  • In this paper, the effect of circumferential inlet distortion on performance and stall has been experimentally investigated in a high-speed centrifugal compressor, comparing distorted cases with undistorted one. The performance of compressor was slightly deteriorated by defect of inlet static pressure which is caused by the circumferential inlet distortion. As stall was fully developed the inlet distortion did not affect the number of stall cell and the propagation velocity. It also did not affect stall inception at 40,000 and 50,000 rpm. However stall occurred at the lower flow rate for distorted flow at 60,000 rpm. For 50,000 rpm a unexpected phenomenon occurred : stall occurred first and then it disappeared.

  • The design of a scramjet inlet is a process to search global optimization results among those factors influencing the geometry of scramjet in their ranges for some requirements. An optimization algorithm of hybrid genetic algorithm based on genetic algorithm and simplex algorithm was established for this purpose. With the sample provided by a uniform method, the compressive angles which also are wedge angles of the inlet were chosen as the inlet design variables, and the drag coefficient, total pressure recovery coefficient, pressure rising ratio and the combination of these three variables are designed specifically as different optimization objects. The contrasts of these four optimization results show that the hybrid genetic algorithm developed in this paper can capably implement the optimization process effectively for the inlet design and demonstrate some good adaptability.

  • In this study, a cavitation occurrence in a piston-pump inlet was investigated by simulating the pressure distribution, according to the inlet shape of a variable-displacement swash-plate piston pump that supplies high-pressure oil to control the hydraulic system of a marine engine. Two types of pump inlets with different shapes were cast into impression models, and the models were reverse-engineered by 3D scanning. Then, the hydraulic-pressure distribution was analyzed through finite-element analysis. The results of the analysis confirmed that cavitation occurs more easily in the inlet with a steeper slope during pump operation because the inlet pressure on the valve plate is lower than that of the other pump with a gentler inlet slope.

  • The present study has been carried out to analyze the flow characteristics in the inlet expasion duct of a heat recovery steam generator by using numerical flow analysis. The inlet of HRSG corresponds the outlet of gas turbine exit and the flow after gas turbine has strong swirl flow and turbulence. The inlet flow condition of HRSG should be included the exit flow characteristics of gas turbine. The present numerical analysis adopted the flow analysis result of gas turbine exit flow as a inlet flow condition of HRSG analysis. Because the flow characteristics in the inlet duct of the tube bank is strongly related to the performance of a HRSG, it is most important for the optimal design of HGSG to understanding the flow phenomena in the inlet duct of HRSG. From the present study, the position of breakpoint in the inlet expansion duct should be lower than the reference breakpoint position for the optimal flow uniformity before the tube bank.

  • In this study, the affect of mounting axisymmetrical supersonic inlet to airfoil, which has 65 degree swept angle was numerically investigated. The parameter for this calculation are tree stream Mach number M=2.0 and 2.5, the distance between inlet spike and airfoil lower surface $L_{sw}$/$R_{cowl}$ = 1.21-1.54 and angle of attack to the airfoil 0-4. The mass capture ratio improved 3points in M=2.0 condition and 1points in M=2.5 while the mass capture ratio without airfoil surface was 57% and 71 % for each case. These are the result from increase of density and change of velocity deflection by the shock wave structure formed between inlet and airfoil surface. On the other hand, the distortion of Mach number at cowl lip plane increased by 13% in M=2.0, 3% in M=2.5 condition. The effects of the angle attack on the mass capture ratio is greater than that of the shock wave interaction between inlet and cowl, but the effects to the distortion is smaller in the range of this calculation condition. In the condition of M=2.0 with 4 degrees of angle of attack, inlet distortion of Mach number is mainly caused by the affects of the shock wave interaction between inlet and airfoil surface, while the largest angle of the velocity vector in the radial direction at cowl lip plane is caused by the affect of angle of attack. This large velocity vector made the flow inside the cowl subsonic and caused spillage, which interfere with the boundary layer of airfoil surface.

  • This research is aimed to find out how the inlet angle of secondary air affects the uniformity of temperature distribution inside a small incinerator. A commercial code, PHOENICS, is used to simulate the thermal-flow field of an incinerator. The computational grid system is constructed by Multi-Block technique provided by PHOENICS. Numerical experiments are done with the five different angles of secondary air inlet. The uniformity of temperature distribution is evaluated by checking the standard deviation of temperature distribution in an incinerator. The computational results show that there is the minimum value of standard deviation at the certain angle of secondary air inlet, which means that there is an optimum angle of secondary air inlet that could improve the uniformity of temperature distribution in an incinerator. The optimum angle of secondary air inlet is between 30 degree and 45 degree in this particular case.

  • Effects of the duct inlet guide vane on the flowrate distribution characteristics of the defroster nozzle exit in a defrost duct system were investigated experimentally to design the optimum heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system applied in an automotive compartment. A 3-dimensional hot-wire anemometer system was used to measure the velocity field in the vicinity of the defroster nozzle jet flow and the velocity distributions near the windshield interior surface. At first, two cases of with- and without-duct inlet guide vanes were considered as the test condition, and then three cases of the duct inlet guide vane were tested to determine the optimum guide vane shape and their positions. The arrangement of the duct inlet guide vanes has an effect on the improved flowrate distribution at the defroster nozzle exit and near the windshield interior surface. However, the application of the lots of guide vane to control the flow direction leads to increase the flow resistance, resulting in the decreased flowrate issuing from the defroster nozzle. The shape of the duct inlet guide vane affects not only the flowrate distribution between the driver side and the assistant driver side but also the reduction of the flow resistance in the defrost duct system.

  • Theoretically, stable operations of an inlet are achieved at the design condition. However, at off-design conditions supersonic inlets often encounter the problem of aerodynamic instability, called inlet buzz. During inlet buzz, supersonic inlets exhibit considerable oscillation of the shock system in front of the inlet and corresponding large pressure fluctuations downstream. This phenomenon results in decrease of engine performance. An experimental and numerical study was conducted to investigate the phenomenon of supersonic inlet buzz on a generic, axisymmetric, external-compression inlet with a single-surface center-body. This study suggest that intermittent buzz exist and the frequency become to be large as increasing the back pressure.

  • The experimental study investigates two aspects of counterflow sensible heat regenerator operation. First, it examines the regenerator performance in periodic steady state operation with spatially nonuniform inlet temperature in one of the fluid stream. Second, the study examines the transient response of a regenerator to a step change in the inlet temperature of one of the fluid streams. The effect of transient inlet temperatures is analyzed in terms of the response of the outlet fluid temperatures to a step change in temperature of one of the inlet fluid streams. The effect of temperature nonuniformities is analyzed in terms of the change of temperature nonuniformities is analyzed in terms of the change in steady state effectiveness due to a circumferential temperature distribution in one of the inlet fluid streams. an experimental analysis has been conducted using a counterflow, parallel passage, and rotary regenerator made from polyethylene film. Efficiencies follow similar trends with increasing matrix to fluid capacity rate ratio for the balanced and symmetric regenerator with nonuniform inlet temperature.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the heat/mass transfer characteristics within a square film cooling hole with asymmetric inlet flow conditions. The asymmetric inlet flow condition is achieved by making distances between side walls of secondary flow duct and film cooling hole different; one side wall is $2D_h$ apart from the center of film cooling hole, while the other side wall is $1.5D_h$ apart from the center of film cooling hole. The heat/mass transfer experiments for this study have been performed using a naphthalene sublimation method and the flow field has been analyzed by numerical calculation using a commercial code. Swirl flow is generated at the inlet region and the heat/mass transfer pattern with the asymmetric inlet flow condition is changed significantly from that with the symmetric condition. At the exit region, the effect of mainstream on the inside hole flow is reduced with asymmetric condition. The average heat/mass transfer coefficient is higher than that with the symmetric condition due to the swirl flow generated by the asymmetric inlet condition.
