1D contaminant transport using element free Galerkin method with irregular nodes

  • The present study deals with the numerical modelling for the one dimensional contaminant transport through saturated homogeneous and stratified porous media using meshfree method. A numerical algorithm based on element free Galerkin method is developed. A one dimensional form of the advectivediffusive transport equation for homogeneous and stratified soil is considered for the analysis using irregular nodes. A Fortran program is developed to obtain numerical solution and the results are validated with the available results in the literature. A detailed parametric study is conducted to examine the effect of certain key parameters. Effect of change of dispersion, velocity, porosity, distribution coefficient and thickness of layer is studied on the concentration of the contaminant.

Variable-node axisymmetric solid element and its application to adaptive mesh refinement

  • This paper presents an effective application of a variable-node axisymmetric solid element designated as AQV (Axisymmetric Quadrilateral Variable-node element). The variable-node element with physical midside nodes helps to overcome some problems in connecting the different layer patterns on a quadrilateral mesh in the adaptive h-refinement. This element alleviates the necessity of imposing displacement constraints on irregular (hanging) nodes in order to enforce the inter-element compatibility. Therefore, the elements with variable mid-side nodes can be used effectively in the local mesh refinement for the axisymmetric structures which have stress concentrations. A modified Gaussian quadrature should be adopted to evaluate the stiffness matrices of the variable-node elements mainly because of the slope discontinuity of assumed displacement within the elements. Some numerical examples show the usefulness of variable-node axisymmetric elements in the practical application.

Variable-node element families for mesh connection and adaptive mesh computation

  • Variable-node finite element families, termed (4 + k + l + m + n)-node elements with an arbitrary number of nodes (k, l, m, and n) on each of their edges, are developed based on the generic point interpolation with special bases having slope discontinuities in two-dimensional domains. They retain the linear interpolation between any two neighboring nodes, and passes the standard patch test when subdomain-wise $2{\times}2$ Gauss integration is employed. Their shape functions are automatically generated on the master domain of elements although a certain number of nodes are inserted on their edges. The elements can provide a flexibility to resolve nonmatching mesh problems like mesh connection and adaptive mesh refinement. In the case of adaptive mesh refinement problem, so-called "1-irregular node rule" working as a constraint in performing mesh adaptation is relaxed by adopting the variable-node elements. Through several examples, we show the performance of the variable-node finite elements in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

스위치 기반의 비정규적 네트워크에서의 차별적인 다중 전송 (Differential Multicast in Switch-Based Irregular Topology Network)

  • 워크스테이션들의 네트워크(NOWs)와 같은 스위치 기반의 비정규적 네트워크는 고속 스위치를 이용하여 프로세서 노드나 네트워크 호스트들을 특정 위상에 구애받지 않고 연결한 것으로 우수한 유연성(flexibility)과 확장성(scalability)의 장점이 있다. 그러나 메쉬와 같은 정규적인 위상에 비해 교착 상태(deadlock)에 빠지지 않는 효율적인 다중 전송을 수행하는 것은 용이하지 않다. 본 논문에서는 전송 트리의 루트 노드에 무리를 주지 않고 할당받은 서비스에 따라서 전송 단계와 적응성에 차별성을 부여하며 스위치의 채널 사용의 불균형을 개선하고 네트워크 부하 분포의 조정이 가능한 단일 단계 차별적 다중 전송(Single Phase Differential Multicast; SPDM) 기법을 제안한다.

  • A variable-node-flat shell element designated as CLS which has variable mid-side nodes with drilling freedom has been presented in this paper. The shell element to be applied in finite element analysis has been developed by combining a membrane element named as CLM with drilling rotation d.o.f. and plate bending element. The combined shell element possess six degrees of freedom per node. By introducing the variable-node elements which have physical midside nodes, some difficulties associated with imposing displacement constraints on irregular nodes to enforce interelement compatibility in common adaptive h-refinement on quadrilateral mesh are easily overcome. Detailed numerical studies show the excellent performance of the new shell elements developed in this study.

  • 3D printing has the unique advantage of the ability to customize freeform product even in small quantity. However, we need to select and apply the only necessary parts of it because of the high cost of the manufacturing technology. It is of critical importance in irregular-shaped curtain walls to ensure precision of construction as well as quality fo finish. Complex shape that have structural members at varying angles can have nodes of different shapes making it unfeasible to construct using a general node connection detail. Therefore, this study aims to utilize smart node system using 3D printing as a solution to complex irregular-shaped curtain wall design.

포도 왜성대목 '5BB'의 생물반응기 배양에서 접종밀도가 식물체 생장, 기공 및 광합성 특성에 미치는 영향 (Plant let growth, leaf stomata, and photosynthesis of grape rootstock '5BB' as affected by inoculum density in bioreactor cultures)

  • In bioreactor cultures of plants, inoculum density is an important factor affecting growth and proliferation of the plantlets. To maximize shoot growth and proliferation of grape rootstock '5BB' in bioreactors, inoculum density varied at 15, 30, 45 and 60 single nodes in a 3-liter scale balloon type bioreactor, respectively and cultured for 40 days. Results suggested that the growth and the photosynthesis of the plantlet were greatly affected by inoculum density in the bioreactor. The inoculum density of 45 nodes resulted in the greatest growth (910.4 mg/shoot FW, 764.4 mg/root FW) followed by 30 nodes. $CO_2$ assimilation rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate of the plantlet were also highest at the inoculum density of 45 nodes. Significant reduces in shoot and root growth (426.5 mg/shoot FW, 248.4 mg/root FW) were observed at the inoculum density of 60 nodes. When the inoculum density decreased by 15 nodes, plantlets were malformed due to hyperhydricity, resulting in the highest transpiration rate and the lowest $CO_2$ assimilation rate. The plantlets stressed by the inoculum density at 15 nodes and 60 nodes showed larger number and irregular shape of stomata compared to the plantlets inoculated with 45 nodes.

LDPC 부호 적용을 위한 Tanner의 최소 거리 바운드의 일반화 (Generalization of Tanner′s Minimum Distance Bounds for LDPC Codes)

  • LDPC 부호의 검사행렬은 비트노드와 검사노드간의 이분 그래프로 표현된다. Tanner는 그래프상의 인접 행렬 (adjacency matrix) 고유값을 이용하여, 균일 LDPC 부호의 최소 거리 하한식(minimum 야stance bound)을 유도하였다. 본 논문에서는 Tanner의 결과를 일반화하여, 균일 및 블록 구조를 갖는 비균일 LDPC부호에 적용 가능한 두개의 최소 거리 하한식을 유도한다. 첫 번째는 최소 거리 부호어에 인접한 비트노드들의 관계를 통하여 유도되는 비트노드 기반 하한식이고, 두 번째는 최소 거리 부호어와 연접한 검사노드들의 관계에서 얻어지는 검사노드기반 하한식이다. 론 논문에서 유도한 하한식을 통하여 블록 구조를 갖는 비균일 LDPC부호의 거리 특성을 그래프의 고유값들과의 관계로 나타낼 수 있다.

Packet Traffic Management in Wearable Health Shirt by Irregular Activity Analysis on Sensor Node

  • This paper describes the packet traffic management of the Ubiquitous Healthcare System. In this system, ECG signal and accelerometer signal is transmitted from a wearable health shirt (WHS) to the base station. However, with the increment of users in this system, traffic over-load issue occurs. The main aim of this paper is to reduce the traffic over-load issue between sensor nodes by only transmitting the required signals to the base station when irregular activities are observed. In order to achieve this, in-network processing is adapted where the process of observation is conducted inside the sensor node of WHS. Results shows that irregular activities such as fall can be detected on real-time inside the sensor node and thus resolves traffic over-load issue.

An Adaptive Mesh-Independent Numerical Integration for Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin Method

  • In this paper, an adaptive numerical integration scheme, which does not need non-overlapping and contiguous integration meshes, is proposed for the MLPG (Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin) method. In the proposed algorithm, the integration points are located between the neighboring nodes to properly consider the irregular nodal distribution, and the nodal points are also included as integration points. For numerical integration without well-defined meshes, the Shepard shape function is adopted to approximate the integrand in the local symmetric weak form, by the values of the integrand at the integration points. This procedure makes it possible to integrate the local symmetric weak form without any integration meshes (non-overlapping and contiguous integration domains). The convergence tests are performed, to investigate the present scheme and several numerical examples are analyzed by using the proposed scheme.
