Firefighters wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for protection from environmental hazards. However, due to the layers of protective functions, the PPE inevitably adds excessive weight, bulkiness, and thermal stress to firefighters. This study investigated the adverse impact of wearing PPE as an occupational stressor on the firefighter's cognitive functioning. Twenty-three firefighters who had been involved in firefighting at least for 1 year were recruited. The overall changing trend in the firefighter's cognitive functioning (short-term memory, long-term memory, and inductive reasoning) was measured by the scores of three standardized cognitive tests at the baseline and the follow-up, after participating in a moderate-intensity physical activity, wearing a full ensemble of the PPE. The study findings evinced the negative impact of the PPE on the firefighter's cognitive functioning, especially in short-term memory and inductive reasoning. No significant influence was found on the firefighter's long-term memory. The results were consistent when the participant's age and BMI were controlled. The outcomes of the present study will not only fill the gap in the literature, but also provide critical justification to stakeholders, including governments, policymakers, academic communities, and industry, for such efforts to improve human factors of the firefighter's PPE by realizing the negative consequences of the added layers and protective functions on their occupational safety. Study limitations and future directions were also discussed.
The purpose of this research was to investigate effects of glycyrrhizin on the differentiation of preadipocytes, 3T3-Ll cells and to characterize the action of glycyrrhizin that affect the responses of 3T3-Ll cells during differentiation. The differentiation of 3T3-Ll cells was stimulated by glycyrrhizin, and triglyceride contents was increased in the differentiated 3T3-LI cell extracts. Total protein contents was increased by glycyrrhizin or inductive agents in the differentiated 3T3-Ll cell extracts. Calmodulin contents was increased by inductive agents, but the contents was not affected by glycyrrhizin in the differentiated 3T3-Ll cell extracts. The results suggest that glycyrrhizin has a stimulating activity of adipose conversion, but the activity is not related to calmodulin contents during the process of differentiation of 3T3-LI cells.
This study was carried out to investigate the anticarcinogenic and antioxidative activities of Hemicentrotus pulacherrimus (HP). HP was extracted with methanol (HPM), which was then further fractionated into four sub-fractions by using the solvent partition method, affording methanol (HPMM), hexane (HPMH), butanol (HPMB) and aqueous (HPMA) soluble fractions. We determined the anticarcinogenic activities of these four fractions in four kinds of cancer cell lines, such as HepG2, HT29, MCF-7 and B16-F10, by MTT assay. Among various fractions from HPM, the HPMH showed the strongest growth inhibition effect. We also determined the inductive effect on quinone reductase (QR) of HP fractions. HPMB fraction exhibited strong inductive effects in HepG2 cells at a level of 90 ${\mu}g/ml$, showing inductive indexes of 2.26 compared to the control value of 1.0. The antioxidant activities of fractions from HP were also investigated by measuring the scavenging activities of HP against reactive oxygen speicies (ROS), peroxynitrite (ONOO-) and NO. Among the various solvent fractions, HPMH fractions displayed marked antioxidative activities.

This study was performed to elucidate anticancer activities of various parts, such as peel, flesh, placenta, seed, stalk and stem leaf of oriental melon. Chemopreventive and anticancer effects of oriental melon extract were evaluated by detoxifying enzyme, quinone reductase (QR) inductive activity, cytotoxicity and growth inhibitory effect against hepatoma cell. Stalk and stem leaf extracts of oriental melon showed the increment of QR inductive activity with dose-dependent manner and induced quinone reductase 3.9, 1.5-fold at $200{\mu}g/mL$ respectively compared to control. The growth inhibitory effect of oriental melon extract against mouse hepatoma cell (Hepa1c1c7) was investigated by crystal violet (CV) assay. Stalk and stem leaf of oriental melon showed potent growth inhibitory effect. Based on these result, the growth inhibitory effects of stalk, stem leaf at various concentration were examined in detail by MTT assay using human hepatoma cancer cell (HepG2). All of two parts showed growth inhibitory effects and expecially stalk exhibited inhibitory effect of 60.3% at maximum concentration. The above results suggest that stalk of oriental melon has a possibility as a source of natural cancer chemopreventive materials.
Strong solid acid catalysts, NiO/Al2O3-TiO2/WO3 for ethylene dimerization were prepared by the addition of Al2O3 and the modification with WO3. The acid sites and acid strength were increased by the inductive effect of WO3 species bonded to the surface of catalysts. The larger the dispersed WO3 amount, the higher both the acidity and catalytic activity for ethylene dimerization. The addition of Al2O3 to TiO2 up to 5 mol% enhanced acidity and catalytic activity gradually due to the interaction between Al2O3 and TiO2 and consequent formation of Al-O-Ti bond.
Vibrio vulnificus, a Gram-negative estuarine bacterium, is the causative agent of food-borne diseases, such as life-threatening septicemia. V. vulnificus penetrating into the intestinal epithelial barrier stimulates an inflammatory response in the adjacent intestinal mucosa. Therefore, interaction between V. vulnificus and intestinal cells is important for understanding of both the immunology of mucosal surfaces and V. vulnificus. In this study we investigated the effects of V. vulnificus infection on cytokine gene expression of human intestinal epithelial cells, Caco-2 and INT-407 cells. (omitted)
Series of new chiral N-substituted benzotriazol-1-yl derivatives were synthesized and their fungicidal activities in vitro against gray mold(Botrytis cinerea), black spot(Alternaria kikuchiana) and phytophthora blight(Phytophthora capsici) were measured by the agar medium dilution method. The substituents effects between the fungicidal activities (obs. $pI_{50}$) and a various physicochemical parameters of phenoxy or thiophenoxy group(X) & alkyl or phenyl group(Y) were analyzed by the multiple regression technique. From the analyzed substituent effects, the structure-activity relationship(SAR) equations shows that the antifungal activities depend on the parameters for the optimal molecular hydrophobicity($({\Sigma}logP)_{opt}$), Van der Waals (${\Sigma}Vw$>0) volume(${\AA}^3$) and inductive constant with electron withdrawing group(${\sigma}_I$,Y>0). The activity in affected by the inductive effect (${\sigma}_I$,Y>${\sigma}_g$X) of Y-group rather than the X-group. The phenoxy substituents, 1, showed higher antifungal activity tn the thiophenoxy substituents, 2. For 1, polar substituent constant(${\sigma}^*$) was an important factor in determining the activity. And the tribromomethyl substituent, 1g showed the highest activity against the tee fungi.
The study tries to differentiate the levels of mathematical reasoning from inductive reasoning to formal reasoning for teaching gradually. Because the formal point of view without the relation to objects has limitations in the creation of a new knowledge, our mathematics education needs consider the such characteristics. We propose an intuitive level of proof related in concrete operations and perceptual experiences as an intermediating step between inductive and formal reasoning. The key activity of the intuitive level is having insight on the generality of reasoning. The details of the process should pursuit the direction for going away from objects and near to formal reasoning. We need teach the mathematical reasoning gradually according to the appropriate level of reasoning more differentiated.

Implanted telemetry systems provide the ability to monitor different species of animals while they move within their cages. Species monitored include mice, rats, rabbits, dogs, pigs, primates, sheep, horses, cattle, and others. A miniature transmitter implanted in each animal measures one or more parameters. Parameters measured include arterial pressure, intra-pleural pressure, left ventricular pressure, intra-ocular pressure, bladder pressure, ECG, EMG, EEG, EOG, temperature, activity, and other parameters and transmits the data via radio frequency signals to a nearby receiver. Every conventional dedicated transmitter contains one or more sensors, cpu and battery. Due to the expected life of the battery, the measuring time is limited. To overcome these problems, electromagnetic inductive coupling based wireless power transmission technology using multiple transmit coils were proposed, with each coil having a different active area driven by the coil driver. In this research, a parallel resonance based coil driver and serial resonance based coil driver are proposed. From the experiments we see that the parallel coil driver shows better performance under a low impedance and multiple coils configuration. However, the serial coil driver is more efficient for high impedance transmit coils.
TK6 was able to produce NAD+ dependent cyclohexanol dehydrogenase(CDH). The production of CDH was increased rapidly at the logarithmic phase and maintained constantly after that. In order to investigate the inductive production of CDH by various substrates, the bacteria were grown in the media containing alicyclic hydrocarbons and various alcohols as a sole crabon souce. CDH was induced most actively by cyclohexanol. Cyclohexanone and cyclohexane-1,2-diol also induced remarkable amount of CDH but it was induced weakly by 1-propanol, 1-butanol, 1-pentanol, 1-hexanol, 2-propanol, and 2-methyl-1-propanol. The dehydrogenase of the bacteria grown in the media containing cyclohexanol were weakly active for various alcohols, but the dehydrogenase activity for cyclohexane-1,2-diol was twice as much as that for cyclohexanol. Activity staining on PAGE of the cell free extract of Rhodococcus sp. TK6 grown in the media containing cyclohexanol reveals at least sever isozyme bands of CDH and we nominated the four major activity bands as CDH I, II, III, and IV. CDH I was strongly induced by cyclohexanol, cyclohexane-1,2-diok, but its activity was specific to cyclohexane-1,2-diol and 1-pentanol. CDH IV was strongly induced by cyclohexanol and cyclohexane-1,2-diol, and its activity was very specific to cyclohexane-1,2-diol.
