Effects of Roasting Conditions on Quality and Yields of Barley Tea (보리의 볶음조건이 보리차의 품질 및 수율에 미치는 영향)

  • An investigation was carried out to improve the quality and yield of barley tea(water extracts) by modifying the roasting method. The modified methods employed were crushing the barley into 4-10 parts and soaking in water at room temperature for 20 minutes followed by roasting (light brown or dark brown) at $250^{\circ}C$ before boiling with water. The varieties of barley used for this study were Ol-bori(with hulls) and Youngsan-bori(without hulls) and the qualities measured were the physical, chemical and sensory characteristics of roasted barley and its extracts. The results showed that the higher solid yields in barley tea was obtained with an increase in soaking and roasting time. The solid yields increased rapidly with extraction time in boiling water until 30 minutes and then slowed down thereafter. However the intrinsic viscosity of barley tea was reduced by increase in soaking and roasting time. The color of barley tea expressed as Hunter L, a, b values showed that lower L value and higher a and b values were measured for those prepared without soaking and with more extensive roasting. Organoleptic evaluation clearly showed that the sensory quality of barley tea was significantly improved in intensity of odor and taste by crushing, soaking and dark brown roasting.

Accumulation and Depletion of Melamine Through Experimental Feeding in Catfish Silurus asotus (메기(Silurus asotus)에 투여한 멜라민의 체내함량 변화)

  • In 2007, pet food contaminated with melamine caused hundreds of dogs and cats to develop renal failure all over the world. In 2008, over 294,000 infants consumed infant formula and developed kidney stones in China. Further investigation revealed that fish feed also contained melamine; this raised concerns about melamine residues in edible fish tissues, which could have caused the urinary tract stone epidemic. In Korea, catfish fed with assorted feed that included cuttlefish organs that contained melamine developed whitening syndrome and fell dead in some populations in 2008. This event raised suspicions about the toxicity of melamine and all feeds containing melamine were immediately recalled. In this study, we investigated the rates of melamine accumulation and depletion in muscle and viscera of catfish to propose proper withdrawal periods. One group of catfish was fed a commercially available diet that contained 30, 100 and 300 mg melamine per kg diet for 14 days. To investigate residual melamine contents in muscle and viscera, other experimental groups were fed a melamine free diet after being fed melamine for 7 days. The residual amount of melamine was analyzed by LC-MS/MS. The melamine concentration in muscle was estimated to be 3.7 mg/kg after 6 days of feeding with a diet containing 300 mg melamine/kg. After 2 days of culture with a melamine free diet, the residual melamine was depleted and the concentration had decreased from 1.15 mg/kg to 0.19 mg/kg in the muscle of catfish fed a diet containing 300 mg melamine/kg for 7 days. The residual amount of melamine was reduced to 0.03 mg/kg in muscle after 7 days of culture with a melamine free diet and was undetectable after a prolonged culture period of 14 days. Catfish tend to excrete melamine rapidly after oral administration and changes in body color were not observed during the short dosing period.

  • Display quality assessment has been a long standing issue due to the diversity of display devices and the rapid growth of display technology. The conventional display quality assessment methods are mostly those methods which evaluate qualities of a display by measuring physical quantities, but the results from the methods are not equal to the perceived results which are acquired with subjective experiments. Thus, we need to solve the above contrariety as well as establish the quantitative correlation between physical and perceived results. This paper proposes the systematic method of evaluating relative perceived qualities among various display devices and quantifies these relative perceived qualities. The proposed method is based on Analytic Network Process(ANP), which is one of the most popular decision making methods in the business administration field. We also adopted three evaluation criteria, which consist of color, shape and depth, in order to reflect the human visual system and chose eight sub-criteria related to display characteristics via question investigation. We carried out a subjective experiment and the proposed method which evaluated perceived qualities of two display devices(TFT-LCD, OLED) in order to prove the similarity between their results. As a result, it is proved that the order relationship between perceived qualities was the same as the order of results got through the subjective experiment.

  • Phalaenopsis (Phal.) "Yellow Dream" was developed by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA) in 2005. This hybrid came from the progenies of a cross between Phal. "3031" which has yellow colored petals and small plant size, and Phal. "Golden Emperor" which has yellow colored petals with red spots and small plant size in 1995. "Yellow Dream" was finally selected in 2005 after the investigation of the growth and flower characteristics from 2000 to 2004. "Yellow Dream" had a yellow (Y4D) base color and light orange stripe petals (ORN34A) with a red lip (R42D). The average leaf length and flower width of "Yellow Dream" were 21cm and 6.8cm, respectively. It has a half erect leaf form and is a fast growing cultivar. This hybrid is relatively easy to make clones.

Investigation of Liquid Phase Formaldehyde Removal Efficiency by Enzymatic Formaldehyde Dehydrogenase and Catalytic Chemisorption Reactions (탈수소화효소 반응 및 촉매적 흡착 반응에 의한 액상 포름알데하이드의 제거 효율 연구)

  • Formaldehyde is one of the toxic substances without any color and smell. Several methods to remove formaldehyde has been investigated up to now. Here, both the enzymatic and chemisorptive/catalytic liquid phase formaldehyde removal were investigated, and their catalytic activities in terms of specific activities were compared. Firstly, formaldehyde dehydrogenase (FDH) enzyme from Escherichia coli K12 was cloned, and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). And the catalytic activity was characterized as $2.49{\times}10^3sec^{-1}mM^{-1}$ of $k_{cat}/K_m$ with 8.69 U/mg of the specific activity. Secondly, the chemisorptive and oxidative catalytic removals were investigated simultaneously. Activated carbons and zeolites treated with heat, KI, and KOH were used as chemisorption medium. And $Pd/TiO_2$ was used as an oxidative catalyst for the formaldehyde removal. All of the tested chemicals showed similar formaldehyde removal efficiencies of around 50%. However, the specific activity of FDH dependent formaldehyde removal was absolutely higher than that of using chemisorptive and catalytic removal processes with the ranges of 0.01 to 0.26 U/g.

Parturition and Early Growth of Crowned Seahorse, Hippocampus coronatus in Korea (한국산 해마, Hippocampus coronatus의 출산과 초기성장)

  • The recent decrease in wild stocks of seahorse, Hippocampus coronatus, has prompted the production of the species in captivity. We here present data on the body color changes of the species according to culture conditions. This investigation examined relationship between adult body size and clutch and growth in 60 days after parturition and survival of juveniles with four fed enriched Artemia nauplii, copepod nauplii and copepod adult. Seahorse adults ($77.77{\pm}9.84mm$, n=12) collected from Kamak Bay and Yeoja Bay from August 2003 to November 2004 gave a parturition of $6\sim75$ juveniles (Mean, 39 juveniles/male/time) for 14 times. A day old seahorses were $14.48{\pm}1.38mm$ (n=15) in standard length (SL) with 14 dorsal fin rays, 12 pectoral fin rays and 4 anal fin rays. Sixty-day old seahorses were $24.65{\pm}0.83mm$ (n=4) in SL. Growth rate of seahorses was 0.18 mm/day at 24 in 60 days after parturition. When offered Artemia nauplii and copepod nauplii, 5 day old sea-horses preferred copepod nauplii to Aremia nauplii with a maximum predation rate of 31 copepod nauplii/sea-horse/h. However 30-day old seahorses preferred selected Artemia nauplii with a maximum predation rate of 14 Artemia nauplii/seahorse/h. Survival was highest (49%) when offered copepod nauplii together with enriched Artemia nauplii.

An Analysis of 2006-2007 F/W Women's Street Fashion in Dalian, China (2006-2007 F/W 중국 대련시 여성 스트리트 패션 분석)

  • The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the style, color, and items of '06-07 F/W women's street fashion in Dalian. The cultural, racial and geographical uniqueness, asks for the analysis, based on the individual local area on the part of Korean fashion company desiring to launch into China fashion market. I would contribute to the understanding the preference of fashion in northeastern area, thereby, affording a fundamental resources for designing strategies for Korean fashion brands in China. The period of investigation is about 15 weeks from 23 Sep. 2006 until 6 Jan. 2007, with combined use of camcorder and digital camera. The site was Victory Shopping Plaza, in center of City, also with Mycal, Ansung, Dasang department store situated in the Economic Development Zone. Finally, 900 photos were selected for analysing. The result of this study are as follows: 1. Preferred clothing styles are jean casual 45.4%(409), sports casual 16.3%(147), character casual 8%(72), feminine 20.6%(185), Classic 9.7%(87). Compare to the former study about Spring, Sports casual showed dominant rate about 36.0% in casual style. In Winter, however, the preference were changed from sport casual to jean casual. 2. Preferred clothing items are parka/padding coat 32.3%(291), jumper 31%(279), T-shirts 16%(144) and jacket 7.5%(67) for tops, pants 91.8%(826) and skirts 8.2%(74) for bottoms. In the pants, straight pants 78.4%(648), bell bottom pants 10.9%(90), capri pants 7.4%(61), cargo pants 2.9%(24), bermuda pants 0.4%(3) were listed respectively. In the skirts, A-line skirt 51.3%(38), pleats skirt 25.7%(19), flare skirt 12.2%(9), semi-tight skirt 8.1%(6), tight skirt 2.7%(2) were listed. Finally the skirt length midi 75.7%(56), mini 18.9%(14) and maxi 5.4%(4) were listed. 3. Preferred colors are red 21.8%(196), white 21.6%(194), black 16.4%(148), yellow 10.0%(90), beige 9.3%(84), green 7.9(71) and blue 6.3%(57) for tops, and black 40.8%(367), blue 37.7%(339), gray 4.6%(41), white 4.3%(39) etc. for bottoms.

Breeding of Self-compatible Pear "Wonkyo Na-jasoojung 2" (배 자가결실성 "원교 나-자수정 2호")

  • Pear has a gametophytic self-incompatibility (SI) system and its SI reaction is controlled by a single multi-allelic S-locus. 'Wonkyo Na-jasoojung 2' was selected from a cross between 'Wonwhang', early season major pear cultivar with high fruit quality and self-incompatible, and 92-18-79 (${S_4}^{sm}{S_4}^{sm}$) obtained from self cross of 'Osa-nijisseiki' (${S_2S_4}^{sm}$) (SM, stylar-part mutant), self-compatible bud mutant that originated from self-incompatible 'Nijisseiki' ($S_2S_4$) made in 2001 at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration in Korea. '92-18-79' was selected as a self-compatible source through field investigation. It bloomed 1 day earlier than 'Osa-Nijisseiki' and similar to 'Wonwhang' in 2008. It is medium in tree vigor and spreading in tree habit. 'Wonkyo Na-jasoojung 2' is classified as highly susceptible to pear scab (Venturia nashicola) similar to 'Osa-Nijisseiki' and as resistant to black spot (Alternaria kikuchiana) similar to 'Wonwhang'. It had 65.7% fruiting rate by self pollination. The average optimum harvest time of 'Wonkyo Na-jasoojung 2' was 148 days after full bloom and it matured 2 days earlier than 'Osa-Nijisseiki' and 11 days later than 'Wonwhang'. The fruit is roundish oblate in shape and yellowish brown in skin color. Average fruit weight was 445 g and soluble solids content was 13.3 $^{\circ}Brix$. The flesh had abundant juice and negligible grit.

A Development of Career Aptitude Scale for Design Majoring University Students (디자인 진로적성검사의 개발)

  • This study developed 'Design Career Aptitude Scale' to help design majoring college students who are seeking their career goals or conflicting to decide their majors. The subscales of the 'Design Career Aptitude Scale' are 'basic job competency', 'basic design competency' and' advanced design competency'. This study further classified the 'basic job competency' and 'basic design competency' into several subareas and defined each concepts. Based upon the classification of each subareas, tentative test items were developed through the verification of validity three times by seven design professionals. A pilot study of the developed scale was administered to 506 design majoring college students. The results by exploratory factor analysis were that the basic job competency was composed of four factors; ability of interpersonal relations, goal-driven ability, problem solving ability and self-developing ability. The basic design competency was composed of five factor, grounding in design, computer skills, material sensitivity, formative ability and color sensitivity. The results can be seen as an adequate, delicate factor structure to represent design aptitude, and also the scale can be a useful tool to the students who are conflicting to decide their majors and careers. The further study needed to validate the scale through the investigation of the relationship with related scales measuring designing ability, and with other criteria-referenced group.

A Study on Bioassay of Tritium($^{3}H$) Radioacitivity (三重水素($^{3}H$) 放射能의 生理分析에 關한 硏究)

  • The environment and biological studies of tritium have been carried out in the advanced countries since the mid 1950's. In the case of a potential tritium exposure, the usual procedure is trifium bioassay (as HTO) in human urine in order to determine the amount of tritium deposited in the body called tritium body burden. The maximum permissible body burden(MPBB) of tritium in total body is about $30{\mu}Ci/{\ell}$ for body tissue. In the bioassay, the most common investigation level for detection of tritium in urine is 1/10th of MPBB. For this bioassay project, the first priority is given to obtaining a quench correction curve. This consideration is necessary because of the variability in color of human urine specimens. Quenching effect in this case mainly is caused by the absorption of scintillation light flashes by the urine sample. By the least squares method on the statistical basis, an estimated formula for quench correction curve was determined to be Y = 0.771 + 1.836 ${\tmes}10^{-4}$X, where the efficiency(Y) was ranged from about 12% to 31% in the liquid scientillation counting. In this paper, a brief theory concerning the biological half-life of tritium and the retention formula to apply to systematically distributed tritium are described.
