The Korean high speed railroad is scheduled to open in 2004. For railroad-based integrated transfer system, it is essential to develop the intermodal information system for easy transfer to other travel modes. The understanding of mode choices by KTX passengers is crucial for the intermodal transportation planning. Recent development of Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS) made it possible for railroad users to access the transportation information in a cabin or waiting areas at the station. Development of intermodal transportation information system will influence the relative demand for traveling by train from competing other transportation modes. The research is focused on a general overview of the ITS with an emphasis on intermodal transportation information system.

Purpose - The Korean government has devised intermodal transportation policies and granted subsidies to shippers and logistics companies that made a conversion of transportation means through the policies. This provides support by expanding the complex uniform railroad transportation and overhauling the deteriorated railroad facilities. As for 2013, however, the freight transportation percentage of railroad was 4.5% in tons and 8.5% in ton kilometers. Meanwhile, since the 1990s, developed countries such as the U.S. and Europe have been trying to expand intermodal freight transport with a legal and institutional support to build a logistics system corresponding with social and economic environmental changes. In this study, I set out to examine the effects of the intermodal freight transport policies in the EU and the U.S., and to explore the direction of setting up a rail intermodal transport system in South Korea. Research design, data, and methodology - The paper used a qualitative research methodology through the literature review. First, was an overview of Intermodal transportation in the EU, U.S. and UN. Second, it describes the development of transport in Europe and the U.S. with particular emphasis on intermodal freight transport. Third, it explores the direction of setting up a intermodal freight transport in South Korea. The last section contains concluding remarks. Results - As for the EU, it has been promoting integration between transport and intermodal logistics network designs while utilizing ITS or ICT and supports for rail freight intermodal by giving reduction to a facilities fee or subsidizing for rail freight in order to minimize the cost of external due to freight transport. On the other hand, as for the U.S., it has been made up of an industrial-led operating project and has been promoting it to improve accessibility between intermodal hubs and cargo terminals through intermodal corridor program, and an intermodal cargo hub access corridor projects, etc. Moreover, it has tried to construct intermodal transport system using ITS or ICT and to remove Barrier. As a result, in these countries, the proportion of intermodal freight transport is going to be the second significant transport compared with rail and maritime transport. An Effective rail intermodal transport system is needed in South Korea, as seen in the case of these countries. In order to achieve this object, the following points are required to establish radical infrastructure policy; diversify investment financing measures taken under public-private partnerships, legal responsibilities, improvement of utilization of existing facilities to connect the railway terminal and truck terminal, and enhancement service competitiveness through providing cargo tracking and security information that combines the ITS and ICT. Conclusions - This study will be used as a basis for policy and support for intermodal freight transport in South Korea. In the future, it is also necessary to examine from the perspective of the shipper companies using the rail intermodal transport, ie, recognition of shipper, needed institutional supports, and transportation demand forecasting and cost-effective analysis of the railway infrastructure systems improvement.

The present transportation system is avoiding the competitive relationship between each transportation system and it is urgently needed the cooperative relationship between transportation system. The passengers using the various mass transportation is requiring a multimodal environment. Particularly now is the period when railroad system is considering intermodal environment. In this paper, concerning the above matters, we are dealing with intermodal at chapter2, and study cases of japan and europe at chapter 3, and at chapter 4 we are dealing with intermodal environment preparing considerations of railway system. Concerning about the approach of intermodal transportation, we are adopting the software-oriented method of using information technique and communication technique.

The railway station is an important intermodal network point of the railway passengers who use the other transportation means and go to the destination. So at the railway station, the device of various intermodal transfer information is needed to transfer the other transportation means. In this paper, we study the passing characteristics of transfer traffic line of the passengers of railway station and the status of information provision for use of transfer facility and we describe the strategies of information provision according to the necessary intermodal transfer to use the other transportation means.

복합운송은 두 개 이상의 수송수단을 이용하는 기점에서 종점까지의 수송으로 정의될 수 있다. 복합운송이 허브 네트워크에 활용되면 집화된 수송량이 보다 적절한 수단들과 기술들에 의해 수송되기 때문에 네트워크 효율성이 제고될 수 있다. 이러한 장점에도 불구하고 문제의 복잡성 등으로 인하여 복합운송 허브 네트워크 설계 문제에 관한 연구는 그동안 활발하게 수행되지 않았다. 본 연구의 목적은 단일할당 전략을 이용하는 복합운송 허브 네트워크 설계 최적화 모형을 개발하는 것이다. 본 연구에서 개발된 모형은 수송비용, 재고비용, 서비스지체비용 등 복합운송 허브 네트워크에서 발생하는 다양한 비용요소들을 고려하는 한편, 운행빈도 변수를 사용함으로써 수송량 집화에 따른 수송 규모의 경제 효과를 내생적으로 결정할 수 있어 복합운송을 활용하는 실제 허브 네트워크의 특성들을 잘 반영할 수 있다. 개발된 모형은 비선형 정수계획 문제의 복잡한 구조를 가지고 있기 때문에, 본 연구에서는 모형에 대한 해석적 연구를 통하여 모형을 단순화함으로써 향후 알고리즘을 개발하기 위한 이론적 출발점을 제시한다. 본 연구는 복합운송 허브 네트워크의 설계뿐만 아니라 기존의 물류시스템 평가에도 기여할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

During the last several years, the high speed railway system has been constructed and it is scheduled to open sometime in 2004. To fulfil its duties, it is essential to view intermodalism in the context of broader technological developments in easy access to high speed railway station. And also, to understand the economic importance of intermodal transportation, continual research is needed on the costs and distributional effects of alternative intermodal mechanisms for public works, including direct service to local station or easy transfer to other mass transportation modes. In this paper, necessary courses for local governments involvement are taken, and additional resources must be found that will benefit the entire railway system.

Recently, intermodal transportation systems are significantly considered as enhanced technique or future railroad logistics. These are aimed for particularly reducing complicated job process in the railroad based transportation and relevant logistic cost in economic viewpoint. In this paper we suggest a horizontal transfer system using hydro-motor and hydro-cylinder for intermodal transportation system. This system can assist to transfer the containers horizontally for train logistics automations.

For years, Korea, China and Japan have been continuously increasing intra-trade. In addition, by concluding FTA (Free Trade Agreement) among Korea, Japan and China, the trade capacity will be increased. In this way, the increasing trade capacity will induce to change north-east Asian economy. This paper researches which method is more economical and efficient in the aspect of the transportation time and distance, after comparing the existing marine transportation network with new intermodal transportation network considering TKR.

효율적인 물류 수송을 위한 수단으로 인터모달 자동운송 대차에 대한 요구가 있다. 인터모달은 이종 운송 수단과 연계, 특정 구간의 단선 운행에 대한 수요가 높은 특징을 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 인터모달 자동운송 대차 특징에 적합하도록 기존 철도 운행시스템과 달리 간소하면서도 인터모달 자동운송 대차에 최적화된 주행정보 시스템을 구현 및 실대형 시연모델에 적용하여 정위치 정차 및 각 시스템 간 원활한 인터페이스 및 간소화된 시스템으로 운용 사례를 제시한다.
