One of drawbacks of the inertial impactor measurement is the required long sampling time (Keskinen et al., 1992). In a gravimetric method, an impaction substrate must be weighed and placed on the corresponding collection plate before being assembled. After sampling, the inertial impactor is disassembled and the collection plate is weighted again. The sampling time depends on the sampled particle mass because the collected particle mass must be sufficiently high to be measured by a sensitive microbalance. (omitted)

In this study, a new idea for developing a space scale for measuring mass in a microgravity environment was proposed by using the inertial force properties of an object to measure its mass. The space scale detected the momentum change of the specimen and reference masses by using a load-cell sensor as the force transducer based on Newton's laws of motion. In addition, the space scale calculated the specimen mass by comparing the inertial forces of the specimen and reference masses in the same acceleration field. By using this concept, a space scale with a capacity of 3 kg based on the law of momentum conservation was implemented and demonstrated under microgravity conditions onboard International Space Station (ISS) with an accuracy of ${\pm}1g$. By the performance analysis on the space scale, it was verified that an instrument with a compact size could be implemented and be quickly measured with a reasonable accuracy under microgravity conditions.
The negative stiffness of an active or semi-active damper system has been proven to be very effective in reducing dynamic response. Therefore, energy dissipation devices possessing negative stiffness, such as viscous inertial mass dampers (VIMDs), have drawn much attention recently. The control performance of the VIMD for cable vibration mitigation has already been demonstrated by many researchers. In this paper, a new optimal design procedure for VIMD parameters for taut cable vibration control is presented based on the fixed-points method originally developed for tuned mass damper design. A model consisting of a taut cable and a VIMD installed near a cable end is studied. The frequency response function (FRF) of the cable under a sinusoidal load distributed proportionally to the mode shape is derived. Then, the fixed-points method is applied to the FRF curves. The performance of a VIMD with the optimal parameters is subsequently evaluated through simulations. A taut cable model with a tuned VIMD is established for several cases of external excitation. The performance of VIMDs using the proposed optimal parameters is compared with that in the literature. The results show that cable vibration can be significantly reduced using the proposed optimal VIMD with a relatively small amount of damping. Multiple VIMDs are applied effectively to reduce the cable vibration with multi-modal components.
This paper presents a study on the development of a multi-sensing inertial sensor with a single mechanical structure, which can be used both as a gyroscope and an accelerometer. The proposed MEMS gyro-accelerometer is designed to detect the angular rate and the acceleration at the same time using two separate detection circuits for one proof mass. In this study, the detection and signal processing circuit for an effective signal processing of different inertial measurements is designed, fabricated, and tested. The experimental results show that the performances of the gyro-accelerometer have resolutions of 1mg and 0.025deg/sec and nonlinearities of less than 0.5% for the accelerometer and the gyroscope, respectively, which are similar results with those of sensors with different structures and different detection circuits. The size of the sensor is reduced almost by 50% comparing with the sensors of separated proof mass.

Engine is the main source of vibration that generates unwanted noise and vibration of vehicle chassis. Especially, in submarine applications, radiation of noise signatures can be detected at some distance away from the submarine using a sonar array. Thus quiet operation is crucial for submarine's survivability. This study addresses reduction of the force transmissibility originating from engines and transmitted to hull through engine mounts. An inertial damper, as an actuator of hybrid mount system, is addressed to reduce even further the level of vibration. Narrow band FxLMS algorithms are broadly used to cancel the vibration of engine mount because of its excellent performance of canceling narrow band noise. However, in real active dampers, the maximum displacement of damper mass is kinematically restricted. When the control input signal from the FxLMS algorithm exceeds this limitation, the damper mass will collide with the mechanical stops and results in many problems. Originated from these, a modified narrow band FxLMS algorithm based on the equalizer technique with the maximum allowable displacement of active damper mass is proposed in this study. Some simulation results showed that the propose algorithm is effective to suppress vibration of engine mount while ensuring given displacement constraint.

The dynamic response of the head arm assembly (HAA) of a hard disk drive to an impact load was obtained from a 3D non-linear finite element model using ANSYS/LS-DYNA and from experiments using a modified levitation mass method (LMM). In the finite element model, the impact load was created by modeling the mass as a rigid body and making it collide with the HAA. The velocity, displacement, acceleration, and inertial force of the mass were then obtained from the time history data of the finite element analysis. In the LMM, a mass that was levitated with an aerostatic linear bearing, and hence encountered negligible friction, was made to collide with the actuator arm, resulting in a dynamic bending test for the arm. During the collision, the Doppler frequency shift of the laser beam reflected from the mass was accurately measured with an optical interferometer. The velocity, displacement, acceleration, and inertial force of the mass were accurately calculated from the measured time-varying Doppler frequency shift. A good correlation between the experimental data and FEA results was observed. The FEA was also used to investigate the dynamic response of the HAA to impact by different masses.
Stance is defined as any state in which the total mass of the body is supported by the feet. In order to maintain stance, the sum of gravito-inertial forces acting on the body must be registered by equal and opposite forces at the region of contact between the organism and the support surface. Balance is controlled by applying forces to the surface of support so as to maintain the body's center of mass vertically above the feet. for a muIti-segment organism, there can be a variety of ways in which balance can be controlled, since movements of different body segments can have similar effects on the control of balance. In general, the organism tends to have a body configuration that is aligned with gravito-inertial force when there are no external forces acting on it. If any segments of the body are not aligned with gravito-inertial force vector, a torque on that segment would tend to move the body's center of mass. The maintenance of postural stability is accomplished in humans by a complex neural control system. This requires organizing integrating and acting upon visual, vestibular, and somatosensory input, providing orientation information to the postural control system. The information necessary to control and coordinate movement is provided by the visual sense of eye position with respect to the surrounding surface layout, the vestibular sense of head orientation in the gravito-inertial space, and the somatic sense of body segment position relative to one another and to the support surface. In this study, perception and action capability was examined from various points of view. The underlying assumption of the study was that the change of postural configuration could be effected by organism, environment and task goal.

In an effort to develop and implement an inertial balance with high performance, the response characteristics of a load cell, which are some of the critical parameters for optimal system design, were evaluated using a sample object of approximately 100 g under microgravity conditions. To this end, a 15-m drop-tower was used to produce microgravity conditions, and the response characteristics of the load cell were investigated in terms of the variations in the magnitude of the deceleration of the sample object, noting that the mass of a living animal should be determined in microgravity. An analysis of the ratio of the inertial forces clearly demonstrated that the average velocity of a load cell plate should be higher than 0.5 m/s to meet the design requirements.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the natural frequencies and mode shape of columns immersed in fluid. The beam model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertial and shear deformation. The eccentricity and rotatory inerital of the tip mass are taken into account . The governing differential equations forr the free vibrations of immersed columns are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditoins. The lowest four natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are calculated over a range of non-dimensional system parameters : the ratio of fluid depth to span length, the mass ratio, the dimensionless mass moment of inertial, and the eccentricity.
The present paper proposes a novel cableless magnetic actuator with a new propulsion module that exhibits a very high thrusting force. This actuator contains an electrical inverter that directly transforms DC from button batteries into AC. The electrical DC-AC inverter incorporates a mass-spring system, a reed switch, and a curved permanent magnet that switches under an electromagnetic force. The actuator is moved by the inertial force of the mass-spring system due to mechanical resonance energy. The experimental results show that the actuator is able to move upward at a speed of 33 mm/s when using 10 button batteries when pulling a 10 g load mass. This cableless magnetic actuator has several possible applications, including narrow-pipe inspection and maintenance.
