Titanium Acetylacetonate as an Excellent Ion-Carrier in Construction of Iodide Sensor

  • Titanium acetylacetonate was used in the construction of a PVC-based membrane electrode. This sensor shows very good selectivity for iodide ion over a wide variety of common inorganic and organic anions. It exhibits Nernstian behavior with a slope of 59.1 mV per decade. The working concentration ranges of the sensor are with a detection limit of $3.0\;{\times}\;10^{-6}\;M$. The response time of the sensor is very fast (<8 s), and can be used for at least twelve weeks in the pH range of 4.0-9.2. The best performance was obtained with a membrane composition of 30% PVC, 65% dibutylphthalate, 3% titanium acetylacetonate and 2% hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide. The proposed sensor was successfully applied as an indicator electrode for titration of iodide with silver ion.

  • A system to monitor the ion mass and charge-state as well as plasma potential value during plasma source ion implantation (PSII) has been developed. It was tested with 30-kV PI3D setup using alternatively hot cathode do (HC) and inductively coupled RF (ICP) discharge sources. The design and performance of the system will be described, and experimental results in nitrogen and argon plasmas produced by modular HC-ICP source will be discussed.

  • The correlation between electrical conduction and dielectric relaxation properties of copper ion conducting glasses is discussed. The glasses were prepared in the system $CuI-Cu_2S-Cu_2O-MoO_3$ using rapid quenching technique. These glasses have high ionic conductivities at room temperature in the range of $10^{\circ}$[S/m], and the conductivities increase with increasing CuI content. The activation energies for conduction are 0.26 - 0.57 eV. The dielectric relaxation times are 1 - 10uS, and the activation energy for ion jumping are 0.18 - 0.41eV. It is shown that the tendency of conduction properties depending on composition of the glass is similar those of dilectric relaxation.

  • Complex, ill-defined mixtures of natural origin are often used as nutrients in the production of biological products through microbial fermentation. Product yields are affected by variation in these natural products. Yeast extract is a typical example of these natural products. Since it is a mixture of amino acids, peptides and nucleic acids, its composition is not well characterized. In this study, we investigated the properties of thiamine hydrochloride, riboflavin and pyridoxine hydrochlride in yeast extract by using a gel filtration chromatography, ion exchange chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. Yeast extract solution was fractionated by gel filtration chromatography and ion exchange chromatography, and then, each fraction was analyzed by using a high performance liquid chromatography.

Ni added Si-Al Alloys with Enhanced Li+ Storage Performance for Lithium-Ion Batteries

  • Here, we report on nanocrystalline Si-Al-M (M = Fe, Cu, Ni, Zr) alloys for use as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, which were fabricated via a melt-spinning method. Based on the XRD and TEM analyses, it was found that the Si-Al-M alloys consist of nanocrystalline Si grains surrounded by an amorphous matrix phase. Among the Si-Al-M alloys with different metal composition, Ni-incorporated Si-Al-M alloy electrode retained the high discharge capacity of 2492 mAh/g and exhibited improved cyclability. The superior $Li^+$ storage performance of Si-Al-M alloy with Ni component is mainly responsible for the incorporated Ni, which induces the formation of ductile and conductive inactive matrix with crystalline Al phase, in addition to the grain size reduction of active Si phase.

Determination of Ag(Ⅰ) Ion with a Chemically Modified Carbon Paste Electrode Containing Cinchonidine (Cinchonidine으로 변성된 Carbon Paste 전극을 사용한 은이온의 정량)

  • Electrochemical determination of Ag(I) ion was carried out by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) with the carbon paste electrode (CPE) containing cinchonidine. The detection limit for Ag(I) ion was shown to be $1.0 {\times}10^{-6}$ M in conventional CV and up to $8.0{\times}10^{-9}$ M (${\pm}$0.6%) using DPV. The optimum analytical condition of Ag(I) ion was determined as follows: pH 7, 20 minutes of deposition time, and 50% (w/w) cinchonidine to carbon powder composition of electrode. The interference effect of various metal ions added to the deposition solution was also studied. The peak current of Ag(I) ion except Hg(II) ion was decreased roughly 25% compare to Ag(I) ion only. When Mn(II) ion was present in sample solution at pH 9, shown a large interference effect.

A Study on the Separation of Cesium Cations by Using Electrochemical Ion Exchanger of KNiFe(CN)6 (KNiFe(CN)6 전기화학적 이온교환체를 이용한 세슘 양이온의 분리에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate the separation of cesium cations by using an electrochemical ion exchanger of nickel hexacyanoferrate($KNiFe(CN)_6$) film electrode. Potential, current, and charge passing through the cyclic voltammograms were measured in singular and binary solutions of 1.0M $NaNO_3$ and 1.0M $CsNO_3$. Before and after each experiment, the structural morphology and atomic composition of $KNiFe(CN)_6$ were analyzed by SEM and EDS, respectively. The ion selectivity of $KNiFe(CN)_6$ was also observed by the voltammograms and atomic compositions measured in the solution alternated between sodium and cesium. As the result of this study, it was found that the electrically switched $KNiFe(CN)_6$ ion exchanger had the significant advantage of 40 times or longer durability than conventional organic or inorganic ion exchanger. It was also shown that the $KNiFe(CN)_6$ ion exchanger had high selectivity for cesium over sodium.

  • The Ta$_2$O$_{5}$ thin film was deposited on Si-(III) and glass substrate with the change of Ar:O$_2$ gas flow rate in the assist ion gun by the Dual ion-Beam Sputtering (DIBS). As the $O_2$ gas flow of the assist ion gun was decreased, the deposition rate of the thin films decreased. The refractive index was fixed (2.11, at 1550 nm) without regarding to $O_2$ gas flow of the range 3∼12 sccm in assist ion gun. The condition of Ar:O$_2$=3:12 was formatted stoichiometry composition of Ta$_2$O$_{5}$ and the ms roughness was small (0.183 nm).

  • Ion-selective poly(vinyl chloride) membrane electrodes for the determination of the anticholinergic drug alverine in pure substances is described. Ion-pair complex of alverine with anionic counter ion acid red 97 is investigated as electroactive compound for the electrode membrane. On the optimal composition of membrane, its slope was 55.35mV/decade, relative standard deviation was 0.61 and lower limit of linear range was $1.0{\times}10^{-5}M$. The observed potentiometric selectivity coefficient was -2.625 toward methylephedrine and -2.216 toward histidine. We can got the stable potential at pH 7.0~4.0. Response time was 20~30 seconds for solutions${\leq}10^{-4}M$, about 10 seconds for solutions ${\geq}10^{-4}M$ of these compounds.
