  • The metering systems in LPG vaporizers have been frequently exposed to severe conditions and resulted in many problems such as gauge malfunctioning and rupturing if the check-floaters fail to stop liquid outflow when the heat supply for the vaporization of LPG is interrupted. Therefore, to analysis the vaporizer system we carried out the vaporizer performance test and float bulb test by newly devised test equipments. Consequently, we determined the specific gravity of the float bulb and reasonable operating temperature ranges for the LPG and heating waters.

  • This study examined the differences in a searcher's mental states of a complex information search and retrieval task during information search process between the two groups: participants who were exposed to mental demand manipulation and those not exposed. Data from the experiments and questionnaires were analyzed. Based on qualitative approach and quantitative analyses, the results indicated that the participants exposed to mental demand required more thoughts; addressed negative emotions more often; reduced a searcher's efforts; and interrupted search performance than those not exposed. These results suggest that mental demand contributed to a searcher's perceived thought, emotion, effort, and performance, although these mental states differed in relative contribution of information search process. Significant differences were found between the two groups with respect to the component of mental demand, performance, and frustration of the NASA-TLX subjective cognitive load. These results have implications for search user interface design and information search systems among others.

  • Reverse gyrase is a hyperthermophile specific protein which introduces positive supercoils into DNA molecules. Reverse gyrase consists of an N-terminal helicase-like domain and a C-terminal topoisomerase domain. The helicase-like domain shares the three-dimensional structure with two tandem RecA-folds (H1 and H2), in which the subdomain H2 is interrupted by the latch domain (H3). To understand the physical property of the hyperthermophile-specific protein, two subdomains af_H1 and af_H23 have been cloned into E. coli expression vector, pET28a. The $^{15}N$-labeled af_H1 and af_H23 proteins were expressed and purified for heteronuclear NMR study. The af_H1 protein exhibits the well-dispersion of amide signals in its $^1H/^{15}N$-HSQC spectra and thus further NMR study continues to be progressed.

  • Recently, tidal current energy conversion is a promising way to harness the power of tides in order to meet the growing demands of energy utilization. A new concept of tidal current energy conversion device, named Vane Tidal Turbine (VTT), is introduced in this study. VTT has several special features that are potentially more advantageous than the conventional tidal turbines, such as propeller type tidal turbines. The purpose of this study on VTT is to analyze the possibility of extracting the hydrokinetic energy of tidal current and converting it into electricity, and evaluate the performance of turbines for various numbers of blades (six, eight and twelve) using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). At various tip-speed ratios (TSR), the six-bladed turbine obtains the highest power and torque coefficients, power efficiency is up to 28% at TSR = 1.89. Otherwise, the twelve blade design captures the smallest portion of available tidal current energy at all TSRs. However, by adding more blades, torque extracted from the rotor shaft of twelve-bladed turbine is more uniform due to the less interrupted generation of force for a period of time (one revolution).

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of outpatient cost-sharing on health care utilization by the elderly. Methods: The data in this analysis was the health insurance claims data between July 1999 and December 2008 (114 months). The study group was divided into two age groups, namely 60-64 years old and 65-69 years old. This study evaluated the impact of policy change on office visits, the office visits per person, and the percentage of the copayment-paid visits in total visits. Interrupted time series and segmented regression model were used for statistical analysis. Results: The results showed that outpatient cost-sharing decreased office visits, but it also decreased the percentage of copayment-paid visits, implying that the intensity of care increased. There was little difference in the results between the two age groups. But after the introduction of the coinsurance system for those patients under age 65, office visits and the percentage of copayment-paid visits decreased, and the 60-64 years old group had a larger decrease than the 65-69 years old group. Conclusions: This study evaluated the effects of outpatient cost-sharing on health care utilization by the aged. Cost sharing of the elderly had little effect on controlling health care utilization.

  • Many industrial operations require continuous or nearly-continuous operation of machines, which if interrupted can result in significant financial loss. The condition monitoring of these machines has received considerable attention recent years. Rapid developments in semiconductor, computing, and communication with a remote site have led to a new generation of sensor called "smart" sensors which are capable of wireless communication with a remote site. The purpose of this research is the development of smart sensor using which can on-line perform condition monitoring. This system is addressed to detect conditions that may lead to equipment failure when it is running. Moreover it will reduce condition monitoring expense using low cost MEMS accelerometer. This sensor can receive data in real-time or periodic time from MEMS accelerometer. Furthermore, this system is capable for signal preprocessing task (High Pass Filter, Low Pass Filter and Gain Amplifier) and analog to digital converter (A/D) which is controlled by CPU. A/D converter that converts 10bit digital data is used. This sensor communicates with a remote site PC using TCP/IP protocols. Wireless LAN contain IEEE 802.11i-PSK or WPA (PSK, TKIP) encryption. Developed sensor executes performance tests for data acquisition accuracy estimations.

  • Bochdalek hernia is a type of congenital diaphragmatic defect in the posterolateral portion of the diaphragm. The defect is usually Lt. sided due to protective effect of liver on right. Sex distribution is male preponderance [2:1] and it is diagnosed during neonate, mostly first 24 hours, due to severe respiratory distress. We experienced a rare case of old aged female patient with congenital Bochdalek hernia on Rt. side which was found incidentally during treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax of Rt. side. 17 year old female patient was admitted to CS department for chest discomfort on right and mild dyspnea with duration of 20 days. Under the diagnosis of spontaneous pneumothorax, Rt. closed thoracostomy and underwater sealed drainage with continuous suction was applied. On follow-up chest x-ray, poorly defined hazy increased density with multiple air-fluid levels in Rt. lower lung field and Lt. subphrenic free air were noted. So, Barium enema was done under the impression of Rt. diaphragmatic hernia, and nearly entire colon proximal to sigmoid was demonstrated in the Rt. hemithorax. Operation was done-for surgical repair of defected diaphragm through Rt. posterolateral thoracotomy. Operative findings were as follows; 1.Hypoplastic Rt. lung, esp. RML & RLL. 2.Nearly entirely intestines were herniated. 3.Diaphragmatic defect was located on posterolateral portion of the diaphragm, about 10x3cm in size with blunt smooth margin. 4.A large bleb on apex of RUL of lung. Herniated intestines were repaired into abdominal cavity manually and defect of diaphragm was repaired with No. I black silk interrupted sutures directly, and bleb was resected. Postoperative courses were uneventful and the patient was discharged with good condition on POD 14th.

  • Endocardial cushion defects is a rare congenital heart disease. We experienced two complete endocardial cushion defects[ECD] and three partial ones, which were successfully repaired between 1986 and 1987. In a patient of complete ECD, associated with secundum ASD, Pulmonary stenosis and Down`s syndrome, the atrial and ventricular septal defects were closed separately with bovine pericardium and Dacron patches respectively, and then pulmonary stenosis was relieved by transannular patch widening in addition to valvotomy and infundibulectomy. In another patient with complete ECD, small interventricular communication was closed with simple suture with pledget and primum ASD was closed with pericardial patch. In first patient of partial ECD, primum atrial septal defect was closed with pericardial patch. In second patient of partial ECD, associated with secundum ASD, direct closure of secundum ASD and patch closure of primum ASD were performed. In third patient of partial ECD, associated with patent foramen ovale[PFO], primum ASD was closed with bovine pericardial patch and PFO was closed directly. In all patient except third patient of partial ECD, mitral clefts were closed with three or four 5-0 prolene interrupted sutures. Transient A-V dissociation developed postoperatively in two patients and transient nodal rhythm developed postoperatively in other two patients. Heart failure in complete ECD with Down`s syndrome was overcome with medical treatment.

  • Different suture techniques have been used for anastomosis in coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Bypass surgery may be difficult for patients who have small coronary arteries or marked size discrepancies between target coronary arteries and grafts. For proximal and distal anastomoses, three continuous stitches are first placed in the heel and toe of the small coronary arteries; for sequential anastomosis, an interrupted eight-stitch technique is used. We applied these anastomotic suture techniques in patients requiring coronary artery bypass graft surgery, achieving an early angiographic patency rate of 100%.
