To reduce the number of candidates in rough mode decision (RMD) process and rate-distortion optimization (RDO) process, the edge information and relative RMD cost are utilized. The experiment results show that the proposed method reduces encoding run-time by 26.81% with a negligible coding loss of 0.79% BD-rate on average.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast macroblock mode decision algorithm in H.264/AVC, based on the image sequence statistics. Specically, considering the directional characteristics of image sequences, we eliminate sub$8{\times}4$ or sub$4{\times}8$ mode decision process based on the rate-distortion cost of Inter$16{\times}8$ or Inter$8{\times}16$ mode respectively. Additionally, exploiting the optimal modes of submacroblock in inter$8{\times}8$ mode, we propose an algorithm to eliminate Intra$4{\times}4$ or Intra$16{\times}16$ mode decision process selectively. From the simulation results, the proposed method reduce the encoding time by maximum 70% of total, compared with the other conventional methods.

  • High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) enables significantly improved compression performance relative to existing standards. However, the advance also requires high computational complexity. To accelerate the intra prediction mode decision, a minimum risk Bayesian classification framework is introduced. The classifier selects a small number of candidate modes to be evaluated by a rate-distortion optimization process using the sum of absolute Hadamard transformed difference (SATD). Moreover, the proposed method provides a loss factor that is a good trade-off model between computational complexity and coding efficiency. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a 31.54% average reduction in the encoding run time with a negligible coding loss of 0.93% BD-rate relative to HEVC test model 16.6 for the Intra_Main common test condition.

  • In this paper, we propose a design of Intra Prediction angular mode decision for high-performance HEVC encoder. Intra Prediction works by performing all 35 modes for efficient encoding. However, in order to process all of the 35 modes, the computational complexity and operational time required are high. Therefore, this paper proposes comparing the difference in the value of the original image pixel, using an algorithm that determines Angular mode efficiently. This new algorithm reduces the Hardware size. The hardware which is proposed was designed using Verilog HDL and was implemented in 65nm technology. Its gate count is 14.9k and operating speed is 2GHz.

  • In this paper, we propose a design of Intra prediction angular mode decision for HEVC encoder. Intra prediction coding of HEVC is a method for predicting a current block by referring to samples reconstructed around a current block. Intra prediction supports a total of 35 modes with 1 DC mode, 1 Planar mode, and 33 Angular modes. Intra prediction coding of HEVC works by performing all 35 modes for efficient encoding. However, in order to process all of the 35 modes, the computational complexity and operational time required are high. Therefore, this paper proposes comparing the difference in the value of the original pixel, using an algorithm that determines angular mode efficiently. This new algorithm reduces the Hardware size. • HEVC is the high efficiency video coding standard, which provides better coding efficiency contrasted with the other video coding standard. But at the same time the computational complexity increases drastically. Thirty-five kinds of intra-prediction modes are defined in HEVC, while 9 kinds of intra prediction modes are defined in H.264/AVC. This paper proposes a fast rough mode decision (RMD) algorithm which adopts the smoothness of the up-reference pixels and the left-reference pixels to decrease the computational complexity. The three step search method is implemented in RMD process. The experimental results compared with HM13.0 indicate that the proposed algorithm can save 39.7% of the encoding time, while Bjontegaard delta bitrate (BDBR) is increased slightly by 1.35% and Bjontegaard delta peak signal-to-noise ratio (BDPSNR) loss is negligible.

  • This paper proposes a fast intra prediction algorithm for the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). HEVC has 35 modes, such as DC mode, Planar mode, and 33 angular modes for the intra-prediction. To reduce the complexity and to support fast decision for intra prediction, this paper proposes a hierarchical mode decision method (HMD). The proposed HMD mainly focuses on how to reduce the number of prediction modes. The experimental results show that the proposed HMD can reduce the encoding time about 39.17% with little BDBR loss. On average, the proposed HMD can achieve the encoding time saving e about 14.13 ~ 19.37% compared to that of the existing algorithms with slightly increasing 0.01 ~ 0.42% BDBR.

  • The most recent standard video codec, H.264/AVC achieves significant coding efficiency by using a rate-distortion optimization(RDO). The RDO is a measurement for selecting the best mode which minimizes the Lagrangian cost among several modes. As a result, the computational complexity is increased drastically in encoder. In this paper, a method for fast intra prediction mode decision is proposed to reduce the RDO complexity. To speed up Intra$4{\times}4$ and Chroma Intra encoding, the proposed method decides the case that MPM (Most Probable Mode) is the best prediction mode. In this case, the RDO process is skipped, and only MPM is used for encoding the block in Intra$4{\times}4$. And the proposed method is also applied to the chroma Intra prediction mode in a similar way to the Intra$4{\times}4$. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves an average encoding time saving of about 63% with negligible loss of PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio).
