  • This study examines the stealth function of sputtered fabric with an infrared thermal imaging camera in terms of the thermal and infrared (IR) transmittance characteristics. Various base fabrics were selected, infrared imaging was performed, and infrared transmittance was measured. By infrared camera experiment it was found that the sample was concealed because it had a similar color to the surroundings when the aluminum layer was directed toward the outside. In addition, a comparison of the infrared thermographic image of the untreated sample and the sputtered sample in the laboratory showed that the difference in ${\Delta}E$ value ranged from 31 to 90.4 and demonstrated effective concealment. However, concealment was not observed in the case of the 3-layer (Nylon-Al-Nylon) model when a sputtered aluminum layer existed between two nylon layers. The direction of the sputtering layer did not affect the infrared transmittance in the infrared transmittance experiment. Therefore, it seems better to interpret the concealing effect in the infrared thermographic images by using thermal transfer theory rather than infrared transmittance theory. We believe that the results of this study will be applicable to developing high performance smart clothing and military uniforms.

  • Infrared (IR) wavelength is out of visible range and thus usually cut by hot filters in general commercial cameras. However, some information from the near-IR (NIR) range is known to improve the overall visibility of scene in many cases. For example when there is fog or haze in the scene, NIR image has clearer visibility than visible image because of its stronger penetration property. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for fusing the RGB and NIR images to obtain the enhanced images of the outdoor scenes. First, we construct a weight map by comparing the contrast of the RGB and NIR images, and then fuse the two images based on the weight map. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective in enhancing visible image and removing the haze.

  • In this paper is image characteristics of main gas can be a basic data for the identification of the type of leaking gas and the estimation of the emission quantity in OGI(Optical Gas Image) technology. The purpose of this research is to observe the differences of leaking gas images of the two important hydrocarbons of methane and propane in the industry. We fabricated a wind shield of quartz-based with infrared-permeable properties was prepared and methane and propane were simultaneous emission and then photographed with an infrared OGI camera and we are analyzed it. We have a stable image with windbreak of quartz-based minimizes the effect of wind. As a result of analyzing the image of two hydrocarbons with a leakage gas reference value of 1 L/min, an easily recognizable distances by OGI camera were 6 m for methane and 9 m for propane. In the distances range of 1 to 10 m between the infrared camera and the leaking gas point, the gas plume size of the propane gas was larger and clear than that of the methane gas plume. Compared with the number of points in the image, propane was 3.8 times more than methane.

  • Synthetic dynamic infrared image generation from the given virtual environment is being the primary goal to simulate the output of the infra-red(IR) camera installed on a vehicle to evaluate the control algorithm for various search & reconnaissance missions. Due to the difficulty to obtain actual IR data in complex environments, Artificial intelligence(AI) has been used recently in the field of image data generation. In this paper, CycleGAN technique is applied to obtain a more realistic synthetic IR image. We added the Structural Similarity Index Measure(SSIM) loss function to the L1 loss function to generate a more realistic synthetic IR image when the CycleGAN image is generated. From the simulation, it is applicable to the guided-missile flight simulation tests by using the synthetic infrared image generated by the proposed technique.

  • The military is facing a continuous decrease in personnel, and in order to cope with potential accidents and challenges in operations, efforts are being made to reduce the direct involvement of personnel by utilizing the latest technologies. Recently, the use of various sensors related to Manned-Unmanned Teaming and artificial intelligence technologies has gained attention, emphasizing the need for flexible utilization methods. In this paper, we propose four dataset construction methods that can be used for effective training of robots that can be deployed in military operations, utilizing not only RGB image data but also data acquired from IR image sensors. Since there is no publicly available dataset that combines RGB and IR image data, we directly acquired the dataset within buildings. The input values were constructed by combining RGB and IR image sensor data, taking into account the field of view, resolution, and channel values of both sensors. We compared the proposed method with conventional RGB image data classification training using the same learning model. By employing the proposed image data fusion method, we observed improved stability in training loss and approximately 3% higher accuracy.

  • Thermal imaging is mainly used in military equipment required for night observation. In particular, technologies of uncooled thermal imaging detectors are being developed as applied to low-cost night observation system. Many system integrators require different specifications of the uncooled thermal imaging camera but their development time is short. In this approach, EOSYSTEM has developed a small size, TEC-less uncooled thermal imaging camera module with $32{\times}32mm$ size and low power consumption. Both domestic detector and import detector are applied to the EOSYSTEM's thermal imaging camera module. The camera module contains efficient infrared image processing algorithms including : Temperature compensation non-uniformity correction, Bad/Dead pixel replacement, Column noise removal, Contrast/Edge enhancement algorithms providing stable and low residual non-uniformity infrared image.

  • A hyperspectral imaging spectrometer has shown significant advantages in performance over other existing ones for remote sensing applications. It can collect hundreds of narrow, adjacent spectral bands for each image, which provides a wealth of information on unique spectral characteristics of objects. We have developed a compact hyperspectral imaging system that successively shows high spatial and spectral resolutions and fast data processing performance. In this paper, we present an overview of the hyperspectral imaging system including the strucure of geometrical optics and several image processing schemes such as wavelength calibration and noise reduction for image data on Visible and Near-Infrared(VNIR) and Shortwave-Infrared(SWIR) band.

  • In this paper, a new approach to detect surface cracks from a noisy thermal image in the infrared thermography is presented using an holomorphic characteristic of temperature field in a thin plate under steady-state thermal condition. The holomorphic function for 2-D heat flow field in the plate was derived from Cauchy Riemann conditions to define a contour integral that varies according to the existence and strength of a singularity in the domain of integration. The contour integral at each point of thermal image eliminated the temperature variation due to heat conduction and suppressed the noise, so that its image emphasized and highlighted the singularity such as crack. This feature of holomorphic function was also investigated numerically using a simple thermal field in the thin plate satisfying the Laplace equation. The simulation results showed that the integral image selected and detected the crack embedded artificially in the plate very well in a noisy environment.

  • Infrared (IR) seeker identifies the location of a target by detecting the infrared energy radiated from the target, and enables the missile to track the target. To improve the tracking performance, a counter- countermeasure (CCM) is essential to minimize the effect of the countermeasure (CM), which is operated by a target to protect itself. In this paper, we propose a crossed array tracker (CAT) using two-color CCM algorithm. The CAT using the proposed algorithm shows better tracking performance by minimizing the effect of CM.

  • In this paper, we implement a multi-touch system using FIDR. The implementation consists of hardware manufacture and development of image processing system. In the hardware system, touch screen, infrared LED placements and infrared camera are made. The image processing procedure is to extract each pointer's coordinates from image data and includes binary-coding, noise-elimination, labeling and calculation of mass center. From the implementation, we are able to make a multi-touch system with considerably lower cost than the existing ones.
