The association between apolipoprotein E (apoE) gene polymorphism and ischemic cerebrovascular disease (ICVD) has been controversial. These controversies may be due to inaccurate classification of patients and ethnic differences. The aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between apoE gene polymorphism and the development of ICVD in a population from Korea. We investigated 136 patients with ICVD and 357 controls without ICVD. No differences in the apoE genotypes frequencies ($X^{2}$ = 3.660, df = 5, P = 0.454) and even in the alleles frequencies ($X^{2}$ = 1.946, df = 2, P = 0.378) were observed in the ICVD patients compared with that in controls. The data have been compared with data found in other population groups. However, the risk of ICVD associated with apoE ${\varepsilon}3/{\varepsilon}4$ genotype was increased nearly 3-fold in subjects possessing the history of diabetes mellitus (OR 3.3, 95% CI 1.2-9.4, P = 0.026). We concluded that the apoE polymorphism is not associated with ICVD at least in the Korean population, but the apoE frequencies found in this study differ significantly from those obtained in Japanese.
This study was designed to determine the outcomes of the team-based cardiac rehabilitation programs for patients with Ischemic Heart Disease(IHD) on their level of health behavior performance, anxiety, and quality of life. A total of 19 in-patients with IHD who have had PTCA treatment at G.Hospital in Inchon were selected as subject to data collection from 1 May 1998 to 30 Oct. 1998. The experimental group, consisting of 11 patients participated in the Hospital's cardiac rehabilitation program was compared with the non-rehabilitation control group of 8 patients. The experimental group has been trained on the cardiac rehabliltation programfor 120-150minute during hospitalization by a team consisted of four specialists, those are cardiologist, head nurse, dietian, and the author. Also individual follow-up training and interview were performed for the members of experimental group at their every visit to the Hospital after discharge. For all subjects, scores on health behavior performance, anxiety, and quality of life were collected two days and 12 weeks after PTCA treatment by questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed with the SPSS. The results of this study were summarized as follows : 1) The experimental group shows significant increase in health behavior performance score compared to the control group(-2.27, p=.022). 2) There was no significant difference between two group's anxiety scores (-.24, p= .803) and quality of life scores(-1.86, p= .061). 3) The correlation between health behavior performance and anxiety ( .07, p= .771), and that between health behavior performance and quality of life( .12, p= .621) respectively were not significant statistically. But the correlation between anxiety and quality of life were significant reversely ( .49, p= .032).
This study attempted to analyze the trend of studies related to IHD(Ischemic Heart Disease). This article reviewed 102 researches on IHD conducted from 1980 to 2003, by examining them according to their characteristics, such as sources by publication period, research design, nursing intervention, outcome of experimental research, and theme of qualitative research. The results were as follows : 1. The number of studies related to IHD has steadily increased year by year since 1985, and that of the articles was the highest during the post-2000 period. Especially, the majority of researches has published since 1995. 2. The 69 studies were degree of all 102 studies related to IHD, and the majority of articles' authors belonged to graduate school. Thirty three studies were non-degree articles. As for study design, the number of quantitative studies were 99 and that of qualitative studies were 3. Non-experimental research design were largely survey and correlational study. 3. Non-experimental study makes up a high proportion of the quantitative study. The most of experimental studies were accomplished after 2000. The main subjects were patients, chart records and general subjects. The majority number of subjects was like this : while the number of non-experimental study was between 51 and 100, that of experimental study was below 50. The number of subject of qualitative study is like this : the number of phenomenology study was 21 and 11, and that of case study is 14. 4. Nursing interventions used in the experimental study comprised teaching program, cardiac rehabilitation program, massage, relaxation, music therapy and providing of sense information. And the most nursing intervention effects included physiological effect, increased self-efficacy, relieved pain and increased quality of life. Most studies proved to have the affirmative effects. 5. The number of qualitative studies related to IHD is like this : the number of degree articles was 2 and that of non-degree articles was 1. Its themes included resources of hope, the experience of coronary artery angiography and the experience of admission at ICU(Intensive Care Unit).
Various stem cells or progenitor cells are being used to treat cardiovascular disease in ischemic heart disease, stem ceil therapy is expected to regenerate damaged myocardium. To evaluate effects of stem cell treatment, the method to image stem cell location, distribution and differentiation is necessary. Optical imaging, MRI, nuclear imaging methods have been used for tracking stem cells. The methods and proglems of each imaging technique are reviewed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors of hospital arrival delays of acute ischemic stroke patients. The study subjects were 126 cerebral infarction patients G Metropolitan City university hospital emergency center. General characteristics, disease-related characteristics and stroke-related were collected by self-reported questionnaires. Hospital arrival times by subjects' characteristics were tested by $x^2$ test and logistic regression analysis. Of 126 cerebral infarction patients, Their average hours taken to move to a hospital was 12.7 hours with the fastest case being 0.5 hour and the most delayed case being 127.8 hours. 61.1%(77 persons) of the stroke patients under this experiment said to have taken 3 hours or less. In logistic regression analyses, Coming to the hospital directly without passing through other hospitals was found to have higher probability of arriving less than 3 hours(${\beta}$=2.960, p=.009), And if LAPSS was tested positive, such cases are more likely to arrive within 3 hours(${\beta}$=2.219, p=.049). For acute ischemic stroke and caregivers need training to be conducted promptly admitted to hospitals for education and treatment hospital stroke screening will help to improve the treatment of stroke patients
We have recently reported the development of a high efficiency expression vector, pCK, which can drive a high level of gene expression in mouse skeletal muscle. In this study, we tested the therapeutic potential of pCK expressing human VEGF165, pCK-VEGF in the rabbit ischemic hind limb model. To determine the optimal dose of plasmid DNA, various concentrations of pCK-CAT were injected into the muscle of a rabbit hind limb and the levels of CAT activity were determined. It was found that the expression level of the exogenously added gene became stable between 250 and 1,000 $\mu$g. Based on this result, we tested whether intramuscular transfer of 500$\mu$g of pCK-VEGF could actually modulate collateral vessel development in a rabbit ischemic hind limb model. It was found that relative to the control group injected with the pCK lacking the VEGF sequence, single intramuscular doses (500$\mu$g) of pCK-VEGF produced statistically significant augmentation of collateral vessels as determined by the angiographic vessel count, maximal blood flow by Doppler flowmeter and the number of capillaries by histology. These results suggest that a single 500$\mu$g-delivery of pCK-VEGF is potent enough to induce sufficient angiogenic activity and achieve therapeutic benefit on this rabbit model.

Ischemic stroke caused by the cerebral vasculopathy is a rare complication of polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy, and skin changes (POEMS) syndrome. We present a case of recurrent ischemic strokes caused by cerebral vasculopathy in a patient with POEMS syndrome. A 34-year-old man presented with gait disturbance and dizziness. Brain magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated acute ischemic stroke in the middle cerebral artery-anterior cerebral artery (MCA-ACA) border zones of bilateral hemispheres. Repeated angiographic studies showed progressive worsening of the left distal internal carotid artery, ACA, and MCA stenoses, along with sustained steno-occlusion of right MCA.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the seasonal variation in stroke types, ischemic stroke subtypes, stroke risk factors and Sasang constitutions. Methods: 226 patients with acute stroke within 14 days onset were included, who were admitted to Kyunghee Oriental Medical Center from November 2005 to October 2006. The year was subdivided into four parts: spring (March-May); summer (June-August); fall (September-November); and winter (December-February). Stroke types, ischemic stroke subtypes, stroke risk factors and Sasang constitutions in the four groups were examined. Results: Ischemic stroke was most frequent in summer, whereas hemorrhagic stroke was most frequent in winter. There was no significant difference in seasonal variation of stroke. The frequency of ischemic heart disease among stroke risk factors was significantly high in spring (p=0.031). The frequency of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, atrial fibrillation, and hyperlipidemia did not differ among seasons. There was no significant difference in Sasang constitution among seasons. Frequency of small vessel occlusion was highest in summer. Large artery atherosclerosis was frequent in spring and summer, but seasonal variation of ischemic stroke subtypes did not show statistical difference. Conclusion: Acute stroke demonstrates seasonal characteristics according to stroke types, ischemic stroke subtypes, risk factors for stroke, and Sasang constitutions. These results have important clinical implications in stroke prevention.
