  • In this paper, it was manufactured an interferometric optical fiber sensor and measured partial discharge acoustic signal caused by defect of power facilities such as power cables, transformers and gas insulation. Acrylic and aluminium mandrels wound with fiber-optic were chosen as optical fiber sensor, Sagnac and Mach-Zehnder interferometers were chosen to detect discharge acoustic signals. The two fiber optic interferometers were identified by using the PZT. Discharge experimentation set in the discharge imitation cell in oil tank and the discharge phenomena was generated. Based on the experimental result, to detect the discharge acoustic signal, Sagnac interferometer can detect stably the acoustic signal than the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. It is shown that Sagnac optical fiber sensor can detect the discharge acoustic signals effectively.

  • The Submillimeter Array (SMA), a collaborative project of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy & Astrophysics (ASIAA), has begun operation on Mauna Kea in Hawaii. A total of eight 6-m radio telescopes comprise the array with currently working receiver bands at 230, 345, and 690 GHz. The array will have 8 receiver bands covering the frequency range of 180-900 GHz. The backend is flexible analog-digital correlator with a full bandwidth of 2GHz, which is very powerful to cover several line emissions simultaneously. The current status and future plans of the SMA are described with emphasis on Taiwanese efforts.

  • We review recent research related to shearing interferometry, reported over the last two decades. Shearing interferometry is categorized as azimuthal, radial, or lateral shearing interferometers by its fundamental principle to generate interference. In this review the research trends for each technique are provided, with a summary of experimental results containing theoretical background, the optical configuration, analysis, and perspective on its application fields.

  • We report temperature and strain sensing characteristics of two kinds of in-line fiber interferometers. One interferometer consists of a section of Hollow Optical Fiber(HOF) spliced between two Photonic Bandgap Fibers(PBGF) and the other is built by splicing a section of HOF between two Large Mode Area-Photonic Crystal Fibers(LMA-PCF). To minimize the splice losses, we carefully optimized the heating time and arc current of the splicer so as not to collapse the air holes of the fiber. It is found that the first interferometer has a temperature sensitivity of 15.4 pm/$^{\circ}C$ and a strain sensitivity of 0.24 pm/${\mu}\varepsilon$. The other interferometer exhibits a temperature sensitivity of 17.4 pm/$^{\circ}C$ and a strain sensitivity of 0.2 pm/${\mu}\varepsilon$.

  • As a noninvasive imaging method, optical coherence tomography system has been extensively studied because it has some advantages such as imaging of high resolution, low cost, and compact size configuration. In order to improve the SNR of OCT system, two types of interferometers were configured and then, we compared simulation with measurement of reference sample. In the OCT system is configured with Michelson interferometer, the contrast of cross-sectional image is reduced with low SNR detection which is due to loss of feedback interference signal from light source part. Also, in order to image measured data with real time, image processing program is constructed. From results of simulation, it is confirmed that improved Michelson interferometer is improved about 10[dB] with a 50 : 50 fiber coupler. And from the measurement of reference sample, about 5[dB] is improved with a 50 : 50 fiber coupler. It is confirmed that the OCT system is configured with the improved Michelson interferometer which has a good distinctive cross-sectional image due to higher contrast.

  • Small vibration displacements may be measured by optical interferometers, based on the Michelson method. The standard Michelson interferometer works well when the mirror displacements are relatively large compared to the optical wavelength. But it does not work for displacements less than approximately a quater of optical wavelength. Several multiple reflection laser interferometers, simply modified standard Michelson interferometer, have been developed to decrease the minimum detectable limits. Among these a relatively simple and easy multiple reflection system is used to measure the small vibration displacements. This multiple reflection system is constructed with a right angle prism and a convex lens. Therefore this system makes it possible to measure a vibration displacement of the small area on the vibrating structure. The fringe interpolation method and curve fitting method are used to determine accurately the small vibration displacements from the measured interference fringe patterns. Also computer simulation technique is used to check the accuracies of these method. According to the results of the computer simulation technique, the curve fitting method is more accurate than the fringe interpolation method. The optically measured results are in good agreement with those of the standard accelerometer with high accuracy and it is possible to measure the peak vibration displacement as small as 9.01nm using multiple reflection system and curve fitting method.

  • In this paper, an incoherent holographic 3D imaging and display system based on the modified triangular and Mach-Zehnder interferometers is optically implemented and some experiments are carried out. Incoherent hologram of a 3D object is generated by using the hologram input system of modified triangular interferometer. Then this complex hologram is reconstructed by using the hologram output system of modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer in which two LCD spatial light modulators and a waveplate are inserted. From the experiment with two point sources having a depth difference of 100 mm each other, it is revealed that each point source can be independently reconstructed at its own focal position from the complex hologram, while both of the bias and conjugate image are simultaneously eliminated at the same time. And in the experiment with the real 3D object of two dices having a depth difference of 30 mm each other, it is also conformed that the bias and conjugate image can be effectively eliminated from the hologram pattern and each 3D dice can be also successfully reconstructed at its own focal position from the complex hologram. These experiment results finally suggest a possibility of implementing a new incoherent holographic 3D imaging and display system using the modified triangular and Mach-Zehender interferometers.

  • Single mode fiber optic interferometers using the Fabry-Perot configuration were embedded in a reinforced concrete structure. These interferometers investigated the character of phase shift and strain for internal loads. The 10 mm length of FFPI in the continuous length of single mode fiber (SMF) were produced with two pieces of SMF coated were $TiO_2$ dielectric film utilizing the fusion splicing technique. The fabricated fiber optic Fabry-Perot interferometer(FFPI) and the 6 mm length of steel bar were buried with specimen ($100{\times}100{\times}50\;mm^3$) which was made of concrete structure. The resin protects FFPI and fiber leads from squeezed concrete. Sensors at different point in the structure were multiplexed by TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) method and the deformation to the external loads at each point could be monitored simultaneously. The output signals were proportional to the external loads applied to the structure and the sensitivity of the sensors were $1.03^{\circ}/kg$ and $0.76^{\circ}/kg$ respectively.
