As a kind of intelligent materials, conductive asphalt concrete has a broad application prospect including melting ice and snow on the pavement, closing cracks in asphalt concrete, sensing pavement damage, and so on. Conductive pavement will be suffered from fatigue failure as conventional pavement in the process of service, and this fatigue damage of internal structure can be induced by electrical signal output. The characteristics of electrical signal variation of conductive asphalt concrete in the process of fatigue cracking were researched in this paper. The whole process was clearly divided into three stages according to resistance changes, and the development of fatigue damage wasn't obvious in stage I and stage II, while in stage III, the synchronicity between the resistance and damage began to appear. Thus, fatigue damage variable D and initial damage value $D_0$ represented by the functions of resistance were introduced in stage III. After calculating the initial damage value $D_0$ under different stress levels, it was concluded that the initial damage value $D_0$ had no noticeable change, just ranged between 0.24 and 0.25. This value represented a critical point which could be used to inform the repair time of early fatigue damage in the conductive asphalt pavement.
Urban railway systems are located under populated areas and are mostly constructed for underground structures which demand high standards of structural safety. However, the damage progression of underground structures is hard to evaluate and damaged underground structures may not effectively stand against successive earthquakes. This study attempts to examine initial damage-stage and to access structural damage condition of the ground structures using Earthquake Damage Monitoring (EDM) system. For actual underground structure, vulnerable damaged member of Ulchiro-3ga station is chosen by finite element analysis using applied artificial earthquake load, and then damage pattern and history of damaged members is obtained from measured acceleration data introduced unsupervised learning recognition. The result showed damage index obtained by damage scenario establishment using acceleration response of selected vulnerable members is useful. Initial damage state is detected for selected vulnerable member according to established damage scenario. Stiffness degrading ratio is increasing whereas the value of reliability interval is decreasing.
In order to analyze the healing effectiveness of rock salt cracks affected by the applied stresses and time, we used the ultrasonic technology to monitor the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) variations for different initial stress-damaged rock salts during self-healing experiments. The self-healing experiments were to create different conditions to improve the microcracks closure or recrystallized, which the self-healing effect of damaged salt specimens were analyzed during the recovery period about 30 days. We found that: The ultrasonic pulse velocity of the damaged rock salts increases rapidly during the first 9 days recovery, and the values gradually increase to reach constant values after 30 days. The damaged value and the healed value were identified based on the variation of the wave velocity. The damaged values of the specimens that are subject to higher initial damage stress are still keeping in large after 30 days recovery under the same recovery condition It is interesting that the damage and the healing were not in the linear relationship, and there also existed a damage threshold for salt cracks healing ability. When the damage degree is less than the threshold, the self-healing ratio of rock salt is increased with the increase in damage degree. However, while the damage degree exceeds the threshold, the self-healing ratio is decreased with the increase in damage.
The objective of this study was to investigate the electrochemical behavior and damage degree of metal surface under different conditions by performing a potentiodynamic polarization experiment using an electropolishing solution for UNS S31603 based on initial delay time and surface roughness (parameters). A second anodic peak occurred at initial delay time of 0s and 100s. However, it was not discovered at 1000s and 3600s. This research referred to an increase in current density due to hydrogen oxidation reaction among various hypotheses for the second anodic peak. After the experiment, both critical current density and corrosion current density decreased when the initial delay time (immersion time) was longer. As a result of surface analysis, characteristics of the potentiodynamic polarization behavior were similar with roughness, although the degree of damage was clearly different. With an increase in surface roughness value, the degree of surface damage was precisely observed. As such, electrochemical properties were different according to the immersion time in the electropolishing solution. To select electropolishing conditions such as applied current density, voltage, and immersion time, 1000s for initial delay time on the potentiodynamic polarization behavior was the most appropriate in this experiment.
A process model including the effects of both the texture development and ductile damage evolution In plane strain rolling is presented. In this process model, anisotropy from deformation texture and deterioration of mechanical properties due to growth of micro voids are directly coupled Into the virtual work expressions for the momentum and mass balances. Special treatments in obtaining the initial values of field variables in the nonlinear simultaneous equations for the anisotropic, dilatant viscoplastic deformation are also given. Mutual effects of the texture development and damage evolution during plate rolling are carefully examined in terms of the distribution of strain components, accumulated damage, R-value as well as yield surfaces.

The strategy for the management of earthquakes is shifting from post recovery to prevention; therefore, seismic performance management requires quantitative predictions of damage and the establishment of strategies for initial responses to earthquakes. Currently, seismic performance evaluation for seismic management in Korea consists of two stages: preliminary evaluation and detailed evaluation. Also, the priority of seismic performance management is determined in accordance with the preliminary evaluation. As a deterministic method, preliminary evaluation quantifies the physical condition and socio-economic importance of a facility by various predetermined indices, and the priority is decided by the relative value of the indices; however, with the deterministic method it is difficult to consider any uncertainty related to the return-year, epicenter, and propagation of seismic energy. Also this method cannot support tasks such as quantitative socio-economic damage and the provision of data for initial responses to earthquakes. Moreover, indirect damage is often greater than direct damage; therefore, a method to quantify damage is needed to enhance accuracy. In this paper, a Seismic Risk Assessment is used to quantify the cost of damage of road facilities in Pohang city and to support decision making.

The loss of strength in a structure as a result of cyclic loads over a period of life time is an important phenomenon for the life-cycle analysis. Service loads are accentuated at the areas of stress concentration, mainly at the connection of components. Structural components unavoidably are affected by defects such as surface scratches, surface roughness and weld defects of random sizes, which usually occur during the manufacturing and handling process. These defects are shown to have an important effect on the fatigue life of the structural components by promoting crack initiation sites. The value of equivalent initial flaw size (EIFS) is calculated by using the back extrapolation technique and the Paris law of fatigue crack growth from results of fatigue tests. We try to analyze the effect of EIFS distribution in a multiple site damage (MSD) specimen by using the extended finite element method (XFEM). For the analysis, fatigue tests were conducted on the centrally-cracked specimens and MSD specimens.
In this paper, finite element stamping analysis was carried out for the front lower arm to examine the applicability of solid element with damage theory to predict shear fracture phenomena induced by sheared edge as well as deformation mechanisms. Mechanical properties related to deformation and damage theory were determined from tensile test. Shear fracture was predicted by normalized Cockcroft-Latham model with initial imposition of the damage value along the sheared edge. Simulation results illustrated that the analysis with solid element and damage theory predicted edge profile, strain distribution, and forming load more accurately than the analysis with shell element. Simulation with solid element can also predict the shear fracture more exactly comparing to analysis with shell element and forming limit curve.
The dependency of the electrical characteristics of silicon solar-cells on the depth of damaged layer induced by wire-sawing process was investigated. To compare cell efficiency with residual sawing damage, silicon solar-cells were fabricated by using as-sawn wafers having different depth of saw damage without any damaged etching process. The damaged layer induced by wire-sawing process in silicon bulk intensely influenced the value of fill factor on solar cells, degrading fill factor to 57.20%. In addition, the photovoltaic characteristics of solar cells applying texturing process shows that although the initial depth of saw-damage induced by wire-sawing process was different, the value of short-circuit current, fill-factor, and power-conversion-efficiency have an almost same, showing ~17.4% of cell efficiency. It indicated that the degradation of solar-cell efficiency induced by wire-sawing process could be prevented by eliminating all damaged layer through sufficient pyramid-surface texturing process.
We fabricated an anode-type ion beam source and studied its driving characteristics of the initial extraction of ions using two driving mechanisms: a diffusion phenomenon and a charge repulsion phenomenon. For specimen exposed to the ion beam in two methods, the surface impurity element was investigated by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Upon Ar gas injection for plasma generation the ion beam source was operated for 48 hours. We found a Fe 2p peak 5.4 at. % in the initial ions by the diffusion mechanism while no indication of Fe in the ions released in the charge repulsion mechanism. As for a long operation of 200 min, the temperature of ion beam sources was measured to increase at the rate of ${\sim}0.1^{\circ}C/min$ and kept at the initial value of $27^{\circ}C$ for driving by diffusion and charge repulsion mechanism, respectively. In this study, we confirmed that the ion beam source driven by the charge repulsion mechanism was very efficient for a long operation as proved by little electrode damage and thermal stability.
