  • Two NbCx-C1-x/Y2O3/Ti sputter-coated Al2O3 substrates (L 5.5 cm$\times$W 0.5 cm) were diffusion bonded together using hot press method at 95$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours under 1 MPa of applied pressure. 4 points bending tests were used to evaluate the mechanical performance of these precracked laminate beams. Two types of mechanical responses were observed: crack penetration through the interface for x=0.75, 1 and crack deflection into an interface for x=0.25, 0.5. The Al2O3/NbCx-C1-x/Y2O3/Ti system suggested here has been proves to be effective for the thermokinetical stability and tailorability of the interfaces of Al2O3/Ti composites at 95$0^{\circ}C$.

  • This study deals with the mechanical properties of STS304-Al351 friction welding zone. Main results are as follows ; under the condition of upset pressure 75MPa, the tensile strength of STS304-al6351 friction weld interface was higher than that of Al6351 base metal, and the highest tensile strength(290MPa) was obtained at upset pressure 125MPa. The hardness profile across the weld interface shows that the hardness of both STS304 and Al6351 is higher around the weld interface, and sharply increased hardness on the STS304 side is related with the plastic deformation of micro volume. As the result of analyzing the tensile fracture, it showed perfect soft fracture.

  • Recently, new functionally graded material(FGM) that has a spatial variation in composition and properties is developed because of its good quality. This material yields the demands for resistance to corrosion and high temperature in turbine blade, wear resistance as in gears and high strength machine parts. Especially coating treatment in FGM surface brings forth a mechanical weak at the interface due to discontinuous stress resulting from a steep material change. It often, leads cracks or spallation in a coating area around an interface. The behavior of propagation cracks in FGMs was here investigated. The interface stresses were reduced because of graded material properties. Also graded material parameter with exponential equation was founded to influence the stress intensity factor. And the resistance curve with FGM coating was slightly increased.

  • Using current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements, the electrical properties of Au and Cu Schottky contacts to n-Ge were comparatively investigated. Lower values of barrier height, ideality factor and series resistance were obtained for the Au contact as compared to the Cu contact. The values of capacitance showed strong dependence on the bias voltage and the frequency. The presence of an inversion layer at the interface might reduce the intercept voltage at the voltage axis, lowering the barrier height for C-V measurements, especially at lower frequencies. In addition, a higher interface state density was observed for the Au contact. The generation of sputter deposition-induced defects might occur more severely for the Au contact; these defects affected both the I-V and C-V characteristics.

  • The electrical properties of metallic junction diodes and metallic source/drain (S/D) Schottky barrier metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (SB-MOSFET) were simulated. By using the abrupt metallic junction at the S/D region, the short-channel effects in nano-scaled MOSFET devices can be effectively suppressed. Particularly, the effects of trap states at the metal-silicide/silicon interface of S/D junction were simulated by taking into account the tail distributions and the Gaussian distributions at the silicon band edge and at the silicon midgap, respectively. As a result of device simulation, the reduction of interfacial trap states with Gaussian distribution is more important than that of interfacial trap states with tail distribution for improving the metallic junction diodes and SB-MOSFET. It is that a forming gas annealing after silicide formation significantly improved the electrical properties of metallic junction devices.

  • A leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) velocity was measured using a scanning acoustic microscope on the ceramic/metal interface in order to investigate material properties. The inverse Fourier transform (IFFT) of the V(z) curve contains the reflectance function of a liquid-specimen interface. So, the longitudinal, transverse, and Rayleigh wave velocities for each layer are obtained by the inversion of the V(z) curve at the same time. This paper contains mainly the experimental procedure for measurements of the LSAW velocity, and the results obtained for the velocity variation of individual layer after the thermal shock. It is shown that this method is useful in measuring the material properties under external stress.

  • Solid state diffusion bonding is the joining process performed by creep and diffusion, which is accelerated by heating below melting temperature and proper pressing, in vacuum or shielding gas atmosphere. By this process we can obtain sufficient joint which can't be expected from the fusion welding. For Ti-6Al-4V alloy, the optimum solid state diffusion bonding condition and mechanical properties of the joint were found, and micro void morphology at bond interface was observed by SEM. The results of tensile test showed sufficient joint, whose mechanical properties are similar to that of base metal. 850$^{\circ}$C, 3MPa is considered as the optimum bonding condition. Void morphology at interface is long and flat at the initial stage. As the percentage of bonded area increases, however, small and round voids are found. Variation of void shape can be explained as follows. As for the void shrinkage mechanism, at the initial stage, power law creep is the dominant, but diffusion mechanism is dominant when the percentage of bonded area is increased.

  • Shear properties of geosynthetic/geosynthetic and geosynthetic/soil were evaluated from direct shear tests. The type of geosynthetic is Velcro which is effective for geosynthetic interface and make up for the weakness of sandbag. In this study, the cohesion and the angle of internal friction of each interface was estimated. The test results showed that the cohesion and the angle of internal friction of the geosynthetics depended on the amount of normal stress, the type of the geosynthetics used, and combinations of the geosynthetics and soils. Finally, by comparing the apparent cohesion and the friction angle of the geosynthetics, the applicability to design was identified.

  • Geotextile containers for restoration of slopes form the interface between the containers during the restored to lost slopes, and therefore the relation displacements are developed including the sliding on the surface. Since, the shear strength on these interfaces is less than that of fill material in the container, the characteristics of shear strength on the interface governs the behavior of the restoration slopes. In general, a lot of natural properties of geotexiles is required to evaluate the safty of the geotextiles, Among the properties, the shear characteristics between geotextiles and soil is a important variable to assess the safety. From the results of full scale direct shear test, the residual shear strength is recommanded to use for design factors since a large deformation possibly occures on the geotextile containers.

  • In this work, the effects of plasma treatment on surface properties of semi conductive silicone rubber were investigated in terms of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The adhesion characteristics of semiconductive-insulating interface layer of silicone rubber were studied by measuring the T-peel strengths. As a result, semiconductive silicone rubber surfaces treated with plasma discharge led to and increase in oxygen-containing functional groups, resulting in improving the degree of adhesion of the semiconductive-insulating interface layer of silicone rubber. these results are probably due to the modifications of surface functional groups or polar component of surface free energy of the semi conductive silicone rubber.
