  • We have confirmed the phototoxicity of orange flower absolute, studied the phototoxic ingredient and developed a method to eliminate it. To confirm the phototoxicity, we tested French orange flower absolute, Moroccan absolute and Egyptian absolute with Hartley strain guinea Pig under UV irradiation ranging from 320400 nm supplied with fluorescent lamps. Using a combination of isolation techniques including HPLC and IR, we were able to confirm that the phototoxic agent was bergapten. The development of a non-phototoxic orange flower absolute using ion exchange chromatography is described.

  • The extract from the bulbs of Pancratium maritimum L. afforded 12 alkaloids belonging to the skeletally six different groups of the Amaryllidaceae alkaloids. In this paper, the isolation and identification of (-)-N-demethyl-galanthamine (1), (+)-tazettine (2) and (-)-2-O-demethylmontanine (3) are described. Their structures have been determined by using extensive spectroscopic techniques. This is the first report describing the occurrence of 1 and 3 in this plant.

  • An active Fault Tolerant Model Predictive Control (FTMPC) using Fuzzy scheduler is developed. Fault tolerant Control (FTC) system stages are broadly classified into two namely Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) and fault accommodation. Basically, the faults are identified by means of state estimation techniques. Then using the decision based approach it is isolated. This is usually performed using soft computing techniques. Fuzzy Decision Making (FDM) system classifies the faults. After identification and classification of the faults, the model is selected by using the information obtained from FDI. Then this model is fed into FTC in the form of MPC scheme by Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy scheduler. The Fault tolerance is performed by switching the appropriate model for each identified faults. Thus by incorporating the fuzzy scheduled based FTC it becomes more efficient. The system will be thereafter able to detect the faults, isolate it and also able to accommodate the faults in the sensors and actuators of the Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) process while the conventional MPC does not have the ability to perform it.

  • To prevent or limit the damage caused by earthquakes on existing buildings, several retrofitting techniques are possible. In this work, an ultra high performance concrete based on sand dune has been formulated for use in the reinforcement of a multifunctional tower in the city of Skikda in Algeria. Tests on the formulated ultra high performance concrete are performed to determine its characteristics. A nonlinear dynamic analysis, based on the "Pushover" method was conducted. The analysis allowed an optimization of the width of reinforced concrete walls used in seismic strengthening. Two types of concrete are studied, the ordinary concrete and the ultra high performance concrete. Both alternatives are compared with the reinforcement with carbon fibers and by base isolation retrofit design.

  • In this paper, simple but very effective techniques to suppress subthreshold hump effect for high-voltage (HV) complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology are presented. Two methods are proposed to suppress subthreshold hump effect using a simple layout modification approach. First, the uniform gate oxide method is based on the concept of an H-shaped gate layout design. Second, the gate work function control method is accomplished by local ion implantation. For our experiments, $0.18{\mu}m$ 20 V class HV CMOS technology is applied for HV MOSFETs fabrication. From the measurements, both proposed methods are very effective for elimination of the inverse narrow width effect (INWE) as well as the subthreshold hump.

  • The design concepts using vibration reduction techniques, or structural control, have been proposed recently to protect infrastructure against earthquakes. The magnetorheological(MR) fluid damper is one of the most promising new devices for structural vibration reduction because of its mechanical simplicity, high dynamic range, low power requirement, large force capacity and robustness. In this study, the seismic performance of MR devices are compared with that of NZ systems as an attempt to provide some data for improving seismic design techniques applied to structures. For nonlinear time domain analysis of a base isolation system, a six-story building model is considered as a numerical example. The ground acceleration data of El Centre 1940, Mexico City 1985 and Kobe 1995 earthquakes are used as seismic excitations. The results show that MR damper systems for outperform NZ systems in wide-ranging seismic excitations with respect to intensity and period characteristics.

  • We describe the immune stimulatory effects of compounds determined by means of activity-monitored extraction and isolation techniques. As a result, 4-carboethoxy-6-methoxy-2-quinolone (1) and 4-carboethoxy-6-hydroxy-2-quinolone (2) were isolated from the ethyl acetate-soluble fraction of the Oryza sativa cv. Heugnambyeo bran, and were determined to exert significant inhibitory effects in macrophage cell line (murine RAW 264.7) and murine splenocytes. The structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence, particularly the results obtained via hetero nuclear multiple-bond connectivity and high-resolution MS spectroscopy. Up to date, compound (1) was isolated as natural sources for the first time.

  • Enrichment techniques led to the isolation of a Pseudomonas sp. strain P2 from municipal waste-contaminated soil sample, which could utilize different isomers of a commercial mixture of 4-nonylphenol when grown in the presence of phenol. The isolate was identified as Pseudomonas sp., based on the morphological, nutritional, and biochemical characteristics and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The ${\beta}$-ketoadipate pathway was found to be involved in the degradation of phenol by Pseudomonas sp. strain P2. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis of the culture media indicated degradation of various major isomers of 4-nonylphenol in the range of 29-50%. However, the selected ion monitoring mode of analysis of biodegraded products of 4-nonylphenol indicated the absence of any aromatic compounds other than those of the isomers of 4-nonylphenol. Moreover, Pseudomonas sp. strain P2 was incapable of utilizing various alkanes individually as sole carbon source, whereas the degradation of 4-nonylphenol was observed only when the test organism was induced with phenol, suggesting that the degradation of 4-nonylphenol was possibly initiated from the phenolic moiety of the molecule, but not from the alkyl side-chain.

  • The seismic isolation system makes a structure isolated from ground motions to protect the structure from seismic events. Seismic isolation techniques have been implemented in full-scale buildings and bridges because of their simplicity, economic effectiveness, inherent stability and reliability. As for the responses of an isolated structure due to seismic events, it is well known that the most uncertain aspects are the seismic loading itself and structural properties. Due to the randomness of earthquakes and uncertainty of structures, seismic response distributions of an isolated structure are needed when evaluating the seismic fragility assessment (or probabilistic seismic safety assessment) of an isolated structure. Seismic response time histories are useful and often essential elements in its design or evaluation stage. Thus, a large number of non-linear dynamic analyses should be performed to evaluate the seismic performance of an isolated structure. However, it is a monumental task to gather the design or evaluation information of the isolated structure from too many seismic analyses, which is impractical. In this paper, a new methodology that can evaluate the seismic fragility assessment of an isolated structure is proposed by using stochastic response database, which is a device that can estimate the seismic response distributions of an isolated structure without any seismic response analyses. The seismic fragility assessment of the isolated nuclear power plant is performed using the proposed methodology. The proposed methodology is able to evaluate the seismic performance of isolated structures effectively and reduce the computational efforts tremendously.
