  • The purpose of this paper is to apply the boundary element method to predict the crack growth path. The quarter point element with traction singularity at the crack tip is applied to compact tension type specimens and two inclined slit problems under compression load. The maximum stress criterion which was originally derived for the crack initiation is extended to the analysis of the crack propagation. The predicted crack paths with 1/4 crack growth increment of initial crack length agree quite well with experimental results. It is found that the computed crack path of the boundary element analysis is not mainly affected by the crack increment length.

  • Derivation procedures of exact dynamic element stiffness matrix of shear deformable nonsymmetric thin-walled straight beams are rigorously presented for the spatial free vibration analysis. An exact dynamic element stiffness matrix is established from governing equations for a uniform beam element with nonsymmetric thin-walled cross section. First this numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem by introducing 14 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. Thus, the displacement functions of dispalcement parameters are exactly derived and finally exact stiffness matrices are determined using member force-displacement relationships. The natural frequencies are evaluated and compared with analytic solutions or results of the analysis using ABAQUS' shell elements for the thin-walled straight beam structure in order to demonstrate the validity of this study.

  • The time-stepping boundary element method has been so far applied by the authors to transient heat conduction in isotropic solids as well as in orthotropic solids. In this paper, attempt is made to extend the method to 2-D transient heat conduction in arbitrarily anisotropic solids. The resulting boundary integral equation is discretized by means of the boundary element with quadratic interpolation. The final system of equations thus obtained is solved by advancing the time step from the given initial state to the final state. Through numerical compuation of a few examples the potential usefulness of the proposed method is demonstrated.

  • In the present work, an explicit finite element analysis technique is introduced to analyze the thermal stress fields present in the additive manufacturing process. To this purpose, a finite element matrix formulation is derived from the equations of motion and continuity. The developed code, NET3D, is then applied to various sample problems including thermal stress development. The application of heat to an inclusion from an external source establishes an initial temperature from which heat flows to the surrounding body in the sample problems. The development of thermal stress due to the mismatch between the thermal strains is analyzed. As mass scaling can be used to shorten the computation time of explicit analysis, a mass scaling of 108 is employed here, which yields almost identical results to the quasi-static results.

  • Dynamic behavior of missile which is fired in canister is analyzed by flexible multibody dynamics. The bending elasticity of missile is very important in case that missile is fired in the inclined launcher. In this paper, the force element model for the missile launching stage and the finite element model of missile are developed. The FEA model of missile is condensed into five lumped mass element model and the consistence between FE model and lumped mass model of missile is verified by modal analysis. As a result of analysis, sabot reaction force and pitch rate of missile for the variation of gap size and force element are obtained.

  • In this paper, nonsteady state shaped drawing process has been investigated using the three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method. In order to analyze the shaped drawing process, a method to define straight converging die considering straight die part, die radius part and bearing part has been proposed. In addition, the modeling of initial billet and the generation procedure of mesh system have been suggested. The three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element simulation has been performed for a square sectional drawing process and its result has been confirmed in comparison with the existing experimental one. Also, for the same process conditions, the effect of perimeter ratio in the shaped drawing process has been investigated.

  • In the literatures, the FFT-based SAM has been well applied to the computation of the steady-state responses of discrete dynamic systems. In this paper, a fast fourier transforms (FFT)-based spectral analysis method (SAM) is proposed fur the dynamic analysis of spectral element models subjected to the non-zero initial conditions. However, the FFT-based SAM has not yet been developed for the continuous systems represented by the spectral element model.

  • Finite element analysis tool was developed to analyze the casting process. Generally, casting processes consists of mold filling and solifification. In order to investigate the effects of process variables and to predict the defects, both filling and solidiffication process were simulated simultaneously. At filling process, especiallywe consider thermal coupling to investigate thermal history of material during the filling stage. And thermal condition at the final stage of filling is used as the initial conditions in a solidification process for the exact simulation of the actual casting processes. At mold filling process, Lagrangian-type finite element method with automatic remashing scheme was used to find the material flow. To avoid numerical instability in low viscous fluid, a perturbation method with artificial viscosity is adopted. At solififfication process, enthalpy-based finite element method was used to solve the heat transfer problem with phase change. And elastic stress analysis has been performed to predict the thermal residual stress. Through the FE analysis, solidiffication time, position of solidus line, liquidus line and thermal residual stress are studied. Finite element tools developed in this study will be used process design of casting process and maybe basic structure for total CAE system of castigs which will be constructed afterward.

  • The finite element modeling of a ship for hull structural analysis on the basis of new harmonized common structural rules (CSR-H) is to be extended to the cargo holds in fore and after body of a ship. Unlike the parallel middle-body where the external and internal features of hull are equal along to the longitudinal direction of a ship, in fore and after body, the external and internal features of hull vary linearly or even irregularly in forms of a surface or a curve along to the longitudinal direction of a ship. Thus, it needs lots of design man-hours for the modeling for structural analysis. In order to save man-hours in initial structural design phase of a ship, the specified 3D CAD system has been adopted in shipbuilding industry. Through the interface between CAD and CAE (rule scantling and direct strength assessment), design man-hour in initial design phase can be saved even under the environment of CSR-H.

  • Recently, the waterproofing performance of high-voltage connectors in automotive vehicles has attracted increased interest. In this study, an optimal cross-sectional shape was derived to obtain uniform contact pressure and strain by considering stress relaxation problems caused by initial tension when mounting a seal. A high strain of 52.1 was distributed in the round region, owing to excessive initial tension. The finite element method (FEM) analysis indicated that the strain corresponding to the optimal initial tensile was 11. We adopted six design factors to optimize the seal cross-section and three factors as the main design factors. An orthogonal arrangement table was prepared using Minitab. FEM analyses of 16 study models were conducted to determine the optimized model. The contact pressure of the optimization model is the most evenly distributed while satisfying the waterproof performance of 0.47 MPa. Compared to the initial model, the difference in strain decreases from 35.5% to 19.6%. Finally, the derived cross-sectional shape can reduce the strain of the round region by 33.8% and the differences in the contact pressure at the upper and lower surfaces by 42% and 76%, respectively.
