A series of amphiphilic dendrons n-18 (n: generation number, 18: octadecyl chain) based on an aliphatic polyether denderitic core and octadecyl peripheries were synthesized using a convergent dendron synthesis consisting of a Williamson etherification and hydroboration/oxidation reactions. This study investigated their thermal and self-assembling behavior in the solid state using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) absorption spectroscopy, and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). DSC indicated that the melting transition and the corresponding heat of the fusion of the octadecyl chain decreased with each generation. FT-IR showed that the hydroxyl focal groups were hydrogen-bonded with one another in the solid state. DSC and FT-IR indicated microphase-separation between the hydrophilic dendritic cores and hydrophobic octadecyl peripheries. SAXS data analysis in the solid state suggested that the lower-generation dendrons 1-18 and 2-18 self-assemble into lamellar structures based upon a bilayered packing of octadecyl peripheries. In contrast, the analyzed data of higher-generation dendron 3-18 is consistent with 2-D oblique columnar structures, which presumably consist of elliptical cross sections. The data obtained could be rationalized by microphase-separation between the hydrophilic dendritic core and hydrophobic octadecyl peripheries, and the degree of interfacial curvature associated with dendron generation.

The composite membranes were prepared on the surface of hydrophobic porous poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber membranes through the interfacial polymerization. The preparation variables were the concentrations of piperazine (PIP), trimesoyl chloride (TMC) and the contents of polyethylene glyco l (PEG). The separation characterization of the resulting membranes were carried out for aqueous 100 ppm solution of NaCl, $CaSO_4$, and $MgCl_2$ and also mixed 300 ppm solution of NaCl and $CaSO_4$ in terms of the flux and rejection. Both the flux and rejection were the highest when the interfacial polymerization was conducted using TMC. When TMC concentration was 0.1 wt%, the flux and rejection were shown 48.3 LMH ($L/m^2{\cdot}hr$) and 59%, respectively. To improve the flux, the annealing post-treatment and the addition of PEG into piperazine were done. As expected, the overall flux was enhanced while the rejection was reduced.

The treated water inside the ballast electrolytic cell creates a highly alkaline atmosphere due to hydroxide generated at the DSA(Dimension Stable Anode) electrode during electrolysis. In this study, a composite material that can replace the weakness of the PE-coated steel pipe used in the existing ballast pipe was prepared. The test samples are BRE(Basalt fiber reinforced epoxy), BRP(Basalt fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester), GRE(Glass fiber reinforced epoxy), and GRP(Glass fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester). And then it was immersed in NaOH for 720 hours. The friction test of each specimen was conducted. The Friction coefficient analysis according to material friction depth and interfacial adhesion behavior between resin and fiber were analyzed. As a result, the mechanism of interfacial separation between resin and fiber could be analyzed. In the case of the unsaturated polyester resin with low interfacial bonding strength the longer the immersion time in the alkaline solution, the faster the internal deterioration caused by the deterioration that started from the surface, resulting in a decrease in the friction coefficient. It is hoped that this study will help to understand the degradation behavior of composite materials immersed in various chemical solutions such as NaOH, acid, and sodium hypochlorite in the future.

In the past few decades, polymeric membrane has played an important role in gas separation applications. For the separation of $CO_2$, one of greenhouse gases, high permselectivity, long-term stability and scale-up are needed. However, conventional polymeric membranes have shown a trade-off relation between permeability and selectivity while inorganic materials are highly permeable but expensive. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) combining the advantages of both polymeric and inorganic materials have become a possible breakthrough for the next-generation gas separation membranes. The MMMs could be either symmetric or asymmetric but the latter is more preferred to improve the permeance. Important factors influencing the MMM fabrication include homogeneous distribution of inorganic particles and good interfacial contact between inorganic filler and organic matrix. Recently, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have received much attention as a new class of porous crystalline materials and a potential candidate for $CO_2$ separation. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), a sub-branch of MOFs, are the most widely used in MMMs due to small particle size and appropriate pore size for $CO_2$ separation. One of the major issues associated with the incorporation of porous particles in a polymeric membrane is to control the microstructure of the porous particle materials such as particle size, orientation, and boundary conditions etc. In this review, major challenges surrounding MMMs and the strategies to tackle these challenges are given in detail.
Two-stage emulsion polymerizations of hydrophobic monomers on hydrophilic seed polymer particles were carried out to make core-shell composite particles. It was found that the loci of polymerization in the second stage were the surface layer of the hydrophilic seed latex particles, and that it has resulted in the formation of either eccentric core-shell particles with the core exposed to the aqueous phase or aggregated nonspherical composite particles with the shell attached on the seed surface as many small separated particles. The driving force of these phenomena is related to the gain in free energy of the system in going from the hydrophobic polymer-water interface to hydrophilic polymer-water interface. Thermodynamic analysis of the present polymerization system, which was based on spreading coefficients, supported the likely occurrence of such nonspherical particles due to the combined effects of interfacial free energies and phase separation between the two polymer phases. A hypothetical pathway was proposed to prepare hydrophilic core-hydrophobic shell composite latex particles, which is based on the concept of opposing driving and resistance forces for the phase migration. It was found that the viscosity of the monomer-swollen polymer phase played important role in the formation of particle morphology.
Recent advances in recombinant DNA technology have resulted in development of many new protein drugs. Due to the unique properties of protein druges, they have to be delivered by parenteral injection Although delivery of protein drugs by other routes, such as pulmonary and nasal routes, has shown some promises, to date most protein drugs are administered by par-enteral routs. For long-term delivery of protein drugs by parenteral administration, they have been formulated into biodegradable microspheres. A number of microencapsulation methods have been developed, and the currently used microencapsulation methods are reviewed here, The microen-capsulation methods have been divided based on the method used. They are: solvent evapora-tion/extraction; phase separation (coacervation);spray drying; ionotropic gelation/polyelectrolyte complexation; interfacial polyumerization and supercritical fluid precipitation. Each method is de-scribed fro its applications, advantages, and limitations.
This paper deals with the experiment to obtain quantitative information about conditions of the interface between a water drop and surrounding oil. Velocity distributions in very close region of the interface are measured by introducing a new illumination technique and a telecentric lens. It enables precise measurements of velocity distributions in the close region to the interface. Although the measured velocity distributions exhibit strong influence from the solid wall of an experimental tube, the coincidence of inner and outside velocities on the interface is clearly confirmed for the clean interface. The shearing stresses on the interface, which are proportional to the velocity gradient normal to the interface, clearly show conditions of contaminated interface, which can be divided into two parts. From front stagnation point to somewhere near a separation point, the distribution of shearing stresses is well coincide with that of the Hadamard's analytical solution, while the distribution on the latter part of the interface sows quite different feature, which is supposed to be strongly influenced by contamination of the surface.

This study describes a simulation of two-dimensional bubble forming and motion by the Lattice Boltzmann Method with the phase field equation. The free energy model is used to treat the interfacial force and deformation of binary fluids system, drawn into a T-junction the micro channel. A numerical simulation of a binary flow in a cross-junction channel is carried out by using the parallel computation method. The aim in this investigation is to examine the applicability of LBM to numerical analysis of binary fluid separation and motion in the micro channel.
Abstract Polyurethanes have been designed and fabricated into membranes with unique separation properties. Moreover, polyurethane microcapsules also have been reported actively as controlled release materials for their excellent blood compatibility, tensile strength and permeability. In this study, polyurethane microcapsules were synthesized by interfacial polymerization in an aqueous poly(ethylene glycol) dispersion of toluene diisocyanate in perfume oil using poly(vinyl alcohol) as the stabilizing agent. The effect of a few important process conditions on the average particle size and distributions, morphologies, and thermal properties to design microcapsules for the sustained release system was investigated.
Separation of soluble oil was investigated during filtration of cutting oil emulsion using various commercial ultrafiltration membranes. The surface properties of membranes used were hydrophilic hydrophobic and modified surfaces by various surfactant pretreatments. Conditions varied include stirring speed transmeembrane pressure membrane type and surfactant type for pretreatment. The results give some indication of mechanisms occurring at the membrane surface. Surfactant pretreatments significantly improved water flux and UF flux of hydrophilic regenerated cellulose(up to 2.4x for YM100) and hydrophobic polysulfone (up to 2.2x for PTHK) membranes depending on surfactant type and operating conditions. The UF flux enhancement was attributed to membrane swelling and reduction of interfacial surface tension between oil droplets and membrane surface. unexpectedly the hydrophilic membranes revealed greater flux enhancement than the hydrophobic membranes. The results also showed a greater improvement in UF flux at lower operating pressure.
