  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of coadministration and 3 days-pretreatmemt of niledipine (2, 10 mg/kg) on the pharmacokinetic parameters and bioavailability of paclitaxel (50 mg/kg) after oral administration in rats. Coadministration of nifedipine with paclitaxel did alter the $C_{max}$ (115${\pm}$29 ng/ml without nifedipine; 135${\pm}$35 ng/ml with nifedipine (10 mg/kg): p<0.05) and AUC (188${\pm}$459 ng/mlㆍhr with-out nifedipine; 2546${\pm}$642 ng/mlㆍhr with nifedipine; p<0.05). Three days treatment of nifedipine on the prior to paclitaxel administration increased the $t_{1/2}$ 〔9.90${\pm}$2.47 hr without nifedipine; 12.37${\pm}$3.12 hr with nifedipine (2 mg/kg): 12.83${\pm}$3.32 hr with nifedipine (10 mg/ml); p<0.05] and AUC [1833${\pm}$459 ng/mlㆍhr without nifedipine; 2663${\pm}$648 ng/mlㆍhr with nifedipine (2 mg/kg): 3006${\pm}$734 ng/mlㆍhr with nifedipine (10 mg/ml): p <0.05]. Drug interaction between nifedipine and paclitaxel decreased the elimination rate constant and increased the oral bioavailability of paclitaxel. On the basis of the results of this study, it might be considered that nifedip ine may inhibit cytochrome P450, which are engaged in paclitaxel metabolism, result in increased $t_{1/2}$ and AUC of paclitaxel. However, further study should be conducted to clarify the roles of cytochrome P450 and P-glycoprotein on paclitaxel bio-availability wit/or without nifedipine.

  • Thermodynamics of carbon in manganese alloy melts is important in manufacturing low carbon ferromanganese and silico-manganese alloys. In order to predict the carbon solubility in liquid $Mn-Si-Fe-C_{sat}$ alloys as a function of melt composition and temperature, thermodynamic interactions among carbon, silicon and iron in carbon saturated liquid manganese should be known. In the present study, the effects of silicon and iron on the carbon solubility in Mn-Si, Mn-Fe and Mn-Si-Fe melts were measured in the temperature range from 1673 to 1773 K. The carbon solubility decreases significantly as silicon and iron contents increase in liquid manganese alloy. The interaction parameters among carbon, silicon and iron in carbon saturated liquid manganese were determined from the carbon solubility data and the Lupis' relation for the interaction coefficient at constant activity.

  • Oscillating heat release associated with periodic vortex-flame interaction was investigated experimentally. Turbulent jet flames were stabilized with recirculating hot products in a dump combustor, and large-scale periodic vortices were imposed into the jet flame by acoustic forcing. Forcing frequencies and operating parameters were adjusted to simulate unstable combustor operation in practical combustors. The objectives were to characterize vortex-heat release interaction that leads to unwanted heat release fluctuations and to identify the proper fuel injection pattern that could be used for actively suppressing such fluctuations. Phase-resolved CH* chemiluminescence and schlieren images were used as diagnostic tools. The results were compared at corresponding phases of vortex shedding cycle.

  • One-dimensional soil-column studies were carried out to understand the interaction of three industrial effluents namely amino acid ('highly acidic'), surfactant ('highly organic') and pharmaceutical ('organic and toxic') on the physicochemical behavior, index properties and shear strength of bentonite due to artificial contamination extending to nearly 300 days. Changes in inorganic and organic pollutants present in the effluents due to the interaction of the above effluents and soil were assessed to understand the physico-chemical behaviour. Batch and continuous modes of operation, 8 hrs and 16 hrs Hydraulic Retention Time [HRT] and 25%, 50% concentrations of effluents, were the parameters considered. Amino acid, surfactant and pharmaceutical effluents have shown a high variation in pH (7 to 8) after artificial contamination on bentonite that is their original characteristics of the above effluents have been completely reversed. Further, it is found that the shear strength of bentonite has reduced by about 20%, and with respect to liquid limit and plastic limit shows an increasing trend with time within the period of contamination.

  • The study deals with the physical modeling of a typical single storeyed building frame resting on pile foundation and embedded in cohesive soil mass using the finite element based software SAP-IV. Two groups of piles comprising two and three piles, with series and parallel arrangement thereof, are considered. The slab provided at top and bottom of the frame along with the pile cap is idealized as four noded and two dimensional thin shell elements. The beams and columns of the frame, and piles are modeled using two noded one dimensional beam-column element. The soil is modeled using closely spaced discrete linear springs. A parametric study is carried out to investigate the effect of various parameters of the pile foundation, such as spacing in a group and number of piles in a group, on the response of superstructure. The response considered includes the displacement at the top of the frame and bending moment in columns. The soil-structure interaction effect is found to increase the displacement in the range of 38 -133% and to increase the absolute maximum positive and negative moments in the column in the range of 2-12% and 2-11%. The effect of the soil- structure interaction is observed to be significant for the type of foundation and soil considered in this study. The results obtained are compared further with those of Chore et al. (2010), wherein different idealizations were used for modeling the superstructure frame and sub-structure elements (foundation). While fair agreement is observed in the results in either study, the trend of the results obtained in both studies is also same.

  • The purpose of this study is to design an authoring tool and a corresponding device for an olfactory display that can augment the immersion and reality in broadcasting services. The developed authoring tool allows an olfactory display to be properly synchronized with the existing video service by applying the standardized format using ISO/IEC 23005 (MPEG-V) and the corresponding developed scent display device. To propose the proper data format for the olfactory display, we have analyzed both the multimodal combination and the cross-modality related to the olfactory display. From the results of the analysis, we derived a set of olfactory parameters for the olfactory display that are related to emotion. The analyzed parameters related to emotion in an olfactory display are synchronization, scent intensity, scent persistence, and hedonic tone. These parameters should be controlled so that the olfactory display can be in harmony with the existing media to augment emotion. In addition, we developed a scent display device that can generate many kinds of scents and that satisfies design conditions for olfactory parameters that are for use with broadcasting services.

  • As an alternative of conventional prestressed concrete (PSC) girders, various types of PSC girders are being developed and applied in bridge structures. Incrementally prestressed concrete girder is one of these newly developed girders. According to design concept, these new types of PSC girders have considerable advantages to reduce their self-weight and make spans longer. However, dynamic interaction between bridge superstructures and passing trains would be sometimes one of critical issues in these more flexible railway bridges. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate modal parameters of newly designed bridges before conducting dynamic analyses. In the present paper, a 25 meters long full scale PSC girder was fabricated as a test specimen and modal testing was carried out to evaluate modal parameters including natural frequencies and modal damping ratios at every prestressing stage. In the modal testing, a digitally controlled vibration exciter as well as an impact hammer is applied to obtain frequency response functions more exactly and the modal parameters are evaluated varying with construction stages. Prestressed force effects on changes of modal parameters are analyzed at every incremental prestressing stage.

  • This article aims to apply a friction stir spot welding for producing a lap joint of AA1100 aluminum alloy and SGACD zinc coated steel. The experiment was designed by MINITAB and then investigated the relation among the friction spot joint parameters. The experimental results are as follows. The friction spot joining could successively produce the lap joint of AA1100 aluminum alloy and SGACD zinc coated steel. Interaction between the rotate speed, the hold time and the tool insert speed affected to vary the tensile shear strength of the lap joint. The prediction of the optimized welding parameters that indicated the tensile shear strength of 1966 N was the rotated speed of 4000 rpm, the pin hold time of 6 sec, the pin insert rate of 6 mm/min with the S/N ratio of 66.56 that was higher than that of the total mean S/N ratio. The practical experiment of the predicted welding parameters indicated the tensile shear strength of 2165 N and had the S/N ratio of 66.70 that was higher than the predicted tensile shear strength.

  • The complexes [Pd(bpy)(Hex-dtc)]$NO_3$ and [Pt(bpy)(Hex-dtc)]$NO_3$ (bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine and Hex-dtc is hexyldithiocarbamato ligands) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic studies. The cytotoxicity assay of the complexes has been performed on chronic myelogenous leukemia cell line, K562, at micromolar concentration. Both complexes showed cytotoxic activity far better than that of cisplatin under the same experimental conditions. The binding parameters of the complexes with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) was investigated using UV-visible and fluorescence techniques. They show the ability of cooperatively intercalating in CT-DNA. Gel filtration studies demonstrated that platinum complex could cleave the DNA. In the interaction studies between the Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes with CT-DNA, several binding and thermodynamic parameters have been determined, which may provide deeper insights into the mechanism of action of these types of complexes with nucleic acids.

  • The stability of turbulent nonpremixed interacting flames is investigated in terms of nozzle configuration shapes and kind of fuels. Four nozzle arrangements - cross 5, matrix 8, matrix 9 and circle 8 nozzles - are used in the experiment. There are many parameters affecting flame stability in multi-nozzle flames such as nozzle separation distance, fuel flowrates and nozzle configuration etc. Key factors to enhance blowout limit are the nozzle configuration and the existence of center nozzle. Even nozzle exit velocity equal 204 m/s, flame is not extinguished when there is not a center nozzle and s/d=15.3∼27.6 in matrix-8 and circular-8 configurations. At these conditions, recirculation of burnt gas is related with stability augmentation. Fuel mole fraction measurements using laser induced fluorescence reveal lifted flame base is not located at the stoichiometric contour.
