Implementation of Polymeric Thermo-optic Modulator using a New Vertical Asymmetric Optical Coupler (새로운 수직형 비대칭 광 결합구조를 이용한 폴리머 열광학 변조기 구현)

  • We newly proposed a polymer based vertical asymmetric optical coupler, which was characterized by simple fabricating procedure and short coupling length. And we fabricated a thermo-optic modulator using the polymeric optical coupler. We optimized the proposed device by coupling characteristic analysis. In a TE polarized 1.33${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ wavelength, we obtained very short coupling length(L=277.6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) with 0.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness of middle layer, high coupling efficiency(94%), and asymmetric vertical waveguides with n$_{u}$ = 1.522, n$_{l}$ = 1.51. We implemented vortical asymmetric thermo-optic modulator with lower inverted rib waveguide and upper slab waveguide. In the 600Hz bandwidth and 4.5㎽ input power, the extinction ratio of the mode was 17㏈ with an insertion loss of 4.5㏈.

The Effects of $SiN_x$ Dielectric Thin Films on SAW Properties of the High Frequency SAW Filter for Cellular Communication System ($SiN_x$유전 보호막이 이동통신용 고주파 SAW필터의 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • High frequency SAW filters for cellular communications were fabricated by metallizing 36$^{\circ}$Y-X LiTaO$_3$piezoelectric substrate with IIDT type electrodes. It was found that the center frequency of the filter was lowered than as designed. In order to overcome such a drawback and enable a fine tuning of its center frequency, dielectric SiN$_{x}$ thin films were deposited on LiTaO$_3$substrate by PECVD as passivation layer and then frequency responses were also characterized. As a result, the center frequency of the filter could be shifted to a higher frequency with increasing the thickness of SiN$_{x}$ film, because SAW velocity increased with increasing the ratio of the thickness of dielectric thin film to wavelength. The insertion loss of the filter, however, became larger with increasing the thickness of SiN$_{x}$ film.

  • $CoSb_3$-based skutterudite compounds are candidate materials for thermoelectric power generation in the mid-temperature range (600 - 900 K) because their thermoelectric properties can be enhanced by doping and filling. The joining property of thermoelectric module electrodes containing thermoelectric materials is of great importance because it can dominate the efficiency of the thermoelectric module. This study examined the properties of $CoSb_3$/Al/Ti/CuMo joined by the spark plasma sintering technique. Titanium thin foil was used to prevent the diffusion of copper into $CoSb_3$ and Aluminum thin foil was used to improve the adhesion between $CoSb_3$ and Ti. The insertion of an Aluminum interlayer between the Ti and $CoSb_3$ was effective for joining $CoSb_3$ to Ti by forming an intermediate layer at the Al-$CoSb_3$ boundary without any micro cracks. Specifically, the adhesion strength of the Ti/Al/$CoSb_3$ joining interface showed a remarkable improvement compared with our previous results, without deterioration of electrical property in the interface.

A study for implementation of ultrasonic transducer in the prostate cancer hyperthermia (전립선암의 온열치료를 위한 초음파변환기 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The ultrasonic hyperthermia for oncology has been developed and studied. The HIFU(high intensity focused ultrasound) is the most recent method to treat the tumor by using ultrasound. In this study, an insertion-type transducer for treating a prostate cancer, which can focus the ultrasonic beam mechanically and electrically, was designed and developed. The developed transducer was composed of three arrays, and each array has 32 elements. For the purpose of the mechanical focusing, both side arrays are slanted to the center array by $15^{\circ}$. With this structure, NFL(near field length) was set up as 30 mm. The PZT-4 and two matching layers were used, and the backing layer was excepted to prevent energy losses. The acoustic field analysis and the heating test were performed to evaluate the performance of developed transducer. The shape of an acoustic field, peak pressure, and acoustic pressure distribution were compared with numerical simulation. The NFL was 32 mm, the beam width was 5 mm, focal area was $40\;mm^2$, and peak pressure was 5.5 MPa. With heating by using developed transducer, the temperature increased up to $33^{\circ}C$ at focal zone. As a result of this study, the usefulness of suggested transducer for prostate cancer hyperthermia was confirmed by the acoustic field analysis and the heating test with TMM(tissue mimicking) phantom.

  • Passive Device는 RF Circuit을 제작할 때 많은 면적을 차지하고 있으며 이를 감소시키기 위해 여러 연구가 진행되고 있다. 최근 SoP-L 공정을 이용한 많은 연구가 진행되고 있는데 PCB 제작에 이용되는 일반적인 재료와 공정을 그대로 이용함으로써 개발 비용과 시간 면에서 많은 장점을 가지기 때문이다. SoP-L의 또 하나 장점은 다층구조를 만들기가 용이하다는 점이다. 각 층 간에는 Via를 사용하여 연결하게 되는데, RF Circuit은 회로의 구조와 물성에 따라 특성이 결정되며, 그만큼 Via를 썼을 때 그 영향을 생각해야 한다. 본 연구에서는 multi-layer LCP substrate에 다수의 Via를 chain 구조로 형성하여 전기적 특성을 확인하였다. Via가 70um 두께의 substrate를 관통하면서 상층과 하층의 Conductor을 연속적으로 연결하게 된다. 이 구조의 Resistance와 Insertion Loss를 측정하여, Via의 크기 별 수율과 평균적인 Resistance, RF 계측기로 재현성을 확인하였다. 이를 바탕으로 공정에서의 안정성을 확보하고 Via의 크기와 도금방법에 의한 RF Circuit에서의 영향을 파악하여, 앞으로의 RF Device 개발에 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다. 특히 유기물을 이용한 다층구조의 고주파 RF Circuit에 Via를 적용할 때의 영향을 설계에서부터 고려할 수 있는 자료가 될 것이다.

Quantitative cone-beam computed tomography evaluation of hard and soft tissue thicknesses in the midpalatal suture region to facilitate orthodontic mini-implant placement

  • Objective: To identify the most favorable sites that optimize the initial stability and survival rate of orthodontic mini-implants, this study measured hard and soft tissue thicknesses in the median and paramedian regions of the palate using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and determined possible sex- and age-related differences in these thicknesses. Methods: The study sample comprised CBCT images of 189 healthy subjects. The sample was divided into four groups according to age. A grid area was set for the measurement of hard and soft tissue thicknesses in the palate. Vertical lines were marked at intervals of 0, 1.5, and 3.0 mm lateral to the midpalatal suture, while horizontal lines were marked at 2-mm intervals up to 24 mm from the posterior margin of the incisive foramen. Measurements were made at 65 points of intersection between the horizontal and vertical lines. Results: The palatal hard tissue thickness decreased from the anterior to the posterior region, with a decrease in the medial-to-lateral direction in the middle and posterior regions. While the soft tissue was rather thick around the lateral aspects of the palatal arch, it formed a constant layer that was only 1-2-mm thick throughout the palate. Statistically significant differences were observed according to sex and age. Conclusions: The anterolateral palate as well as the midpalatal suture seem to be the most favorable sites for insertion of orthodontic mini-implants. The thickness of the palate differed by age and sex; these differences should be considered while planning the placement of orthodontic mini-implants.

Millimeter-wave LTCC Front-end Module for Highly Integrated Transceiver (고집적 송수신기를 위한 밀리미터파 LTCC Front-end 모듈)

  • In this paper, design and implementation of a very compact and cost effective front-end module are presented for IEEE 802.16 FWA(fixed Wireless Access) in the 40 GHz band. A multi-layer LTCC(Low Temperature Co-fred Ceramic) technology with cavity process to achieve excellent electrical performances is used to fabricate the front-end module. The wirebond matching circuit design of switch input/output port and waveguide transition to connect antenna are optimally designed to keep transmission loss low. To reduce the size of the front-end module, the dielectric waveguide filter is developed instead of the metal waveguide filter. The LTCC is composed of 6 layers(with the thickness of a layer of 100 um) having a relative dielectric constant of 7.1. The front-end module is implemented in a volume of $30{\times}7{\times}0.8mm^3$ and shows an overall insertion loss < 5.3 dB, and image rejection value > 49 dB.

  • We observe the change of coercivity and exchange bias, depending on inserting material and thickness in a [Pd(0.6 nm)/$Co(0.2)]_5$/ FeMn(10) multilayer structure with perpendicular anisotropy. When 0.78 and 1.28 nm thick NiFe substitutes for Co in a $[Pd(0.6 nm)Co(0.2)]_4$/Pd(0.6)/NiFe(t)/FeMn(10) structure, we obtain the exchange bias of 360 Oe. In addition, when $Co_8Fe_2$ and $Co_9Fe_1$ are inserted for Co/FeMn interface, we obtain the exchange bias of 380 nm for a 0.68 nm thick $Co_8Fe_2$ and 580 Oe for a 0.52 nm thick $Co_9Fe_1$.

  • Recently, flash memory is used to store data in mobile computing devices such as PDAs, SmartCards, mobile phones and MP3 players. These devices need index structures like the B-tree to efficiently support some operations like insertion, deletion and search. The BFTL(B-tree Flash Translation Layer) technique was first introduced which is for implementing the B-tree on flash memory. Flash memory has characteristics that a write operation is more costly than a read operation and an overwrite operation is impossible. Therefore, the BFTL method focuses on minimizing the number of write operations resulting from building the B-tree. However, we indicate in this paper that there are many rooms of improving the performance of the I/O cost in building the B-tree using this method and it is not practical since it increases highly the usage of the SRAM memory storage. In this paper, we propose a BOF(the B-tree On Flash memory) approach for implementing the B-tree on flash memory efficiently. The core of this approach is to store index units belonging to the same B-tree node to the same sector on flash memory in case of the replacement of the buffer used to build the B-tree. In this paper, we show that our BOF technique outperforms the BFTL or other techniques.

Fabrication of Thick Silicon Dioxide Air-Bridge and Coplanar Waveguide for RF Application Using Complex Oxidation Process and MEMS Technology (복합 산화법과 MEMS 기술을 이용한 RF용 두꺼운 산화막 에어 브리지 및 공면 전송선의 제조)

  • This paper proposes a $10\;{\mu}m$ thick oxide air-bridge structure which can be used as a substrate for RF circuits. The structure was fabricated by anodic reaction, complex oxidation and micromachining technology using TMAH etching. High quality films were obtained by combining low temperature thermal oxidation ($500^{\circ}C$, 1 hr at $H_2O/O_2$) and rapid thermal oxidation (RTO) process ($1050^{\circ}C$, 2 min). This structure is mechanically stable because of thick oxide layer up to $10\;{\mu}m$ and is expected to solve the problem of high dielectric loss of silicon substrate in RF region. The properties of the transmission line formed on the oxidized porous silicon (OPS) air-bridge were investigated and compared with those of the transmission line formed on the OPS layers. The insertion loss of coplanar waveguide (CPW) on OPS air-bridge was (about 2dB) lower than that of CPW on OPS layers. Also, the return loss of CPW on OPS air-bridge was less than about -20 dB at measured frequency region for 2.2 mm. Therefore, this technology is very promising for extending the use of CMOS circuitry to higher RF frequencies.
