Interaction between closely-spaced buildings subject to earthquake induced strong ground motions, termed in the literature as "seismic pounding", occurs commonly during major seismic events in contemporary congested urban environments. Seismic pounding is not taken into account by current codes of practice and is rarely considered in practice at the design stage of new buildings constructed "in contact" with existing ones. Thus far, limited research work has been devoted to quantify the influence of slab-to-slab pounding on the inelastic seismic demands at critical locations of structural members in adjacent structures that are not aligned in series. In this respect, this paper considers a typical case study of a "new" reinforced concrete (R/C) EC8-compliant, torsionally sensitive, 7-story corner building constructed within a block, in bi-lateral contact with two existing R/C 5-story structures with same height floors. A non-linear local plasticity numerical model is developed and a series of non-linear time-history analyses is undertaken considering the corner building "in isolation" from the existing ones (no-pounding case), and in combination with the existing ones (pounding case). Numerical results are reported in terms of averages of ratios of peak inelastic rotation demands at all structural elements (beams, columns, shear walls) at each storey. It is shown that seismic pounding reduces on average the inelastic demands of the structural members at the lower floors of the 7-story building. However, the discrepancy in structural response of the entire block due to torsion-induced, bi-directionally seismic pounding is substantial as a result of the complex nonlinear dynamics of the coupled building block system.

Parabolic arch ribs are widely used in practical. In case of circular arch ribs. Inelastic in-plane buckling behaviors were investigated by Trahair(1996). Recently Yong-lin Pi & Bradford(2004) investigated about in-plane design equation for circular arch ribs. In $1970{\sim}1980$. In-plane buckling strength about parabolic arch ribs were studied by some japan researchers (Sinke, Kuranishi). Study results of Sinke & kuranishi are only valid for rise-span ratio $0.1{\sim}0.2$. In this paper. The researchers investigated about in-plane inelastic buckling behaviors of parabolic arch ribs having rise-span ratio from 0.1 to 0.4. From the results. When the rise-span ratio increase, flexural moments increase and influence of axial force to in-plane buckling strength decrease. Finally, buckling curves for parabolic arch ribs subjected distributed loading along the axis were suggested.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the inelastic behavior of reinforced high-strength concrete bridge columns. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model ol reinforcing steel. The smeared rack approach is incorporated. The increase of concrete strength due to the lateral confining reinforcement has been also taken into account to model the confined high-strength concrete. The proposed numerical method for the inelastic behavior of reinforced high-strength concrete bridge columns is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

This study evaluated the effect of vibration, level of lateral yielding strength, site conditions, ductility factor, strain-hardening ratio, and post-capping ratio of the strength limited bilinear SDF systems on the inelastic displacement ratio. The nonlinear response history analysis was conducted using 240 ground motions which were collected at the sites classified as site classes B, C, and D according to the NEHRP. To account for the P-$\Delta$ effects, this study considered negative stiffness ratios ranging from -0.1 to -0.5 of elastic stiffness. Four different damping ratios are used: 2, 5, 10, and 20%. From this study, an equation of inelastic displacement ratio was proposed using nonlinear regression analysis.

Service conditions for structures at elevated temperatures in nuclear power plant involve transient thermal and mechanical load levels that are severe enough to caeuse inelastic deformations due to creep and plasticity. Therefore, a systematic mehtod of inelastic analysis is needed for the design of structural components in nuclear poser plants subjected to such loading conditions. In the present investigation, the Chabodhe model, one of the unified viscoplastic constitutive equations, was selected for systematic inelastic analysis. The material response was integrated based on GMR ( generallized mid-point rule) time integral scheme and provided to ABAQUS as a material subroutine, UMAT program. By comparing results obtaned from uniaxial analysis using the developed UMAT program with those from Runge-Kutta solutions and experimentaiton, the validity of the adopted Chaboche model and the numerical stability and accuracy of the developed UMAT program were verified. In addition, the developed material subroutine was applied for uniaxial creep and tension analyses for the plate with a hole in the center. The application further demonstrates usefulness of the developed program.

The purpose of this paper is to present a design procedure of a friction damper for controlling elastic and inelastic responses of building structures under earthquake excitation. The equivalent damping and period increased by the friction damper are estimated using ATC-40 and ATC-55 procedures which provide equivalent linear system for bilinear one, and then a design formula to achieve target performance response level by the friction damper is presented. It is identified that there exists error between the responses obtained by this formula and by performing nonlinear analysis and the features of the error vary according to the hardening ratio, yield strength ratio, and structural period. Equations for compensating the error are proposed based on the least square method, and the results from numerical analysis indicate that the error is significantly reduced. The proposed formula can be used without much error for designing a friction damper for retrofitting a structure showing elastic or inelastic behavior.

In this study, tile performance of a passive tuned mass damper (TMD) and a semi-active tuned mass damper (STMD) was evaluated in terms of seismic response control of elastic and inelastic structures under seismic loads. First, elastic displacement spectra were obtained for the damped structures with a passive TMD, which was optimally designed using the frequency and damping ratio presented by previous study, and with a STMD proposed in this study. The displacement spectra confirm that STMD provides much better control performance than passive md with less stroke. Also, the robustness or the TMD was evaluated by off-tuning the frequency of the TMD to that of the structure. Finally, numerical analyses were conducted for an inelastic structure of which hysteresis was described by Bouc-Wen model and the results indicated that the performance of the passive TMD of which design parameters were optimized for a elastic structure considerably deteriorated when the hysteretic portion or the structural responses increased, while the STMD showed about 15-40% more response reduction than the TMD.
In this study, the effects of the inelastic shear behavior of beam-column joint and the vertical distribution of lateral load are evaluated considering higher modes on the response of RC OMRF using the pushover analysis. A structure used for the analysis was a 5-story structure located at site class SB and seismic design category C, which was designed in accordance with KBC2009. Bending moment-curvature relationship for beam and column was identified using fiber model. Also, bending moment-rotation relationship for beam-column joint was calculated using simple and unified joint shear behavior model and moment equilibrium relationship for the joint. The results of pushover analysis showed that, although the rigid beam-column joint overestimated the stiffness and strength of the structure, the inelastic shear behavior of beam-column joint could be neglected in the process of structural design since the average response modification factor satisfied the criteria of KBC2009 for RC OMRF independent to inelastic behavior of joint.
Previous experimental researches indicate that reinforced concrete beam-column joints play an important role in the mechanical properties of moment resisting frame structures, so as to require proper design. In order to get better understanding of the beam-column joint performance, a rational model needs to be developed. Based on the former considerations, two typical models for calculating the shear carrying capacity of the beam-column joint including the inelastic reinforced concrete joint model and the softened strut-and-tie model are selected to be introduced and analyzed. After examining the applicability of two typical models mentioned earlier to interior beam-column joints, several adjustments are made to get better predicting of the test results. For the softened strut-and-tie model, four adjustments including modifications of the depth of the diagonal strut, the inclination angle of diagonal compression strut, the smeared stress of mild steel bars embedded in concrete, as well as the softening coefficient are made. While two adjustments for the inelastic reinforced concrete joint model including modifications of the confinement effect due to the column axial load and the correction coefficient for high concrete are made. It has been proved by test data that predicted results by the improved softened strut-and-tie model or the modified inelastic reinforced concrete joint model are consistent with the test data and conservative. Based on the test results, it is also not difficult to find that the improved beam-column joint model can be used to predict the joint carrying capacity and cracks development with sufficient accuracy.

The three dimensional inelastic response characteristics of the standard school buildings depending on hysteresis models are reviewed. Three artificial earthquake records in accordance with KBC(Korea Building Code) are used and the inelastic response characteristics such as story shear force, story drift ratio, story displacement, hinge distribution state are reviewed with four hysteresis models. As results, story shear force is increased by maximum 27% and story drift ratio is increased by maximum 30% according to hysteresis models. Modified Takeda Model shows maximum story shear and story drift raio in longitudinal and short direction, expecting higher safety. Story shear shows minimum value with Clough Model in both directions and story drift ratio shows minimum with Takeda model in longitudinal and with Clough model in short direction, so these models are expected to decrease the safety ratio.
