Flow and transport at fracture intersections, and their effects on network scale transport, are investigated in three-dimensional random fracture networks. Fracture intersection mixing rules complete mixing and streamline routing are defined in terms of fluxes normal to the intersection line between two fractures. By analyzing flow statistics and particle transfer probabilities distributed along fracture intersections, it is shown that for various network structures with power law size distributions of fractures, the choice of intersection mixing rule makes comparatively little difference in the overall simulated solute migration patterns. The occurrence and effects of local flows around an intersection (local flow cells) are emphasized. Transport simulations at fracture intersections indicate that local flow circulations can arise from variability within the hydraulic head distribution along intersections, and from the internal no flow condition along fracture boundaries. These local flow cells act as an effective mechanism to enhance the nondiffusive breakthrough tailing often observed in discrete fracture networks. It is shown that such non-Fickian (anomalous) solute transport can be accounted for by considering only advective transport, in the framework of a continuous time random walk model. To clarify the effect of forest environmental changes (forest type difference and clearcut) on water storage capacity in soil and stream flow, watershed had been investigated.

This study deals with the traffic accidents at the 4-legged signalized intersections in Cheong-ju. The purpose is to comparatively analyze the characteristics and models by the accident type using the data of 143 intersections. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular emphasis to modeling such the accidents as head on collision, rear end collision, side swipe, side right angle collision, and others. The main results are the followings. First, the overdispersion tests show that the negative binomial regression models are appropriate to the traffic accident data in the above contexts. Second, five accident models are developed, which are all analyzed to be statistically significant. Finally, the models are comparatively evaluated using the common variable(ADT) and type-specific variables.
When the capacity and traffic operation at signalized intersections are analyzed in Korea, the unprotected left-turn saturation flow rate, which is an important parameter for the analysis, is estimated form the USHCM model. thus, exact analysis of the left-turn is not possible because of the difference of traffic environments between two contries. In order to improve this problem, it is undertaken in this study to develop techniques for the estimation of unprotected left-turn saturation flows based on Korean drivers' data. As study intersections, signalized or unsignalized intersections on the 6, 4 and 2 lane streets are selected. the data for the saturation flow measurement and gap-acceptance behavior analysis are inputed in a notebook computer on the sites. The critical acceptance gaps of the 6, 4, and 2 lane streets are analyzed to be 6.0 secs, 4.6 secs, and 4.3 secs respectively. the average minimum headway of the left-turn vehicle was observed to be 2.6 secs. As the model to estimate unportected left-turn saturation flows, the drew model is recommended for 6 and 4 lane streets, and a graph is suggested for the 2-lane street. As the values of the parameters of the Drew model, the 2.6 secs of this study is recommended for the average minimum headway of the left-turn. But, the critical acceptance gap varies according to the approach speed of opposing traffic and driver population, it requires field survey to measure the gap of an intersection; however, the values of the gaps studied in this study may be used for the general intersections in urban area in Korean.
Every year, traffic accidents and traffic congestion have been rapidly increasing, Although the roadway design and signal system have been improved to relieve traffic accidents, traffic casualties and property damage do not decrease. This paper develops a real-time traffic accident detection and analysis system (RTADAS): In the proposed system, we aim to precisely detect traffic accidents at different design and flow of intersections, However, because the data collected from intersections have uncertainty and complicated causal dependency between them, we construct probability-based networks for correct accident detection.

Recently, traffic congestion and environmental pollution have occurred due to population concentration and vehicle increase in large cities. Various studies are being conducted to solve these problems. Most of the traffic congestion in cities is caused by traffic signals at intersections. This paper proposes a dynamic traffic light control (DTLC) scheme to support safe vehicle operation and smooth traffic flow using real-time traffic information based on VANET. DTLC receives instantaneous speed and directional information of each vehicle through road side units (RSUs) to obtain the density and average speed of vehicles for each direction. RSUs deliver this information to traffic light controllers (TLCs), which utilize it to dynamically control traffic lights at intersections. To demonstrate the validity of DTLC, simulations were performed on average driving speed and average waiting time using the ns-2 simulator. Simulation results show that DTLC can provide smooth traffic flow by increasing average driving speed at dense intersections and reducing average waiting time.
The purpose in this study was to review the travel characteristics of the left-turn signal system on the signalized intersections under the study in Pusan area, construct the appropriate transportation systems under the different left-turn signal system : Protected Left-Turn signal system, Permissive Left-Turn signal system, and Protected-Permissive Left-Turn signal system based upon the travel characteristics reviewed, and finally suggest the optimal left-turn signal system which could reduce traffic delay and fuel consumption. and also improve traffic safety on the signalized intersections based upon the optimal transportation system constructed. Based upon the results, it was concluded that the Protected-Permissive Left-Turn signal system would be better and safer than the Permissive Left-Turn signal system in the aspects which could reduce decrease delay and fuel consumption, and simultaneously increase traffic safety on the signalized intersections, even if the optimal Permissive Left Turn signal system was found to be the best left-turn signal system in the aspects of the Measures of Effectiveness(MOE) on the intersections under the study.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study was to develop safety performance functions (SPFs) that use zero-inflated negative binomial regression models for urban intersections in central business districts (CBDs), and to compare the statistical significance of developed models against that of regular negative binomial regression models. METHODS : To develop and analyze the SPFs of intersections in CBDs, data acquisition was conducted for dependent and independent variables in areas of study. We analyzed the SPFs using zero-inflated negative binomial regression model as well as regular negative binomial regression model. We then compared the results by analyzing the statistical significance of the models. RESULTS : SPFs were estimated for all accidents and injury accidents at intersections in CBDs in terms of variables such as AADT, Number of Lanes at Major Roads, Median Barriers, Right Turn with an Exclusive Turn Lane, Turning Guideline, and Front Signal. We also estimated the log-likelihood at convergence and the likelihood ratio of SPFs for comparing the zero-inflated model with the regular model. In he SPFs, estimated log-likelihood at convergence and the likelihood ratio of the zero-inflated model were at -836.736, 0.193 and -836.415, 0.195. Also estimated the log-likelihood at convergence and likelihood ratio of the regular model were at -843.547, 0.187 and -842.631, 0.189, respectively. These figures demonstrate that zero-inflated negative binomial regression models can better explain traffic accidents at intersections in CBDs. CONCLUSIONS : SPFs that use a zero-inflated negative binomial regression model demonstrate better statistical significance compared with those that use a regular negative binomial regression model.

Roundabouts, which belong to traffic circles, are intersections which are similar to the existing rotary form. Roundabouts recently have been constructed all around the world. And interests in roundabouts are increasing in Korea. However, there are lacks of research on pedestrian volume which has a great influence on operation efficiency of roundabouts in urban area. Therefore, this study suggests efficiency analysis and pedestrian signals in roundabouts according to the pedestrian volume. First, VISSIM simulation was organized to analyse volume of one lane roundabouts in urban area. Second, average delay of intersections was calibrated by VISSIM simulation dividing signalized intersections and non-signalized intersections depending on pedestrian volume. Finally, this study showed that roundabouts are suitable when pedestrian volume was under 200person/hr and traffic circles with a pelican signal are suitable when pedestrian volume was over 200person/hr. And when pedestrian volume and traffic volume are over 600person/hr and 1,500vph respectively, fixed signalized intersections fit well.
Though many studies regarding roundabout have been recently conducted, most of them have focused on operational aspect. Moreover, majority of the previous researches analyzes operational effects of single roundabout, but seldom investigate the effects of multi-roundabouts constructed on road networks. In this study, we seek ways to construct multiple roundabouts on road network maximizing their operational effects. The analysis investigate influence of both adjacent signalized and unsignalized intersections as well as influence of the distance from those intersections to roundabouts. The results show that the optimal distance between two adjacent intersections were calculated to be 150m, and any two intersections located within 150m apart influence each other thus imposing operational restrictions on each other. In addition, those results are confirmed using simulation analysis conducted on the real urban network in Nonheon regional area, Incheon City.
There are no specific criteria deciding what type of crosswalk installs although 4 typed crosswalks at signalized intersections classify according to number of stop line, spacing from the border of intersections and existence of traffic islands or not. Accidents involving pedestrians at signalized intersections are classified by type of crosswalks by traffic volume, pedestrian volume at crosswalk, intersection geometry and phase in view of pedestrians' safety at 50 intersections in Gwangju. The Multiple regression models are applied to express the pedestrian accident rate. In addition, process deciding what type of crosswalk installs which includes accident rate involved pedestrian is changed into number of accident is represented to reduce number of accidents. This paper presents what type of crosswalk installs in order to reduce pedestrian involved accidents at new or existing crosswalk.
