The Levitation Mass Method: A Precision Mass and Force Measurement Technique

  • The present status and future prospects of the levitation mass method (LMM), a technique for precision mass and force measurement, are reviewed. In the LMM, the inertial force of a mass levitated using a pneumatic linear bearing is used as the reference force applied to the objects being tested, such as force transducers, materials, or structures. The inertial force of the levitated mass is measured using an optical interferometer. We have modified this technique for dynamic force calibration of impact, oscillation, and step loads. We have also applied the LMM to material testing, providing methods for evaluating material viscoelasticity under an oscillating or impact load, evaluating material friction, evaluating the biomechanics of a human hand, and generating and measuring micro-Newton-level forces.

A Calibration Technique for a Redundant IMU Containing Low-Grade Inertial Sensors

  • A calibration technique for a redundant inertial measurement unit (IMU) containing low-grade inertial sensors is proposed. In order to calibrate a redundant IMU that can detect and isolate faulty sensors, the fundamental coordinate frames in the IMU are defined and the IMU error is modeled based on the frames. Equations to estimate the error coefficients of the redundant IMU are formulated, and a test sequence using a 2-axis turntable is also presented. Finally, a redundant IMU with cone configuration is implemented using low-grade inertial sensors, and the performance of the proposed technique is verified experimentally.

  • This paper proposed the new HILS technique called Injection Method for Inertial Sensor Verification of high maneuvering missiles. The performance of Inertial Sensor is verified by Injection Method and traditional FMS Method. After all, Injection Method for Inertial Sensor has capability for various scenario and critical condition test.

  • In two-degree of freedom(TDOF) inertial sensors, two axes are mechanically correlated with each other. Fault source of one axis sensor may affect the other axis sensor, and therefore multiple fault detection and isolation(FDI) technique is required. Conventional FDI techniques using hardware redundancy need four TDOF inertial sensors for FDI. In this study, three TDOF inertial sensor redudancy case is considered, where conventional FDI technique can detect the fault, but cannot isolate the fault sensor. Hybrid FDI technique is proposed to solve this problem. Hybrid FDI technique utilizes the analytic redundancy by utilizing the unscented kalman filter as well as hardware redundancy for FDI. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed FDI technique, numerical simulations are performed using six degree of freedom nonlinear aircrft dynamics.

  • Here we consider the inertial effect in a horizontal mushy layer during solidification of a binary alloy. Using perturbation technique, we obtain two systems, one of zero order and the other of first order. We consider a mushy layer with an impermeable mush-liquid interface and of constant permeability. The analysis reveals that the effect of inertial parameter is stabilizing in the sense that the critical Rayleigh number at the onset of motion increases by the inertial effect.

  • In this paper, a redundancy management system for aircraft is studied, and FDI (Fault Detection and Isolation) algorithm of inertial sensor system is proposed. UAV system cannot allow triple or quadruple hardware redundancy due to the limitations on space and weight. In the UAV system with dual sensors, it is very difficult to identify the faulty sensor. Also, conventional FDI method cannot isolate multiple faults in a triple redundancy system. In this paper, hardware based FDI technique is proposed, which combines a parity equation approach with the wavelet based technique, which is a model-free FDI method. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed FDI method, numerical simulations are performed.

  • The inertial sensor errors in SDINS(Strapdown Inertial Navigation System) can be compensated by rotating the inertial measurement unit and it is called RINS(Rotational Inertial Navigation System). It is assumed that the error of the inertial sensor in RINS is a static bias. However, the error of the inertial sensor actually developed and produced is not a static bias due to the change of the temperature applied to the sensor and the influence of the earth's gravity acceleration. In this paper, we propose a six-position gyro bias calibration method to evaluate the gyro bias required for RINS and present the test results of applying it to a ring laser gyro inertial navigation system under development.

  • In this paper, we introduce new hybrid inertial contraction projection algorithms for solving variational inequality problems over the intersection of the fixed point sets of demicontractive mappings in a real Hilbert space. The proposed algorithms are based on the hybrid steepest-descent method for variational inequality problems and the inertial techniques for finding fixed points of nonexpansive mappings. Strong convergence of the iterative algorithms is proved. Several fundamental experiments are provided to illustrate computational efficiency of the given algorithm and comparison with other known algorithms

  • This paper presents the error parameter estimation technique for IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit) which is core sensor of INS(Inertial Navigation System) and verifies it via laboratory test. Firstly the error characteristic of gyroscope and accelerometer which is contained in IMU is examined and the error modelling is executed. The error of IMU can be divided into deterministic and random part, and the deterministic error can be divided into static and dynamic part. This paper consider the random part as constant. Secondly the error parameter estimation technique and following procedure for laboratory test is explained. Thirdly according to the test procedure the IMU test for static error is executed using 2-axis rate table and estimation result is presented with discussion about its validity.

Contrary to the conventional aircraft systems, UAV system cannot allow triple or quadruple hardware redundancy due to the limitations on space and weight. In the UAV system with dual sensors, it is very difficult to identify the faulty sensor. Also, conventional fault detection and isolation (FDI) method cannot isolate multiple faults in a triple redundancy system. In this paper, two FDI techniques are proposed. First, hardware based FDI technique is proposed, which combines a parity equation approach with a wavelet based technique. Second, analytic FDI technique based on the Kalman filter is proposed, which is a model-based FDI method utilizing the threshold value and the confirmation time. To provide the reference value for detecting the fault, residuals are calculated using the extended Kalman filter. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed FDI methods, numerical simulations are performed.
