  • Evaporative humidification using a humidifying element is used widely for the humidification of a building or a data center. The performance of a humidifying element is commonly expressed as the humidification efficiency, which is assumed to be independent of the air temperature or humidity. To verify this assumption, a series of tests were conducted under two air conditions - data center ($25^{\circ}C$ DBT, $15^{\circ}C$ WBT) and commercial building ($35^{\circ}C$ DBT, $21^{\circ}C$ WBT) - using humidifying elements made from cellulose/PET and changing the frontal air velocity from 1.0 m/s to 4.5 m/s. Three samples having a 100 mm, 200 mm, or 300 mm depth were tested. The results showed that the humidification efficiency is dependent on the air condition. Indeed, even dehumidification occurred at the inlet of the humidifying element at the air condition of commercial building. This suggests that a proper thermal model should account for the inlet area, where the amount of moisture transfer may be different from the other part of the humidification element. As the depth of the element increased from 100 mm to 200 mm, the humidification efficiency increased by 29%. With further increases to 300 mm, it increased by 42%. On the other hand, the pressure drop also increased by 47% and 86%.

  • In this study, the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics within sandwich panels are investigated using computational fluid dynamics. Within the sandwich panels having periodic cellular cores, air can freely move inside the core section so that the structure is able to perform multi-functional roles such as simultaneous load bearing and heat dissipation. Thus, there needs to examine the thermal and flow analysis with respect to design variables and various conditions. In this regard, ANSYS Fluent was utilized to explore the flow and heat transfer within the pyramidal truss sandwich structures by varying the truss angle and inlet velocity. Without the entry effect in the first unitcell, the constant rate of pressure and the constant rate of Nusselt number was observed. As a result, it was demonstrated that Nusselt number increases and friction factor decreases as the inlet velocity increases. Moreover, the rate of Nusselt number and friction factor was appreciable in the range of V=1-5m/s due to the transition from laminar to turbulent flow. Regarding the effect of design variable, the variation of truss angle did not significantly influence the characteristics.

  • In the membrane process, it is important to improve water treatment efficiency to ensure water quality and minimize membrane fouling. In this study, a pilot study of membrane process using reservoir water was conducted for a long time to secure high flux operation technology capable of responding to influent turbidity changes. The raw water and DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) treated water were used for influent water of membrane to analyze the effect of water quality on the TMP (Trans Membrane Pressure) and to optimize the membrane operation. When the membrane flux were operated at 70 LMH and 80 LMH under stable water quality conditions with an inlet turbidity of 10 NTU or less, the TMP increase rates were 0.28 and 0.24 kPa/d, respectively, with minor difference. When the membrane with high flux of 80 LMH was operated for a long time under inlet turbidity of 10 NTU or more, the TMP increase rate showed the maximum of 43.5 kPa/d. However, when the CEB(Chemically Enhanced Backwash) cycle was changed from 7 to 1 day, it was confirmed that the TMP increase rate was stable to 0.23 kPa/d. As a result of applying pre-treatment process(DAF) on unstability water quality conditions, it was confirmed that the TMP rise rates differed by 0.17 and 0.64 kPa/d according to the optimization of the coagulant injection. When combined with coagulation pretreatment, it was thought that the balance with the membrane process was more important than the emphasis on efficiency of the pretreatment process. It was considered that stable TMP can be maintained by optimizing the cleaning conditions when the stable or unstable water quality even in the high flux operation on membrane process.

  • Showerhead is used as a main part in the semiconductor equipment. The face plate flatness should remain constant and the cleaning performance must be gained to keep the uniformity level of etching or deposition in chemical vapor deposition process. High operating temperature or long period of thermal loading could lead the showerhead to be deformed thermally. In some case, the thermal deformation appears very sensitive to showerhead performance. This paper describes the methods for robust design using computational fluid dynamics. To reveal the influence of the post distribution on flow pattern in the showerhead cavity, numerical simulation was performed for several post distributions. The flow structure appears similar to an impinging flow near a centered baffle in showerhead cavity. We took the structure as an index to estimate diffusion path. A robust design to reduce the thermal deformation of showerhead can be achieved using post number increase without ill effect on flow. To prevent the showerhead deformation by heat loading, its face plate thickness was determined additionally using numerical simulation. The face plate has thousands of impinging holes. The design key is to keep pressure drop distribution on the showerhead face plate with the holes. This study reads the methodology to apply to a showerhead hole design. A Hagen-Poiseuille equation gives the pressure drop in a fluid flowing through such hole. The assumptions of the equation are the fluid is viscous-incompressible and the flow is laminar fully developed in a through hole. An equation can be expressed with radius R and length L related to the volume flow rate Q from the Hagen-Poiseuille equation, $Q={\pi}R4{\Delta}p/8{\mu}L$, where ${\mu}$ is the viscosity and ${\Delta}p$ is the pressure drop. In present case, each hole has steps at both the inlet and the outlet, and the fluid appears compressible. So we simplify the equation as $Q=C(R,L){\Delta}p$. A series of performance curves for a through hole with geometric parameters were obtained using two-dimensional numerical simulation. We obtained a relation between the hole diameter and hole length from the test cases to determine hole diameter at fixed hole length. A numerical simulation has been performed as a tool for enhancing showerhead robust design from flow structure. Geometric parameters for the design were post distribution and face plate thickness. The reinforced showerhead has been installed and its effective deposition profile is being shown in factory.

  • Important operation parameters and performance of a high temperature ceramic candle filter system were evaluated through a series of demonstration tests at a pilot-scale vitrification plant. At the initial period of each test, due to the growth of dust cake on the surface of ceramic candles, the pressure drop across the filter media increased sharply. After that it became stable to a certain range and varied continuously proportion to the face velocity of off-gas. On the contrary, at the initial period of each test, the permeability of filter element decreased rapidly and then it became stable. Back flushing of the filter system was effective under the back flushing air pressure range of 3∼5 bar. Based on the dust concentrations measured by iso-kinetic dust sampling at the inlet and outlet point of HTF, the dust collection efficiency of HTF evaluated. The result met the designed performance value of 99.9%. During the demonstration tests including a hundred hour long test, no specific failure or problem affecting the performance of HTF system were observed.

  • Responding to the increasing demand for research on seismic resistance of structures triggered by a large-scale earthquake in Korea, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety revised the typical application of the existing seismic design standards with the national seismic performance target enhanced. Therefore, in this paper, the dam body of the aged Test-Bed and the penstock with fluid were modeled by the three-dimensional finite element method by introducing several variables. The current seismic design standard law confirmed the safety of the dam structure and penstock against seismic waves. As a result of the 3D finite element analysis, the stress change due to the water impact of the penstock was minimal, and it was confirmed that the effect of the hydraulic pressure was more significant than the water impact in the earthquake situation. When the hydrostatic pressure is in the form of SPH, it was analyzed that the motion of the fluid and the location of stress caused by the earthquake can be effectively represented, and it will be easier to analyze the weak part. As a result of the analysis, which considers penstock's corrosion, the degree of stress dispersion gets smaller because the penstock is embedded in the body. The stress result is minimal, less than 1% of the yield stress of the steel. In addition, although there is a possibility of micro-tensile cracks occurring in the inlet of the dam, it has not been shown to have a significant effect on the stress increa.

  • The appropriate injection of H2O2 is essential to produce hydroxyl radicals (OH·) by mixing H2O2 quickly and exposing the resulting H2O2 solution to UV irradiation. This study focused on evaluating mixing device of H2O2 as a design factor of UV/H2O2 AOP pilot plant using a surface water. The experimental investigation involved both experimental and model-based analyses to evaluate the mixing effect of different devices available for the H2O2 injection of a tubular hollow pipe, elliptical type of inline mixer, and nozzle-type injection mixer. Computational fluid dynamics analysis was employed to model and simulate the mixing devices. The results showed that the elliptical type of inline mixer showed the highest uniformity of 95%, followed by the nozzle mixer with 83%, and the hollow pipe with only 18%, after passing through each mixing device. These results indicated that the elliptical type of inline mixer was the most effective in mixing H2O2 in a bulk. Regarding the pressure drops between the inlet and outlet of pipe, the elliptical-type inline mixer exhibited the highest pressure drop of 15.8 kPa, which was unfavorable for operation. On the other hand, the nozzle mixer and hollow pipe showed similar pressure drops of 0.4 kPa and 0.3 kPa, respectively. Experimental study showed that the elliptical type of inline and nozzle-type injection mixers worked well for low concentration (less than 5mg/L) of H2O2 injection within 10% of the input value, indicating that both mixers were appropriate for required H2O2 concentration and mixing intensity of UV/ H2O2 AOP process. Additionally, the elliptical-type inline mixer proved to be more stable than the nozzle-type injection mixer when dealing with highly concentrated pollutants entering the UV/H2O2 AOP process. It is recommended to use a suitable mixing device to meet the desired range of H2O2 concentration in AOP process.

  • Three prototype chestnut harvesters were constructed and evaluated their chestnut collection ability and field efficiency. Air-lock paddle system successfully picked up all loose material, and pick up efficiency was about 56 kg/h. Power required to operate this system was evaluated to be 8.7 kW with an air flow rate of $32.6\;m^3/min$. A radial blade type blower with 0.41 m impeller diameter was considered to be a minimum size for this system. For the auger system, air was sucked into the cylinder as the hinged flat cover began to be opened by the material pushed by the auger, and the empty burrs flew back to the container through the space between auger flights and collected in the bottom of the container. It was considered to add a device to prevent air from flowing back or to use the back flowing air for separation of burrs and nuts inside the container. The venturi system could not pick up chestnuts, as they only carried part way up to the suction hose. Consideration was given to an idea that the venturi could be used as a cleaning and separation mechanism for containers filled with both empty burrs and good nuts. A minimum vacuum of 129 mm wg was required to pick up chestnuts, and the corresponding inlet air velocity was 19.3 m/s. 104 mm of vacuum, which was about 81 % of that required for nuts, was enough to pick up burrs with nuts inside. Also, empty burrs with higher moisture content recorded the same pressure as for the burrs with nuts.

  • The paper presents the performance characteristics for a cooling system using EEV. The water cooler was used to reduce thermal deformation and contraction due to high speed of machine tools and the EEV was used for capacity control for water cooler. The apparatus was designed for hot-gas bypass system which a hot-gas can flows from outlet of compressor to the inlet of evaporator. This experiment is the intermediary study for precise temperature control through PID control. The results show that the evaporator pressure increased and refrigeration capacity decreased as the EEV opening step of hot-gas bypass increased. These results can be used as basic data for the design of effective water cooler.

  • The present paper describes a mathematical modeling and simulation of the separation of a solid rocket booster from an air breathing engine vehicle. The vehicle and booster are considered as a multi-connected body and the booster is assumed to move only along the axial direction of the vehicle. The dynamic motion of the vehicle and the booster were modeled by using Kane's method. The aerodynamic forces on the whole system along various positions of booster were calculated by using DATCOM software and the internal pressure force acting on the effective surface during separation was simply calculated with gas dynamics and Taylor MacColl equation. Numerical simulation was done by using Mathworks-Matlab. From the result, the variation of Mach number and angle of attack are not large during the separation, so the variation of pitch angle and the characteristics of inlet flow for varying the Mach number and angle of attack during the separation test can be identified as neglectable values.
