This paper proposes Kalman Filter-based relative navigation algorithms for proximity tasks such as rendezvous/docking/cluster-operation of spacecraft using PSD Sensors and Infrared Beacon Modules. Numerical simulations are performed for comparative analysis of the performance of each relative-navigation technique. Based on the operation principle and optical modeling of the PSD Sensor and the Infrared Beacon Module used in the relative navigation algorithm, a measurement model for the Kalman filter is constructed. The Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) and the Unscented Kalman Filter(UKF) are used as probabilistic relative navigation based on measurement fusion to utilize kinematics and dynamics information on translational and rotation motions of satellites. Relative position and relative attitude estimation performance of two filters is compared. Especially, through the simulation of various scenarios, performance changes are also investigated depending on the number of PSD Sensors and IR Beacons in target and chaser satellites.
The tracking of current location of residents is an essential requirement for context-aware service of smart houses. This paper presents a wireless sensor network system which could detect location transition such as entrance and exit to a room and also identify the user who passed the room, without duty of wearing any sort of tag. We designed new sensor node to solve the problem of short operation lifetime of previous work[1] which has two pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensors and an ultrasonic sensor, as well as a 2.4 GHz radio frequency wireless transceiver. The proposed user identification method is to discriminate a person based on his/her height by using an ultrasonic sensor. The detection idea of entering/exiting behavior is based on order of triggering of two PIR sensors. The topology of the developed wireless sensor network system is simple star structure in which each sensor node is connected to one sink node directly. We evaluated the proposed sensing system with a set of experiments for three subjects in a model house. The experimental result shows that the averaged recognition rate of user identification is 81.3% for three persons. and perfect entering/exiting behavior detection performance.
Global warming and rapid climate change have long affected the characteristics of typhoons in the Northwest Pacific, which has induced increasing devastating disasters along the coastal regions of the Korean peninsula. Synthetic Aperature Radar (SAR), as one of the microwave sensors, makes it possible to produce high-resolution sea surface wind field around the typhoon under cloudy atmospheric conditions, which has been impossible to obtain the winds from satellite optical and infrared sensors. The Geophysical Model Functions (GMFs) for sea surface wind retrieval from SAR data requires the input of wind direction, which should be based on the accurate estimation of the center of the typhoon. This study estimated the typhoon centers using Sentinel-1A images to improve the problem of typhoon center detection method and to reflect it in retrieving the sea surface wind. The results were validated by comparing with the typhoon best track data provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), and also by using infrared images of Himawari-8 satellite. The initial center position of the typhoon was determined by using VH polarization, thereby reducing the possibility of error. The detected center showed a difference of 23.76 km on average with the best track data of the four typhoons provided by the KMA and JMA. Compared to the typhoon center estimated by Himawari-8 satellite, the results showed an average spatial variation of 11.80 km except one typhoon located near land with a large difference of 58.73 km. This result suggests that high-resolution SAR images can be used to estimate the center and retrieve sea surface wind around typhoons.
A reflecting omnidirectional optical system with four spherical and aspherical mirrors, for use with long-wavelength infrared light (LWIR) for night surveillance, is proposed. It is designed to include a collecting pseudo-Cassegrain reflector and an imaging inverse pseudo-Cassegrain reflector, and the design process and performance analysis is reported in detail. The half-field of view (HFOV) and F-number of this optical system are $40-110^{\circ}$ and 1.56, respectively. To use the LWIR imaging, the size of the image must be similar to that of the microbolometer sensor for LWIR. As a result, the size of the image must be $5.9mm{\times}5.9mm$ if possible. The image size ratio for an HFOV range of $40^{\circ}$ to $110^{\circ}$ after optimizing the design is 48.86%. At a spatial frequency of 20 lp/mm when the HFOV is $110^{\circ}$, the modulation transfer function (MTF) for LWIR is 0.381. Additionally, the cumulative probability of tolerance for the LWIR at a spatial frequency of 20 lp/mm is 99.75%. As a result of athermalization analysis in the temperature range of $-32^{\circ}C$ to $+55^{\circ}C$, we find that the secondary mirror of the inverse pseudo-Cassegrain reflector can function as a compensator, to alleviate MTF degradation with rising temperature.
A modified catadioptric omnidirectional optical system (MCOOS) using an RGB/NIR CMOS sensor is optically designed for a capsule endoscope with the front field of view (FOV) in visible light (RGB) and side FOV in visible and near-infrared (NIR) light. The front image is captured by the front imaging lens system of the MCOOS, which consists of an additional three lenses arranged behind the secondary mirror of the catadioptric omnidirectional optical system (COOS) and the imaging lens system of the COOS. The side image is properly formed by the COOS. The Nyquist frequencies of the sensor in the RGB and NIR spectra are 90 lp/mm and 180 lp/mm, respectively. The overall length of 12 mm, F-number of 3.5, and two half-angles of front and side half FOV of 70° and 50°-120° of the MCOOS are determined by the design specifications. As a result, a spatial frequency of 154 lp/mm at a modulation transfer function (MTF) of 0.3, a depth of focus (DOF) of -0.051-+0.052 mm, and a cumulative probability of tolerance (CPT) of 99% are obtained from the COOS. Also, the spatial frequency at MTF of 170 lp/mm, DOF of -0.035-0.051 mm, and CPT of 99.9% are attained from the front-imaging lens system of the optimized MCOOS.

As demanding the detection of explosive molecules, it is required to develop rapidly and precisely responsive sensors with ultra-high sensitivity. Since two-dimensional semiconductors have an atomically thin body nature where mobile carriers accumulate, the abrupt modulation carrier in the thin body channel can be expected. To investigate the effectiveness of WSe2 semiconductor materials as a detection material for TNT (Trinitrotoluene) explosives, WSe2 was synthesized using thermal chemical vapor deposition, and afterward, WSe2 FETs (Field Effect Transistors) were fabricated using standard photo-lithograph processes. Raman Spectrum and FT-IR (Fourier-transform infrared) spectroscopy reveal that the adsorption of TNT molecules induces the structural transition of WSe2 crystalline. The electrical properties before and after adsorption of TNT molecules on the WSe2 surface were compared; as -50 V was applied as the back gate bias, 0.02 μA was recorded in the bare state, and the drain current increased to 0.41 μA with a dropping 0.6% (w/v) TNT while maintaining the p-type behavior. Afterward, the electrical characteristics were additionally evaluated by comparing the carrier mobility, hysteresis, and on/off ratio. Consequently, the present report provides the milestone for developing ultra-sensitive sensors with rapid response and high precision.

The coverage ability is one of essential techniques for the Robotic Vacuum Cleaner (RVC). Most of the RVCs rely on random or regular pattern movement to cover a target space due to the technical difficulties to implement localization and map and constraints of hardwares such as controller and sensors. In this paper, we consider two main issues which are low computational load and using sensors with very limited sensing capabilities. First, in our approach, computing procedures to build map and detect the RVC's position are minimized by simplifying data obtained from sensors. To reduce computational load, it needs simply presenting an environment with objects of various shapes. Another isuue mentioned above is regarded as one of the most important problems in our approach, because we consider that many RVCs use low-cost sensor systems such as an infrared sensor or ultrasonic sensor with limited capabilities in limited range, detection uncertainty, measurement noise, etc. Methods presented in this paper are able to apply to general RVCs equipped with these sensors. By both simulation and real experiment, we evaluate our method and verify that the proposed method guarantees a complete coverage.

Image registration is a process to establish the spatial correspondence between the images of same scene, which are acquired at different view points, at different times, or by different sensors. In this paper, we propose an effective registration method for images acquired by multi-sensors, such as EO (electro-optic) and IR (infrared) sensors. Image registration is achieved by extracting features and finding the correspondence between features in each input images. In the recent research, the multi-sensor image registration method that finds corresponding features by exploiting NMI (Normalized Mutual Information) was proposed. Conventional NMI-based image registration methods assume that the statistical correlation between two images should be global, however images from EO and IR sensors often cannot satisfy this assumption. Therefore the registration performance of conventional method may not be sufficient for some practical applications because of the low accuracy of corresponding feature points. The proposed method improves the accuracy of corresponding feature points by combining the gradient orientation as spatial information along with NMI attributes and provides more accurate and robust registration performance. Representative experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.
The utilization of multispectral imaging systems (MIS) in remote sensing has become crucial for large-scale agricultural operations, particularly for diagnosing plant health, monitoring crop growth, and estimating plant phenotypic traits through vegetation indices (VIs). However, environmental factors can significantly affect the accuracy of multispectral reflectance data, leading to potential errors in VIs and crop status assessments. This paper reviewed the complex interactions between environmental conditions and multispectral sensors emphasizing the importance of accounting for these factors to enhance the reliability of reflectance data in agricultural applications. An overview of the fundamentals of multispectral sensors and the operational principles behind vegetation index (VI) computation was reviewed. The review highlights the impact of environmental conditions, particularly solar zenith angle (SZA), on reflectance data quality. Higher SZA values increase cloud optical thickness and droplet concentration by 40-70%, affecting reflectance in the red (-0.01 to 0.02) and near-infrared (NIR) bands (-0.03 to 0.06), crucial for VI accuracy. An SZA of 45° is optimal for data collection, while atmospheric conditions, such as water vapor and aerosols, greatly influence reflectance data, affecting forest biomass estimates and agricultural assessments. During the COVID-19 lockdown, reduced atmospheric interference improved the accuracy of satellite image reflectance consistency. The NIR/Red edge ratio and water index emerged as the most stable indices, providing consistent measurements across different lighting conditions. Additionally, a simulated environment demonstrated that MIS surface reflectance can vary 10-20% with changes in aerosol optical thickness, 15-30% with water vapor levels, and up to 25% in NIR reflectance due to high wind speeds. Seasonal factors like temperature and humidity can cause up to a 15% change, highlighting the complexity of environmental impacts on remote sensing data. This review indicated the importance of precisely managing environmental factors to maintain the integrity of VIs calculations. Explaining the relationship between environmental variables and multispectral sensors offers valuable insights for optimizing the accuracy and reliability of remote sensing data in various agricultural applications.
The lanthanum-modified lead titanate (PLT) thin films on (100) cleaved MgO single crystal substrate have been prepared by RF magnetron sputtering method using PbO-rich target with varing La contents. The substrate temperature, working pressure, $Ar/O_{2}$, and RF power density of PLT thin films were $580^{\circ}C$ 10mTorr, 10/1, and $1.7W/cm^{2}$, respectively. In these conditions, the c-axis growth and tetragonality of the PLT thin films decreased for addition of La content and the PLT thin films showed diffuse phase transition from high temperature XRD patterns. The infrared sensor was fabricated. The remanent polarization was above $1.71{\mu}C/cm^{2}$ and the pyroelectric voltage was above 500mV with 10:1 signal to noise ratio.
