Corrosion Prediction of Metallic Cultural Heritage Assets by EIS

  • Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) was used to predict corrosion behaviour of metallic Cultural Heritage assets in two monitoring campaigns: 1) an iron bar chain exposed indoor from over 500 years in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Amiens (France); and 2) a large weathering steel sculpture exposed outdoor from tens of years in Ferrara (Italy). The EIS portable instrument employed was battery operated. In situ EIS measurements on the iron chain could be used to investigate the phenomena involved in the electrochemical interfaces among various corrosion products and assess and predict their corrosion behaviour in different areas of the Cathedral. Meanwhile, the sculpture of weathering steel, like most outdoor artefacts, showed rust layers of different chemical composition and colour depending on the orientation of metal plates. The EIS monitoring campaign was carried out on different areas of the artefact surface, allowing assessment of their protective effectiveness. Results of EIS measurements evidenced how employing a simple test that could be performed in situ without damaging the artefacts surface is possible to quickly gain knowledge of the conservation state of an artefact and highlight potential danger conditions.

사각관을 이용한 태양열집열기의 성능에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Performance of Flat-Plate Solar Collector with Rectangular Channels)

  • For the cost reduction of a flat-plate solar collector, a new galvanized iron collectro plate replaced the convenctional copper or alnminum collector plates and the flow channel was also modified to a rectangular channel for a better heat transfer performance. A simple analytical model was developed and agreed well with the experimental results. The results show better thermal performance for a rectangular channel than for a conventional circular channel.

  • Racetrack coils are used in many areas of superconductivity applications such as generators, motors, maglev, wiggler magnets and so on. The fabrication and characteristics of race-track type High Tc Superconducting (HTS) magnets were carried out. The Magnet is composed of 3 pancake coils wound by 37-filamental Bi-2223/ Ag-alloy tapes. Quench current ($I_q$) of both whole magnet and 3 pancake coils were measured. At 77K under the self-field, $I_q$ of magnet was 12A, while in the case of middle pancake coil, $I_q$ was 15A. The upper pancake coils of racetrack magnet with iron plates, magnet having optimized current distribution and initial magnet are compared with each other through 3D FEA, manufacturing and testing these magnets. The measured performance of the upper pancake coil #3 with iron plates improved by 50% on the basis of initial pancake coil #3. Quench current ($I_q$) of field winding was 12A. In addition, the fabrication processes and the characteristics of HTS magnet are described.

다양한 조건에 따른 주철 소재의 마찰/마모 특성에 관한 연구 (Investigation of Friction and Wear Characteristics of Cast Iron Material Under Various Conditions)

  • 주철은 산업현장에서 중장비나 철도차량 등과 같은 다양한 기계장치의 주재료로 널리 사용된다. 이러한 기계장치의 운전 성능은 접촉 특성에 따라 크게 좌우되며 이를 개선시키기 위한 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 모래와 알루미나 입자가 주철의 마찰/마모 특성에 미치는 영향에 대해 다양한 조건에서의 미끄럼 실험을 통해 규명하였다. 입자의 크기 및 시편 온도 등을 변수로 하여 스틸 볼이 pin 으로 장착된 pin-on-reciprocator 방식의 트라이보테스터를 사용하여 실험을 진행하였다. 주사전자현미경(Scanning Electron Microscope), confocal microscope 와 3d profiler 를 이용해서 주철 시편과 스틸 볼의 마모 표면을 관찰하고 마모량을 정량적으로 측정하여 마모 특성을 파악하였다. 실험 결과 주철의 마찰/마모 특성은 입자 주입에 의해 크게 달라짐을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 주철 시편에 가해준 온도에 따라 마찰/마모 특성이 크게 달라지는 것을 확인하였다. 이 연구의 결과는 산업에서 주철 재료의 트라이볼로지 특성을 이해하는데 도움이 될 것이다.

디지털 CR시스템에서 Image plate의 화질 평가 (Evaluating Picture Quality of Image Plates in Digital CR Systems)

  • CR(computed radiography)시스템의 영상획득 과정에서 영상판의 외부 방사선 영향을 효과적으로 보완하고 임상적용시 효율적 활용을 목적으로 본 연구를 실시하였다. 이를 위하여 영상판의 보관 장소와 기간으로 분류하여 미소한 흑점 차이를 비교 분석하고 영상의 경계면에서 농도 분포를 평가하였다. 영상판의 보관 장소에 따른 명실과 암실에서 흑점수를 비교 측정한 결과, 명실에 보관한 영상판에서 1일과 2일에서 미약하게 흑점 수가 증가하였으며, 4일, 6일, 8일, 10일로 보관 기간이 길어질수록 비례하여 증가하였다. 하지만 암실 보관의 경우 명실과 비교시 흑점 수가 현저하게 줄어들었다. 영상판의 위치에 따른 화질의 변화에서는 가장자리 보다 중앙에 관심영역을 위치시키는 것이 화질의 손상을 줄일 수 있었다. 피사체의 두께 변화에 따른 선예도 차이는 가능한 피사체 두께를 작게 하는 것이 산란선 발생을 줄이고 선예도를 향상시키는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 우수한 화질의 의료영상을 얻기 위해서는 영상판의 효율적 정도 관리가 필요하며 영상판을 암박스에 보관하여 외부 방사선에 장시간 방치하지 않도록 하는 것이 바람직하다.

Pyro-synthesis of Na2FeP2O7 Nano-plates as Cathode for Sodium-ion Batteries with Long Cycle Stability

  • Carbon-coated sodium iron pyrophosphate ($Na_2FeP_2O_7$) was prepared by a simple and low-cost pyro-synthesis route for further use as the cathode for Na-ion batteries. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the sample annealed at $650^{\circ}C$ confirmed the pure triclinic phase of $Na_2FeP_2O_7$. Electron microscopy studies revealed a cross linked plate shape morphology of the $Na_2FeP_2O_7$ sample. When tested for application in Na-ion battery, the $Na_2FeP_2O_7$ cathode showed two redox pairs in the potential window of 2.0-4.0 V. The cathode registered initial discharge and charge capacities of 80.85 and 90 mAh/g, respectively, with good cycling performance.

용융안연 도금욕의 Ni첨가가 도금강판의 게면반응 및 내식성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Ni Addition Interfacial Reaction and Corrosion Resistance in Hot Dip Galvanizing)

  • The iron-zinc interfacial reaction and corrosin properties in galvanizing bath containning Ni have been intestigated. The substrate steel plates were galvanized in Zn or Zn-0.018Al baths with various Ni contents. The corrosion resistance of galvanized specimens was also evaluated by $60^{\circ}$bending test for galvannealing speaaimens. The corrosion resistance was improved with Ni addition in pure Zn bath, while deteriorated with Ni addition in Zn-0.18Al bath. The anti-powdering property, on thhe otherhand, was improved with Ni addition in Zn-0.18Al bath, while deteriorated with Ni addition in pure Zn. It was found that the anti-powdering property was improved with increasing $\xi$ phase ratio in reaction layer.

Ferrite-Resin 복합재료의 방진 특성에 관한 연구 (Characteristics of Ferrite-Resin Material for Improving Vibration-proof Property)

  • The vibration-proof material normally used in structural components of precision machinery or measuring instruments requires higher damping in vibration and better characteristics in dimensional stability and rigidity to accomplish the quality assurance of the products. In this study the ferrite-resin material, which is the mixture of epoxy resin and the oxidized steel (Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$: ferrite) in consideration of characteristics of aggregator and binder, is developed and investigated as one of vibration-proof materials. Four kinds of composite plates for experiments are made by adding another filler materials such as steel powder, granite powder and carbon-fiber sheet to the basic ferrite-resin matrix. Their characteristics are compared with a cast iron specimen which has the same bending rigidity as other specimens. The ferrite-resin material gives the best damping effect in the motor-induced vibration test. Therefore, the material can be applied to the manufacturing industry for vibration damping of machine elements.

저품위 동광석의 세균침출에 관한 연구 5 (A Study on Bacterial Leaching of Low-Grade Copper Mineral(V))

  • It was convinced that with a relatively small capital investment and with a low operating cost, appreciable amounts of cement copper could be produced from low-grade minerals by the application of a bacterial leaching method. For the recovery of cement copper from the impure pregnant solution, direct precipitation of copper with tin plates by a bacterial leaching method was feasible. The results obtained were as follows: 1)In order to remove the cement copper from the reducing metal, aeration and agitation method were more effective and economic than shaking method. 2)The rate of copper recovery from the pregnant solution was accerelated according to increasing quantities of reducing metal. However, the excess of reducing metal reduced the grade of cement copper. 3)Among the comparative experiments of copper recovery at each reaction temperature of $10^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$, the recovery rate of copper at $30^{\circ}C$from the pregnant solution was highest. 4)Direct cementation method on iron-containing metal was an excellent method for the recovery of cement copper in bacterial leaching.

熔融알루미늄 鍍金한 鋼板의 機械的 性質에 關한 硏究 (A Study on Mechanical properties of Aluminized Steel Plate)

  • The mechanical properties of aluminized steel were investigated after the JIS SB 41 plates were dipped in molten aluminum bath. (1) The growth rate of iron-aluminum alloy layer was fast in early stage of alumizing, and then gradually decreased with increasing time. However, over the time period above 10 minutes the growth of alloy layer did not occur. (2) The constituent of alloy layer formed on the steel surface was identified to be intermetallic compound of $Fe_2\;Al_5$. (3) The ultimate tensile strength and elongation of aluminized steel showed a nearly constant value over all thickness below about 0.15 mm. However, both properties decreased rapidly in showed a nearly constant value over all thickness above about 0.20 mm. (4) In case of aluminized steel with greater thickness, crack was formed below yield point of base metal, which is considered to be attributed to the alloy layer failure.
