  • The purpose of this study was to compare the right and left eye size, distance between two eyes, interpupillary distance on growth stage aging changes in Korean. The author divided into 5 groups according to subject's age(group A : 7~12 years, group B : 13~15 years, group C : 16~18 years, group D : 19~24 years, group E : 25~30 years). The high values of inter outer canthal distance(T) and distance between two eyes(G) were 94.30 mm, 36.66 mm at group B respectively. The ratio of identical eye size was about 10.0% in A, B, C group but 22.7% in E group. P[T-(right eye size + left eye size) / 2] was wider than IPD. Data showed that the difference was 5.72 mm in group B and 1.13 mm in group E. The reason for this is that the pupils are displaced nasally from the center of the limbal ring. This has significant meaning in ophthalmic procedures.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to measure and evaluate changes of visual responses in viewing a 2D and 3D (three-dimensional) image. Methods: The subjects were 44 college students aged 19 to 25 years with normal binocular vision. The visual responses measured were CA/C (convergence accommodation/convergence) ratio, convergence-induced PD(interpupillary distance), accommodative responses, perceived distance in viewing a 3D image. Results: Convergence and accommodative responses in viewing the 3D image were significantly larger (p<0.05) than in 2D. A moderate positive correction was found between CA/C ratio and accommodative response (r = 0.477, p = 0.001). It was indicated that smaller PD had larger depth perception. Convergence in viewing the 3D image was significantly larger (p<0.05) than that at cognitive distance. Conclusions: The visual fatigue may be more intense in larger CA/C ratio and smaller PD when viewing 3D images.

  • Purpose: Measurement of the horizontal and vertical prism diopter was investigated which was occurred due to distance differences between the optical inter-centeral distance (OC) and the interpupillary distance (PD) of the prescribed glasses. Methods: We surveyed 96 subjects (192 eyes) at the average age of 21.56 years old. The PD was measured by using the PD measurement system (DONGYANG PD-85, Korea), and the OC of the glasses was measured by using the projective peak refractive power measurement system (TOPCON CL-200, Japan). The OH value was measured by using Penlight and the PD ruler. Results: The PD which had been measured by the PD system and the OC of the glasses revealed 78.1% of differences. 62.5% of the objects were base-in value prescribed glasses; 58.3% were out of permissible error. Only 8 subject showed concurrence between the prescribed glasses and the OH value, and 82.3% of the objects were induced vertical prism of over 1 (prism diopter). Conclusions: In order to improve the vision function of people who wear glasses, it is necessary to advance the accuracy of PD, OH measurement and making glasses as well.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the convergence accommodation to convergence (CA/C) ratio and to investigate relationships among age, accommodative amplitude and PD (interpupillary distance) of adults in their early twenties with normal binocular vision. Methods: 44 subjects (mean age, $21.75{\pm}1.16$ years) with healthy eyes were examined. The CA/C ratios were measured by using the difference of Gaussian (DOG) target with retinoscopy. Results: The mean CA/C ratio was $0.052{\pm}0.017$ D/$\Delta$. A moderate negative correction was present between CA/C ratio and age (r = -0.50, p = 0.0005), and a highly positive correction was found between CA/C ratio and accommodative amplitude (r = 0.79, p<0.0001). There was no relation between PD and CA/C ratio. Conclusions: The CA/C ratio presented was mean value for adults in their early twenties with healthy eye between 19 and 25 years of age. There was a high correlation between accommodative amplitude and CA/C ratio. Therefore, the CA/C ratio will be useful basic information for comparison in age, gender and binocular anomalies with similar data from other countries.

  • This study was designed as a reference of vertical dimension in prosthetic treatment. The author analyzed six facial measurements, namely, (1) the height of lower face at maximum intercuspal position, (2) the height of lower face at resting position, (3) midface, (4) external ear and lateral wall of orbit, (5) interpupillary distance, (6) distance between pupil and mouth in the 100 Won-kwang Univ. Dental collage students(50 : male, 50 : female), who have normal occlusion, no posterior prosthesis, no experience of orthodontic treatment, and no deformity of facial soft tissue and no temporomandibular dysfunction. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The length of midface was shortest and the inter-pupillary distance was longest in both male and female. 2. The length difference with the length of midface and lower face at maximum intercuspal position was 5.64mm in male and 2.23mm in female, so the lower face was longer, 3. The facial measuring component, similar to lower face at maximum intercuspation, was the length of between medial wall of external ear and lateral wall of orbit. It's difference was 1.3mm in male, 1.77mm in female, and the lower face was shorter. 4. The difference of lower facial length in resting position and maximum intercuspation was 2.48mm in male, 2.24mm in female, the length of resting position was therefore longer. 5. The most clost correlation with the height of maximum intercuspal positioning lower face was resting lower face in both groups.

  • In this paper we propose a binocular holographic three-dimensional (3D) imaging system using optical scanning holography. To realize a binocular 3D holographic imaging system, we could acquire the complex holograms of a real object after designing a holographic display system based on interpupillary distance and pupil size, and these holograms could be optically reconstructed following numerical signal processing with an amplitude spatial light modulator. The proposed binocular 3D holographic imaging system using optical scanning holography was verified experimentally.

  • The primary method of diagnosis in craniofacial deformity patient is used by gross inspection. The study for objective analysis and evaluation in Korean maxillofacial soft tissue portions is rare and our normals have been based on Caucasian such as American. But it is difficult to apply it to ours so we studied the frontal photometric measurements for maxillofacial Korean normals. The photograph were taken with the subject sitting in head position parallel with interpupillary plane to the floor. During taking pictures, facial analyser by Obwegeser in Martin was used for correct measurements. 54 male and 57 female ages 14 to 15 years were selected from a group of 111 healthy middle school students in Inchon. 1. The vertical measurements in glabella-subnasale, subnasale-stomion and stomion-menton in the male were higher than in the female subjects in $14{\sim}15$ years old Korean, so middle and lower third face were higher than those of female(p<0.05). 2. The horizontal measurements of female was higher than those of male in the rt. and It. eye width but smaller in nose width and lip width(p<0.05). 3. There was no significant difference in gender compared with soft cheek and mention angle measurements When our reports were compared with american white population, the vertical proportions in Korean normals were similar to american and the line measurements in middle facial length, nose width and intercanthal distance were higher than those of american.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the angular differences between the horizontal reference planes on the CBCT generated PA cephalogram and the modified interpupillary plane, which was usually used in the clinical examination, and to evaluate the validity of the horizontal reference planes. Methods: The CBCT generated PA cephalogram was used to measure the angles between the FH, Lo and IP planes. The subjects consisted of 42 patients with facial asymmetry (males: 21, females: 21, mean-age: 21.6 years). The control groups were also assessed (males: 10, females: 10, mean-age: 23.8 years). The distance of the interpupil was measured on the soft-tissue volume rendered image. The angular differences were statistically analyzed using the $Mann-Whitney$ $U$ $test$ for inter-group comparisons and the $Friedman$ $test$ for intra-group comparisions. Results: The angle between the FH plane and IP plane (the angle of the FH-IP line) showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups ($p$ <0.05). There was no statistical differences between each angle (angle of the FH-IP line, angle of the FH-Lo line, angle of the Lo-IP line) on the intra-group comparision ($p$ >0.05). Conclusion: The angle between the Lo line and IP line (angle of the Lo-IP line) showed no statistically significant difference in both the control and asymmetry groups. Therefore, the Lo line could be used as a horizontal reference plane in CBCT generated PA cephalograms.
