Characterization of Planar Optical Waveguides by Ag$^{+}$ -Na$^{+}$ Ion Exchange in BK7 Glass (Ag$^{+}$ -Na$^{+}$이온교환법을 이용한 BK7 유리 평판형 광도파로의 특성)

  • Planar graded index optical waveguides have been formed by Ag$^{+}$ ion exchange in the BK7 optical glass. The experimental results of diffusion and modal characteristics of Ag$^{+}$-Na$^{+}$ exchanged BK7 glass waveguides are presented. Measurements of the mode indices have been measured. We found the relations between the process and device parameters such as the diffusion depth and the square root of the diffusion time, diffusion coefficient and diffusion temperature, and diffusion ion concentration and surface index change. A theoretical gaussian function refractive index profile matched best with the measured data for all the guided modes. The empirical relations between the process and the device parameters are derived and subsequently used to formulate a systematic procedure for fabricating singlemode and multimode waveguides.uides.

Effect of SLS Glass for Bulletproof Materials by Ion Exchange Technique (방탄소재 활용을 위한 SLS 유리의 이온교환 효과)

  • There are a number of studies on chemically strengthened glass. Most of them are strengthened in molten salt bath below transformation range of glass. This research is distinguished from the aforementioned studies in that single $KNO_3$ powder was used by employing screen printing technique. In this study soda-lime-silicate(SLS) glasses for bulletproof glass application with various thicknesses were used. The maximum value of the bending strength is 791MPa heat treated at $480^{\circ}C$, which is about 4.3 times higher than the parent glass, which is the highest strength of all soda-lime glasses. In this study, it is also observed that Vickers hardness increased to $657H_v$, which is about 15% higher than the parent glass($568.7H_v$) and fracture toughness was not changed. Depth profiles measured by electron probe micro analyzer(EPMA) showed a correlation between the migrations of $K^+$ ions with bending strength of ion exchanged glasses.

  • The behavior of mechanical properties of ion exchanged glasses was investigated in this study. The used glasses were soda-lime-silica glasses that were produced by float process. The maximum values of the bending strength and the curvature depth are 45Kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ and 8.6mm respectively treated at 45$0^{\circ}C$ for 6h, which are 4.4 times and 3.3 times higher than parent glass. In the case, the thermalshock resistance ΔT is 335$^{\circ}C$ that is 205$^{\circ}C$ higher than parent glass, which is the maximum values in this study. The maximum values of the surface microhardness is 490Kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ in case of 43$0^{\circ}C$ for 4h. It is also found out that annealing points are increased linearly with increasing the amount of K+ ion exchange independent of treatment temperature. Furthermore, the present work shows that the ion exchange strengthened glasses are more effective than the physical tempering glasses ; the bending strength and the curvature depth are 1.8 times and twice higher respectively.

  • 이온교환방법은 착색된 유리를 생산하기 위하여 수세기 전부터 연구되어 왔다. 1972년 Izawa와 Nagome가 silicate 유리에 Tl$^{+}$이온을 치환하여 평판 도파로를 만든 후, 이온교환은 도파로나 마이크로 렌즈제작 등에 활발하게 연구되어 왔다. 유리 도파로는 광의 진행손실이 적으며, 광섬유와의 우수한 호환성, 그리고, 제작이 용이하고 가격이 싼 장점 등으로 인하여 많은 연구가 진행되고 있는 재료이다. 그러나, 유리에 이온교환으로 광소자를 만들기 위해서는 굴절률변화를 정확하게 예측해야한다. 따라서, 유리에서 이온들의 확산특성을 정확하게 분석하고 실험적으로 확립하는 연구는 매우 중요하다고 하겠다.   • An erbium-ytterbium co-doped phosphate glass waveguide amplifier, fabricated by two-step ion-exchange, is presented. The performance of the amplifiers are investigated in viewpoints of net gain, pump power, and noise figure. The waveguide has propagation loss of 0.7 dB/cm Including insertion loss at 1.304 $\mu\textrm{m}$. At a signal wavelength of 1.534 $\mu\textrm{m}$, a high net gain of 12.8 dB and low noise figure of less than 3.9 dB are archived in a 4 cm long waveguide when injected by 140 ㎽ of LD pump at 0.98$\mu\textrm{m}$ in single pass configuration.

  • Coloring effect, mechanical properties resulting from silver ions exchange of glasses immersed into the mixed molten salt of KNO3 and AgNO3 were investigated in this study. Ion exchange coloring of glasses made it possible to obtain glasses with a range from yellow to yellowish-brown, and spectral transmittance was investigated. The amount of ion exchange and peneration depth increased with treatment temperature and time. The activation energy decreased with mole fraction of AgNO3. It can be seem that the bending strength of ion exchanged glasses were 3~4 times higher than the parent glass and Ag+ colloids prevented from increasing surface microhardness.

  • In this paper, we have modeled and fabricated a mutimode interference (MMI) $1\times4$ optical power splitter using finite-difference beam propagation method and $Ag^+-Na^+$ ion-exchanged method in BK7 glass. The power splitting ratio of the fabricated MMI $1\times4$ optical power splitter shows 0.46 dB..46 dB.

  • A $1.31/1.55\mu\textrm{m}$ coarse WDM opncal dIrectional coupler that conslsls of two idenlical straight channel waveguides in BK7 glass has been fabricated. The separatIOn between two channel waveguides is $8\mu\textrm{m}$ and the wavegu.ide width is $4\mu\textrm{m}$ . Especlally, we assumed that the index profile is Gaussian function and complementary error function in the width direction and depth direction, respectrvely. This directional coupler operating at $1.31/1.55\mu\textrm{m}$ with crosstalk of 18dB is demonstrated and has the 16 mm long length with 12.6 mm coupling region.region.
