In this paper, a closed-form rigorous solution for interfacial stress in continuous steel beam with variable section strengthened with bonded prestressed FRP plates and subjected to a uniformly distributed load is developed using linear elastic theory and including the variation of fiber volume fractions with a longitudinal orientation of the fibers of the FRP plates. The results show that there exists a high concentration of both shear and normal stress at the ends of the laminate, which might result in premature failure of the strengthening scheme at these locations. The theoretical predictions are compared with other existing solutions. Overall, the predictions of the different solutions agree closely with each other. A parametric study has been conducted to investigate the sensitivity of interface behavior to parameters such as laminate and adhesive stiffness, the thickness of the laminate and the fiber volume fractions where all were found to have a marked effect on the magnitude of maximum shear and normal stress in the composite member. This research gives a numerical precision in relating to the others studies which neglect the effect of prestressed plate and the shear lag impact. The physical and geometric properties of materials are taken into account, and that may play an important role in reducing the interfacial stresses magnitude.
Various characteristics of a thin liquid film in its vapor-phase are investigated using the molecular dynamics technique. Local distributions of the temperature, density, normal and tangential pressure components, and stress are calculated for various film thicknesses and temperature levels. Distributions of local stresses change considerably with respect to film thicknesses, and interracial regions on both sides of the film start to overlap with each other as the film becomes thinner. Integration of the local stresses, i.e., the surface tension, however, does not vary much regardless of the interfacial overlap. The minimum thickness of a liquid film before rupturing is estimated with respect to the calculation domain sizes and is compared with a simple theoretical relation.
This paper presents a closed-form higher-order analysis of interfacial shear stresses in RC continuous beams strengthened with bonded prestressed laminates. For retrofitting reinforced concrete continuous beams is to bond fiber reinforced prestressed composite plates to their tensile faces. An important failure mode of such plated beams is the debonding of the composite plates from the concrete due to high level of stress concentration in the adhesive at the ends of the composite plate. The model is based on equilibrium and deformations compatibility requirements in and all parts of the strengthened beam, where both the shear and normal stresses are assumed to be invariant across the adhesive layer thickness. In the present theoretical analysis, the adherend shear deformations are taken into account by assuming a parabolic shear stress through the thickness of both the RC continuous beams strengthened with bonded prestressed laminates. The theoretical predictions are compared with other existing solutions. A parametric study has been conducted to investigate the sensitivity of interface behavior to parameters such as laminate stiffness and the thickness of the laminate where all were found to have a marked effect on the magnitude of maximum shear and normal stress in the composite member.

Single fiber pull-out technique has been commonly used to characterize the mechanical behavior of interface in fiber reinforced composite materials. An improved analysis considering the effects of transversely isotropic properties of fiber and the effects of thermal residual stresses in both radial and axial directions along the fiber/matrix interface is developed for the single fiber pull-out test. Although the stress transfer properties across the interface is not much affected by considering the transversely isotropic properties of fiber, interfacial debonding is notably encouraged by the effect. The interfacial shear stress that plays an important role in interfacial debonding is very much affected by the component of axial thermal residual stress in the bonded region, which can induce a two-way debonding mechanism.
This paper presents a study of the effect of varying the roll gap of oval pass in round-oval-round pass sequence on the interracial slip of workpiece, entrance and exit velocities, stresses and roll load that the workpiece experiences during rolling, by applying analytical method, finite element simulation and verification through hot bar rolling tests. The results have shown that the roll gap variation of oval pass affects the interfacial slip of workpiece along the groove contact and the specific roll pressure. The optimum conditions in terms of minimum interfacial slip and minimum specific roll pressure, which might influence the maximum groove life, is obtained when the subsequent round pass is completely filled.
Interfacial stress singularity in a unidirectional two-dimensional laminate model consisting of an elastic fiber and a viscoelastic matrix has been investigated using the time-domain boundary element method. First, the interfacial singular stresses between the fiber and the matrix of a unidirectional laminate subjected to a uniform transverse tensile strain have been investigated near the free surface, but without any defect or any edge crack. Such a stress singularity might lead to fiber-matrix debonding or interfacial edge cracks. Then, the overall stress intensity factor for the case of a small interfacial edge crack of length a has been computed.
The bonding interface of the concrete slab track and cement-asphalt mortar layer plays an important role in transferring load and restraining the track slab's deformation for slab track structures without concrete bollards in high-speed railway. However, the interfacial bond-slip behavior is seldom considered in the structural analysis; no credible constitutive model has been presented until now. Elaborating the field tests of concrete to cement-asphalt mortar interface subjected to longitudinal and transverse shear loads, this paper revealed its bond capacity and failure characteristics. Interfacial fractures all happen on the contact surface of the concrete track slab and mortar-layer in the experiments. Aiming at this failure mechanism, an interfacial mechanical model that employed the bilinear local bond-slip law was established. Then, the interfacial shear stresses of different loading stages and the load-displacement response were derived. By ensuring that the theoretical load-displacement curve is consistent with the experiment result, an interfacial bond-slip constitutive model including its the corresponding parameters was proposed in this paper. Additionally, a finite element model was used to validate this constitutive model further. The constitutive model presented in this paper can be used to describe the real interfacial bonding effect of slab track structures with similar materials under shear loads.
This paper deals with the relaxation of singular stresses developed in an epoxy adhesive at high temperature. The interface stresses are analyzed using BEM. The adhesive employed in this study is an epoxy which can be cured at room temperature. The adhesive is assumed to be linearly viscoelastic. First, the distribution of the interface stresses developed in the adhesive layer under the uniform tensile stress has been calculated. The singular stress has been observed near the interface corner. Such singular stresses near the interface corner may cause epoxy layer separated from adherent. Second, the interfacial thermal stress has been investigated. The uniform temperature rise can relieve the stress level developed in the adhesive layer under the external loading, which can be viewed as an advantage of thermal loading. It is also obvious that temperature rise reduces the bonding strength of the adhesive layer. Experimental evaluation is required to assess a trade-off between the advantageous and deleterious effects of temperature.
Current methodologies used for the inference of thin film stresses through curvature measurements are strictly restricted to stress and curvature states which are assumed to remain uniform over the entire film/substrate system. These methodologies have recently been extended to non-uniform stress and curvature states for the thin film subject to non-uniform, isotropic misfit strains. In this paper we study the same thin film/substrate system but subject to non-uniform, anisotropic misfit strains. The film stresses and system curvatures are both obtained in terms of the non-uniform, anisotropic misfit strains. For arbitrarily non-uniform, anisotropic misfit strains, it is shown that a direct relation between film stresses and system curvatures cannot be established. However, such a relation exists for uniform or linear anisotropic misfit strains, or for the average film stresses and average system curvatures when the anisotropic misfit strains are arbitrarily non-uniform.
