is proportional to the magnitude of dc bias magnetic field.

  • For design of seismic isolated system the determination of isolated frequency is very important. In this paper the effects of seismic isolated frequency for cylindrical tank are investigated using the 1940 EL Centre earthquake(NS). From the results of analysis the seismic isolated frequencies significantly depend on input acceleration and displacement components in lower frequency regions. Therefore, the seismic isolated frequency should be determined by consideration of input ground motion characteristics. For the seismic analysis the modified hysteretic hi-linear model of seismic isolators which can consider the yield load variation, shape of hysterisis loop variation and hardening effects of isolators is proposed. The analyses using the proposed model give similar displacement responses but higher maximum acceleration responses than those using the simple hysteretic hi-linear model.

  • This study investigates the feasibility of retrofitting an existing building by connecting the existing building to a new building using connecting dampers. The new building is base-isolated and viscoelastic dampers are assigned as connecting dampers. Scaled models are tested under three different earthquake records using a shaking table. The existing building and the new building are 9 and 8 stories respectively. The existing building model shows more than 3% increase in damping ratio. The maximum dynamic responses and the root mean square responses of the existing building model to earthquakes are substantially reduced by at least 20% and 59% respectively. Further, numerical models are developed by conducting time-history analysis to predict the performance of the proposed seismic mitigation system. The predictions agree well with the test results. Numerical simulations are carried out to optimize the properties of connecting dampers and base isolators. It is demonstrated that more than 50% of the peak responses can be reduced by properly adjusting the properties of connecting dampers and base isolators.

  • The seismic excitation test results of an isolated test structure for artificial time history excitation are summarized for structural modeling of the isolated structure and isolation bearing. Based on the actual dynamic behaviors and the seismic responses of the test model, linear and bilinear models for isolators are suggested. Seismic analyses are performed and compared with those of the seismic tests. The developed bilinear model is well applicable only to large shear strain area of isolators.

  • This paper deals with the damage assessment for isolators of base-isolated building systems considering the torsion-coupling (TC) effect by establishing damage indices. The damage indices can indicate the reduction in lateral stiffness of the isolator story as explicit formulas in terms of modal parameters. In addition, the damage location, expressed in terms of the estimated damage index and eccentricities before and after damage, is also presented. Numerical analysis shows that the proposed algorithms are applicable for general base-isolated multi-story TC buildings. A procedure from the analysis of seismic response to the implementation of damage indices is demonstrated by using a numerical case. A system identification technique is employed to extract modal parameters from seismic responses of a building. Results show that the proposed indices are capable of detecting the occurrence of damage and preliminarily estimating the location of damaged isolator.

  • Numerical studies were carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of competent hysteric isolators for seismic design of bridge. For dynamic analysis, bridges with isolator were simplified to a model with single degree of freedom. The initial stiffness and the yielding forces of hysteric isolators were varied. Seismic responses obtained by time history analysis show that about 4% of the weight acting as the inertia force is appropriate for the yielding force of isolator. And also better results could be achieved with the values about two times the weight per unit displacement for the initial stiffness of isolator.
