Dynamic response measurements from natural excitation were carried out for three 18-story office buildings to determine their inherent properties. The beam-column frame system was adopted as a typical structural form, but a core wall was added to resist the lateral force more effectively, resulting in a mixed configuration. To extract modal parameters such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios from a series of vibration records at each floor, the most advanced operational system identification methods based on frequency- and time-domain like FDD, pLSCF and SSI were applied. Extracted frequencies and mode shapes from the different identification methods showed a greater consistency for three buildings, however the three lower frequencies extracted were 1.2 to 1.7 times as stiff as those obtained using the initial FE models. Comparing the extracted fundamental periods with those estimated from the code equations and FE analysis, the FE analysis results showed the most flexible behavior, and the most simple equation that considers the building height as the only parameter correlated fairly well with test results. It is recognized that such a discrepancy arises from the fact that the present tests exclude the stiffness decreasing factors like concrete cracking, while the FE models ignore the stiffness increasing factors, such as the contribution of non-structural elements and the actual material properties used.
A turn-buckle is capable of adjusting the tensile force by left-hand threads and right-hand threads between tension members. There are different types of turn-buckles according to tension member and connection form but the practical and existing turn-buckles are incapable of measuring the tensile force. A turn-buckle for adjusting and measuring tensile force has therefore been developed. This study shows the ultimate strength and reliability for measurement of the new turn-buckles through finite element analysis of the developed ones. From analytic results of the new turn-buckles which have the measurement limit loads of 100kN, 200kN and 300kN, the ultimate strength is approximately five times stronger than the measurement limit capacity. Additionally, a review of the new turn-buckle, which has the measurement limit load of over 300kN, shows that there is a tendency for the size of turn-buckle to become larger. So the connection devices were designed and the loading test was conducted from the concept that the parallel connection of turn-buckle with 300kN capacity can measure the tensile force of 600kN. The results of parallel loading test show the sufficient possibility. Furthermore, the mock-up test was constructed to investigate the release of initial load and corrosion when the new turn-buckle is installed at the outdoor and exposed to rain and atmosphere.

In this study, Galerkin scheme and SU/PG scheme of Petrov-Galerkin family were applied to the shallow water equations and a finite element model for shallow water flow was developed. Numerical simulations were conducted in several flumes with convection-dominated flow condition. Flow simulation of channel with slender structure in the water course revealed that Galerkin and SU/PG schemes showed similar results under very low Fr number and Re number condition. However, when the Fr number increased up to 1.58, Galerkin scheme did not converge while SU/PG scheme produced stable solutions after 5 iterations by Newton-Raphson method. For the transcritical flow simulation in diverging channel, the present model predicted the hydraulic jump accurately in terms of the jump location, the depth slope, and the flow depth after jump, and the numerical results showed good agreements with the hydraulic experiments carried out by Khalifa(1980). In the oblique hydraulic jump simulation, in which convection-dominated supercritical flow (Fr=2.74) evolves, Galerkin scheme blew up just after the first iteration of the initial time step. However, SU/PG scheme captured the boundary of oblique hydraulic jump accurately without numerical oscillation. The maximum errors quantified with exact solutions were less than 0.2% in water depth and velocity calculations, and thereby SU/PG scheme predicted the oblique hydraulic jump phenomena more accurately compared with the previous studies (Levin et al., 2006; Ricchiuto et al., 2007).

Czochralski (CZ) growth process is one of the most important techniques for growing high quality sapphire single crystal for LED application. In this study, the inductively-heated CZ growth processes for the sapphire crystal of 300 mm length have been analyzed numerically using finite element method. The hot zone structures were modified with the crucible geometry change and the additional insulation layer installed above the crucible. The results show that the solid-liquid interface height decreased from about 80 mm at initial stage to 40 mm after mid-stage due to achieve the growth speed balance. Also the optimal input power of the modified system was similar with the original one due to the compensation effects of the crucible geometry and additional insulation. The crystal temperature grown by the modified CZ grower was increased about 10 K than the original one. Therefore the sapphire crystal of 300 mm height was grown successfully.

This paper aims to investigate the seismic characteristics of strip-type damping devices possessing optimized shapes for the moment-resisting mechanism throughout analytical and experimental studies. Predicting equations for initial stiffness and yielding strength were introduced and compared with analytical results obtained from finite element analyses (FEAs) using commercial FEA program ABAQUS. In order for establishing predicting equations, two idealized processes were considered and both predicting equations showed that they could provide enough approximations for seismic applications in building structures. Throughout experimental studies, it was noted that structural uncertainties on mild steels, connection details and structural types linking damping devices with building structures could interrupt predicting structural behavior of the devices. Also, it was observed that shear stress concentrations should be considered if shear yielding type devices are applied into building structures. Nevertheless, it was shown that structural conservatism can be established using the predicting equations and seismic applications of the damping devices can enhance the seismic performance of building structures efficiently in the viewpoint that they have high resistance to low-cycle fatigue failures.
The test results from three one fourth scale models using high strength Reinforced Concrete $f_x=704\;kg/cm^2,\;f_y=5.830\;kg/cm^2$ are presented. Such specimens are considered to represent the critical 3 storics of 60-story tall building of a structural wall system in area of high seismicity respectively. They are tested under inplane vertical and horizontal loading. The main varlable is the level of axial stress. The amounts of vertical and horizontal reinforcement are identical for the three walls testcd. The cross-section of all walls is barbell shape. The aspectratio($h_w/I_w$) of test specimen is 1.8. The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of levels of applied axial stresses on the inelastic behavior of high-strength R /C tall walls. Experimental results of high strength R /C tall walls subjected to axial load and simulated sels rnic loading show that it is possible to insure a ductlle dominant performance by promotmg flex ural yielding of vertical reinforcement and that axial stresses within $O.21f_x$ causes an increase in horizontal load-carrying capacity, initial secant st~ffness characteristics, but an decrease in displacement ductility. energy dissipation index and work damage index of high strength K /C tall walls

We have to prepare for the existing threats from North Korea and potential threats in the future. It is important to utilize our resources as effectively as possible to build military power that brings victory in a war. Based on a sustainable required operational capability, weapons systems at the acquisition stage need to maintain a combat-readiness posture and ensure operational sustainability. To achieve this, establishment of procedures that develop elements of depot maintenance at the beginning, which enables economical and effective depot maintenance during that stage, is essential. First, the requirement paper needs to develop the concept of the depot maintenance requirement through the pre-study outlined by this paper. Second, at the system development stage, a Development Plan of Depot Maintenance draft should be proposed. This is the initial paper that can develop the elements of depot maintenance, and it should be verified by a field test. Third, each force's logistics command should write a Depot Maintenance Direction draft and a Mid-term Requirement of Elements of Depot Maintenance draft with the proven Development Plan of Depot Maintenance draft. Also, the verified paper needs to be realized and renewed by the time the Requirement of Elements of Depot Maintenance draft is completed. In conclusion, the procedures explained above will contribute to build an economical and effective military power in a reality faced with a resource shortage and threats from the enemy.
This experiment was carried out to examine the effects of morphology on properties of La-Co substituted SrM ferrite. The magnetic properties of calcined and sintered materials were varried with the substitutional amount of La and Co elements in Sr-ferrite. In the substituted SrM ferrite, the atomic fraction x of La is directly related to the mole ratio n of iron oxide and the atomic fraction y of Co by equation x=2ny. The Hcj values of the calcined powder were about 270 kA/m and 240 kA/m with x=0.3 and x=0.2, respectively at stoichiometry, n=6.0. Crystallites of the sintered material were grown with a plate shape, and their size decreased with increasing mole ratios. Such a shape was caused by the initial state of crystallite formed after calcination. In case of x=0.3 and n=6.0, Br was 415 mT and Hcj was 355 kA/m, and in x=0.2 and n=6.0, Br was 410 mT and Hcj was 370 kA/m. The squareness in 2nd quarter of BH curve with x=0.2 was smoothly improved to compared with x=0.3.

To investigate the effect of early-morning heating periods on growth and yield of cucumber and heating load in a greenhouse cultivation, three additional heating periods (0, 1 and 2 hours) were compared to rise temperature from $12^{\circ}C\;to\;16^{\circ}C$ in the early-morning. Leaf temperature just before opening the thermal screen was $3.3^{\circ}C\;and\;4.1^{\circ}C$ higher in the 1 and 2 hour heating compared to that in the control (0 hour heating), respectively. Photosynthetic rate, conductance to $H_2O$ and transpiration rate of cucumber leaves were the highest in the 2 hour heating, and the lowest in the control. However. the difference between the 1 hour and 2 hour heating was not significant. Inorganic element content in cucumber leaves was not significant among the treatments of duration. Initial growth after planting of cucumber was greater in the 1 and 2 hour heating than that in the control. Yield increased by $11\%\;and\;15\%$ in the 1 hour and 2 hour heating compared to that in the control. respectively. Fuel consumption for heating increased by $12\%\;and\;22\%$ in the 1 hour and 2 hour heating compared to that in the control, respectively. Considering in the yield and fuel consumption for heating. 1 or 2 hours of early morning heating could be effective in temperature management for cucumber in a greenhouse cultivation.
A burnt-out prostate cancer tumor is a very rare clinical entity. The term 'burnt-out' refers to a primary tumor that has spontaneously and nearly completely regressed without treatment. Since metastasis of prostate cancer is usually encountered in the presence of advanced disease, distant metastasis with an undetectable primary tumor is very rare. We report herein a case of a burnt-out prostate cancer tumor that metastasized to the thoracic (T) spine and caused cord compression. A 66-year-old man visited the Emergency Department due to weakness of both legs for the past two days. His blood and urine tests were normal at the time. His spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans looked like bone metastasis that involved the T-7 vertebral body and a posterior element, and caused spinal cord compression. Other images, including from the brain MRI, neck/chest/abdomino-pelvic computed tomography (CT) scan and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) and endoscopy, revealed no lesions that suggested malignancy. After total corpectomy T-7 and screw fixation/fusion at T5 to T10, the pathology report revealed a metastatic carcinoma that was strongly positive for prostate-specific antigen (PSA). The serum PSA value was 1.5 ng/mL. The transrectal 12-core prostate biopsy and ultrasonography showed no definitive hypoechoic lesion, but one specimen had slight (only 1%) adenocarcinoma with a Gleason score of 6 (3+3). The final diagnosis was burned-out prostate cancer with an initial normal PSA value. Although metastatic disease with an unknown primary origin was confirmed, a more aggressive approach in seeking the primary origin could provide a more specific treatment strategy and greater clinical benefit to patients.
