Aircraft needs an inlet duct to supply the airflow to engine face. A fighter aircraft that requires low radar observability has to hide the engine face in the fuselage to reduce the Radar Cross Section(RCS). Therefore, the flow path of the inlet duct is changed into S-shape. The performance of the aircraft engine is known to be influenced by the shape and the centerline curvature of the S-Duct. In this study, CFD analysis of the RAE M 2129 S-Duct has been performed to investigate the influence of aspect ratio of inlet geometry. The performance of the S-Duct is evaluated in terms of the distortion coefficient. To simulate the flow under adverse pressure gradient better, $k-{\omega}SST$ turbulence model is employed. The computational results are validated with the ARA experimental data. The secondary flow and the flow separation are observed for all computational cases, while the semi-circular geometry has been found to produce the best results.
Experimental data are presented which describe the effects of a combustor-level high free-stream turbulence on the near-wall flow structure and heat/mass transfer on the endwall of a linear high-turning turbine rotor cascade. The end wall flow structure is visualized by employing the partial- and total-coverage oil-film technique, and heat/mass transfer rate is measured by the naphthalene sublimation method. A turbulence generator is designed to provide a highly-turbulent flow which has free-stream turbulence intensity and integral length scale of 14.7% and 80mm, respectively, at the cascade entrance. The surface flow visualizations show that the high free-stream turbulence has little effect on the attachment line, but alters the separation line noticeably. Under high free-stream turbulence, the incoming near-wall flow upstream of the adjacent separation lines collides more obliquely with the suction surface. A weaker lift-up force arising from this more oblique collision results in the narrower suction-side corner vortex area in the high turbulence case. The high free-stream turbulence enhances the heat/mass transfer in the central area of the turbine passage, but only a slight augmentation is found in the end wall regions adjacent to the leading and trailing edges. Therefore, the high free-stream turbulence makes the end wall heat load more uniform. It is also observed that the heat/mass transfers along the locus of the pressure-side leg of the leading-edge horseshoe vortex and along the suction-side corner are influenced most strongly by the high free-stream turbulence. In this study, the end wall surface is classified into seven different regions based on the local heat/mass transfer distribution, and the effects of the high free-stream turbulence on the local heat/mass transfer in each region are discussed in detail.

For the active control of a combustion instability, a change should be made in pressure fluctuation or heat release fluctuation using an acoustic driver or a secondary fuel injection. Also, to determine the location and timing of a secondary fuel injection, one needs to know the distribution of heat release fluctuation under combustion instability. In the present research, the distribution of heat release fluctuation has been experimentally measured by changing hydrocarbon fuel, inlet velocity, equivalence ratio, and acoustic forcing condition. It was confirmed that heat release fluctuation with regards to vortex shedding was significantly affected by the $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number. Under the cases of the $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number above approximately 4 - 5, hot spot region was generated in the leading edge of vortex and cold spot region was in the trailing edge. On the contrary, the cases of the $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number below 3 showed the opposite trend.
The objective of this study is to investigate the three-dimensional turbulence flow characteristics of a rotor passage of an one-stage axial flow gas turbine and to investigate the effects of a boundary layer fence installed on the hub endwall of the rotor passage. Secondary flows occurring within the rotor passage (e.g. horseshoe vortex, passage vortex, and cross flow) cause secondary loss and reduce turbine efficiency. To control these secondary flows, a boundary layer fence measuring half the height of the thickness of the inlet boundary layer was installed on the hub endwall of the rotor passage. This study was performed numerically. The results show that the wake and secondary flows generated by the stator reduced the rotor load to constrain the development of cross flow and secondary flow reinforced by the rotor passage. In addition, the secondary vortices occurring within the rotor passage were reduced by the rotation of the rotor. Although, the boundary layer fence induced additional vortices, giving rise to an additional loss of turbine, its presence was shown to reduce the total pressure loss when compared to effects of the case without fence regardless of the relative position of blades by enervating secondary vortices occurred within the rotor passage.

Counter-rotating axial flow fan(CRF) consists of two counter-rotating rotors without stator blades. CRF shows the complex flow characteristics of the three-dimensional, viscous, and unsteady flow fields. For the understanding of the entire core flow in CRF, it is necessary to investigate the three-dimensional unsteady flow field between the rotors. This information is also essential to improve the aerodynamic characteristics and to reduce the aerodynamic noise level and vibration characteristics of the CRF. In this paper, experimental study on the three-dimensional unsteady flow of the CRF is performed at the design point(operating point). Flow fields in the CRF are measured at the cross-sectional planes of the upstream and downstream of each rotor using the $45^{\circ}$ inclined hot-wire. The phase-locked averaged hot-wire technique utilizes the inclined hot-wire, which rotates successively with 120 degree increments about its own axis. Three-dimensional unsteady flow characteristics such as tip vortex, secondary flow and tip leakage flow in the CRF are shown in the form of the axial, radial and tangential velocity vector plot and velocity contour. The phase-locked averaged velocity profiles of the CRF are analyzed by means of the stationary unsteady measurement technique. At the mean radius of the front rotor inlet and the outlet, the phase-locked averaged velocity profiles show more the periodical flow characteristics than those of the hub region. At the tip region of the CRF, the axial velocity is decreased due to the boundary layer effect of the fan casing and the tip vortex flow. The radial and the tangential velocity profiles show the most unstable and unsteady flow characteristics compared with other position of rotors. But, the phase-locked averaged velocity profiles of the downstream of the rear rotor show the aperiodic flow pattern due to the mixture of the front rotor wake period and the rear rotor rotational period.

The instantaneous flow characteristics of a round jet issuing normally into a crossflow has been studied using a flow visualization technique and particle image velocimetry. The effects of parameters such as jet inflow profile and turbulence intensity of the jet are evaluated for various Reynolds numbers in range between 735 and 3150, which are based on the crossflow velocity and jet-pipe diameter. The jet-to-crossflow velocity ratio is fixed at the value of 3.3. Instantaneous later tomographic images of the symmetry plane of the crossflow jet show that there exist very different natures in the flow structures of the near-field of the jet even though the velocity ratio is same. It is found that when the turbulence intensity of jet is elevated, the shear layer becomes much thicker due to the strong entrainment of the ambient fluid by turbulent interaction between the jet and crossflow. The detailed characteristics of instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields are presented to illustrate the effects of the above parameters on the vertical structures of the crossflow jet.
In recent years, as flood damage caused by heavy rains increased, the great-depth tunnel using urban underground space is emerging as a countermeasure of urban inundation. The great-depth tunnel is used to reduce urban inundation by using the underground space. The drainage efficiency of great-depth tunnel depends on the intake design, which leads to increase discharge into the underground space. The spiral intake and the tangential intake are commonly used for the inlet facility. The spiral intake creates a vortex flow along the drop shaft and reduces an energy of the flow by the wall friction. In the tangential intake, flow simply falls down into the drop shaft, and the design is simple to construct compared to the spiral intake. In the case of the spiral intake, the water level at the drop shaft entrance is risen due to the chocking induced by the flowrate increase. The drainage efficiency of the tangential intake decreases because the flow is not sufficiently accelerated under low flow conditions. Therefore, to compensate disadvantages of the previously suggested intake design, the multi-stage intake was developed which can stably withdraw water even under a low flow rate below the design flow rate. The hydraulic characteristics in the multi-stage intake were analyzed by changing the flow rate to compare the drainage performance according to the intake design. From the measurements, the drainage efficiency was improved in both the low and high flow rate conditions when the multi-stage inlet was employed.

Experiments were conducted in a low speed stationary annular cascade to investigate local heat transfer characteristics on the tip and shroud and the effect of inlet Reynolds number on the tip and shroud heat transfer. Detailed mass transfer coefficients on the blade tip and the shroud were obtained using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The turbine test section has a single stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length and the height of the tested blade are 150 mm and about 125 mm, respectively. The blade has flat tip geometry and the mean tip clearance is about $2.5{\%}$of the blade chord. The inlet flow Reynolds number based on chord length and incoming flow velocity is changed from $1.0{\times}10^{5}\;to\;2.3{\times}10^{5}.$ to investigate the effect of Reynolds number. Flow reattachment after the recirculation near the pressure side edge dominates the heat transfer on the tip surface. Shroud surface has very intricate heat/mass transfer distributions due to complex flow patterns such as acceleration, relaminarization, transition to turbulent flow and tip leakage vortex. Heat/mass transfer coefficient on the blade tip is about 1.7 times as high as that on the shroud or blade surface. Overall averaged heat/mass transfer coefficients on the tip and shroud are proportional to $Re_{c}^{0.65}\;and\;Re_{c}^{0.71},$ respectively.

In this study, hydraulic and numerical model experiments were performed to analyze and improve the effects of flow-rate increase in the intake canal of Boryeong Thermal Power Plants on the flow condition in the circulation water pump (CWP) chambers. Based on the numerical simulation results, when the flow-rate increased in the circulation water intake canal, the velocity in the canal and vertical vorticities in the circulation water pump chambers increased and hence the vortex occurrence potential would be greatly increased. It was found by performing hydraulic model experiments that the velocity distribution near the bottom in the inlet of the circulation water pump chambers was highly non-uniform while the velocity distribution near the water surface was nearly uniform. To reduce the non-uniformity in the velocity distribution, triangular flow deflectors were devised. The installation of the flow deflectors in the inlet of circulation water pump chambers was successfully to reduce velocity non-uniformities and to remove flow reversal problems.

In this study, the flow and noise performances of high-speed fan motor unit for cordless vacuum cleaner is improved by optimizing the impeller which drives the suction air through flow passage of the cordless vacuum cleaner. Firstly, the unsteady incompressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are solved to investigate the flow through the fan motor unit using the computational fluid dynamics techniques. Based on flow field results, the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) integral equation is used to predict flow noise radiated from the impeller. Predicted results are compared to the measured ones, which confirms the validity of the numerical method used. It is found that the strong vortex is formed around the mid-chord region of the main blades where the blade curvature change rapidly. Given that vortex acts as a loss for flow and a noise source for noise, impeller blade is redesigned to suppress the identified vortex. The response surface method using two factors is employed to determine the optimum inlet and outlet sweep angles for maximum flow rate and minimum noise. Further analysis of finally selected design confirms the improved flow and noise performance.
