  • We developed the carbon fabric/EPDM chamber insulation in order to protect motor case with high intensity gas flow. A six-inch simulation motor connected with extension tube was designed to test ablation characteristic of insulation. High intensity gas flow was induced by a FRP disc with hole between motor and extension tube. After ground test, ablation depth of the carbon fabric/EPDM insulation was decreased compared to another insulations after ground static test.

  • Evacuated powder insulations have long been known to have better thermal performance than existing commercially available insulators, such as fiber glass and CFC-blown foam. To make a composite powder panel, a series of individually evacuated panels was encapsulated in a rigid closed cell foam matrix. The panels were encapsulated in a thin glass sheet barrier to preserve the vacuum. The thermal conductivity of the individual panel was found to be $0.0062W/m^{\circ}K$ by experiment and the polyurethane foam above had a thermal conductivity of $0.024W/m^{\circ}K$. In this study, numerical analysis using finite element method was carried out to investigate insulation performance of rigid foam/evacuated powder composite panel with respect to panel geometries such as panel pitch, panel aspect ratio and panel area ratio. Numerical analysis has indicated that more optimal vacuum panel geometries, much lower overall thermal conductivities can be achieved.

  • A 1 MVA transformer with BSCCO-2223 high Tc superconducting (HTS) tapes was designed. The rated voltages of each sides of the transformer are 22.0 kV and 6.6 kV respectively. Double pancake HTS windings, which have advantages of insulations and distribution of high voltage, were adopted. Four HTS tapes were wound in parallel fer the windings of low voltage side. Each winding was composed of several double pancake windings made of four parallel conductors were transposed in order to distribute the currents equally in each conductor. A core of the transformer was designed as a shell type core made of laminated silicon steel plate and the core is separated with the windings by a cryostat with a room temperature bore. The operating temperature of HTS windings will be 65K with liquid nitrogen, and a cooling system using a cryocooler was proposed and designed conceptually. This HTS transformer is going to be manufactured in near future based on the design parameters presented in this paper.

  • The present paper is concerned to the thermal analysis during the cool-down period of 138,000 m$^3$class GTT MARK-III membrane type LNG carrier servicing with LNG from the Middle East to Korea. It is the cool-down period that cools the insulation wall and the gas in LNG tank to avoid the thermal shock as the start of loading of -162$^{\circ}C$ LNG. For six hours of the standard cool-down period, the temperature of NG falls down from -4$0^{\circ}C$ to -13$0^{\circ}C$ and especially the mean temperature of the 1st barrier in the top side insulation wall falls down from -38.38$^{\circ}C$ to -122.42$^{\circ}C$ in case of IMO design condition. By the 3-D numerical calculation about the cargo tank and the cofferdam, the temperature variation in hulls and insulations is precisely predicted in this paper. And the mean temperature variation of gas is calculated as the function of the spraying rate by the heat balance model during the cool-down period.

  • Housing is demanded to convert simple dwelling space into delightful one by improving of standard of living by economic development It is interested in the impact noise of the apartment housing that is revised to housing construction criteria at 29 March 2005 and then regulated the level of floor impact noise by the rule. The plan, which is actively investigated by counterplan for the reduction of impact noise, is application of sound insulation. In generally, first target by using insulation is the reduction of floor thermal transmittance in floor heating system of apartment housing. It is recently proposed soft materials that reduce the impact noise. However, it is a fact that the application of soft sound insulation includes some problem about structural performance. In this study, we made wet-heating specimen with various sound insulations, and carried out structralexperiment for evaluating the structural safety of it.

  • This paper aims to experimentally investigate the fire resistance of U-shaped hybrid composite beams protected by spay and paint insulations. Subjected to two and three hours of the Standard ISO fire, the flexural performance of 4.4m beams with/without imposed loadings was examined with respect to failure criteria such as deflection and deflection rate of the mid-span and temperatures measured in the steel section. The results demonstrated that the proposed configuration of the composite beam is able to achieve a very competitive 3-hour fire resistance rating in economical aspects.

  • The radial slot configuration in the solid propellant grain is usually fabricated by the polyurethane foam slot former The foam cannot be easily removed from the solid propellant, some can remain in the slot. Analogue solid propellant rocket motors using polyurethane foam to shape the slot are static fired with the foam former still in place in the slot. The pressure increases at the slot part are measured and there are indications of the propellant cracks at the insulations above the slot. The pressure increase is produced at the beginning of the burning sequence as the foam will hinder the combustion gas of the burning propellant from flowing into the central bore. The pressure increase up to about 300psi is predicted for the motor tested and this pressure increase depends on the gap between the propellant and foam surfaces and remaining foam volume. This amount of pressure increase inside of the slot is estimated to cause the propellant crack. To prevent this pressure increase, minimizing the foam remainder in the slot and making sufficient chamfering at the comer of the slot entrance are suggested.

  • Energy loss from windows accounts for large scores of heating and cooling loads also in energy saving apartments that is reduced over 30% of total energy consumption. Movable reflective insulations, insulation shutters, blinds, insulated shades are used to reduce energy loads from windows. In this study, energy saving performance of insulated shades was simulated by control methods. According to installation of insulated shades, heating loads were decreased about 10.5~11.3%, and cooling loads are decreased about 29.1~38.3% on an energy saving apartment. The heating peak load was reduced about 9.5% by insulated shades and the cooling peak load was reduced about 25.7~31.5%. In the case of insulated shades with automatic control system, simple time schedule control system would be more efficient than outdoor detection control system that should use several sensors.

  • This study aimed to examine whether heat curing methods of concrete subjected to $-10^{\circ}C$ could be effective by varying the combination of heating cable and surface heat insulations. Three different concrete specimens incorporating 30% fly ash with 50% W/B were fabricated to simulate wall, column and slab members with dimensions of $1600{\times}800{\times}200$ mm for slab, $800{\times}600{\times}200$ mm for wall and $800{\times}800{\times}800$ mm for column. For heat curing combinations, Type-1 specimens applied PE film for slab, plywood for wall and column curing. Type-2 specimens applied double layer bubble sheet (2LB) and heating coil for slab, and 50 mm styrofoam for wall and column curing. Type-3 specimen applied 2LB for slab, electrical heating mat for wall and column inside heating enclosure. The test results revealed that the temperature of Type 1 specimen dropped below $0^{\circ}C$ beginning at 48 hours after placement due to its poor heat insulating capability. Type 2 and 3 specimens maintained a temperature of around $5{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ after placement due to favorable heat insulating and thermal resistance.
