  • A comparative study on dynamic and static measurement of initial stiffness was conducted. Because soil stiffness decreases even at very small strains, the initial stiffness has been measured by dynamic tests using shear wave velocity measurement. On the other hand, due to the advance of local strain measurement, the triaxial testing device is capable of measuring the static initial stiffness. It has been known that initial stiffness measured by static triaxial tests is generally lower than that measured by dynamic tests possibly due to the limitation of static measurement of displacement at very small strains. This study presents experimental results indicating that the elastic shear moduli could be the same both in dynamic and static measurements owing to the soil anisotropy induced by anisotropic stresses.

  • The effects of annealing with and without magnetic field on magnetic properties of amorphous Fe-B-Si cores have been investigated as a function of toroidal stress. By decreasing the toroidal stress, the magnetic properties of the amorphous ribbon have beenimproved. Near 180 domain walls exist in the thermally annealed toroidal cores, but the domain walls exist in the thermally annealed toroidal cores, but the domain walls are not parallel to the longitudinal direction of the ribbon. In the specimen annealed with a magnetic field strength of 10 Oe in the longitudinal ribbon length axis, the domains are nearly parallel to the longitudinal direction due to the field induced uniaxial anisotropy resulting in further increase in the remanent magnetization and decrease in the coercive force and loss.

  • We synthesized the photoresponsive side chain polymers containing aminonitro azobenzene for studying the effect of temperature on photoinduced birefringence. Four different copolymers were prepared using methacrylate, α-methylstyrene, and itaconate monomer. Photoisomerization was observed under the exposure of UV light using UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy. Reorientation of polar azobenzene molecules induced optical anisotropy under a linearly polarized light at 532 nm. The change of the birefringence was observed with increasing the sample temperature under a continuous irradiation of excitation light. We could estimate the activation energy of molecular motion in thermal and photochemical mode. Besides the effect of glass transition temperature on the activation energy, we focused our interests on the effect of geometrical hindrance of polar azobenzene molecules and cooperative motion of environmental mesogenic molecules in the vicinity of polar azobenzene molecules.

  • The polarized micro-photoluminescence spectrum was analyzed to investigate the anisotropic localized states in a single GaAs quantum ring. An energy difference of ~0.1 meV was observed from the perpendicularly polarized spectrum measured by a pair of linear analyzers. Spectral dependence of the polarized emission was also characterized in terms of rotation and ellipticity angles using four Stokes parameters. While the rotation angle indicates the symmetric axis of an anisotropic quantum ring with a small variation (± 2°), the ellipticity angle varies from 7.4° down to -2.5°. We conclude that optical anisotropy and birefringence are induced by the crescent-like lateral shape of localized states.

  • Melt-textured YBCO in high quantity and good quality is prepared in a batch process. A mean trapped field >1. IT at 77K is achieved in batch processed material. Studying the microstructure is a necessary tool to understand the growth mechanisms and thus to opimise the material. From the growth induced structures in the material the anisotropy in growth speed is 1.37. From batch processed material function elements for different cryomagnetic applications are constructed. Motors with an output power > 200 kW at 77 K and bearings that can lift more than 200 kg were equipped with melt-textured YBCO.

  • The acquisition and processing of long-offset data are essential for imaging deep geological structures in marine seismic surveys. It is challenging to derive an accurate subsurface image by employing conventional data processing to long-offset data owing to the normal moveout (NMO) stretch and non-hyperbolic moveout phenomena induced by seismic anisotropy. In 2017, the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources conducted a simultaneous two-dimensional multichannel streamer and ocean-bottom seismic survey using a 5.7-km streamer and an ocean-bottom seismometer to identify the deep geological structure of the Ulleung Basin. Herein, the actual geological subsurface structure was obtained via the sequential iterative updating of the velocity and anisotropic parameters of the long-offset data obtained using a multichannel streamer, and anisotropic prestack Kirchhoff migration was performed using the updated velocity and anisotropic parameters as input parameters. As a result, the reflection energy in the long-offset traces, which showed non-hyperbolic moveout owing to seismic anisotropy, was well aligned horizontally and NMO stretches were also reduced. Thus, a more precise and accurate migrated image was obtained, minimizing the distortion of reflectors and mispositioned reflection energy.

  • Orientations of liquid crystal molecules on a surface of a film of photoreactive polyvinylcinnamate were investigated in order to apply as an alignment layer of LCD. When the polyvinylcinnamate film was exposed to linearly polarized W light, optical anisotropy was induced in the film through a selective photoreaction. Liquid crystal molecules on a surface of the film was aligned along the oriented polymer chain direction through intermolecular interactions. Thermal and light stability of the photoaligned LC cell were studied by investigating LC alignment changes after the alignment layer was treated with heat and W light. When the film was exposed with linearly polarized UV several times, the LC alignment was induced only along the final UV exposure direction.

  • In order to ultrasonically evaluate creep cavities pure copper samples were subjected to creep test and their microstructures were examined. Ultrasonic velocities. frequency-dependent magnitude spectra and attenuations were measured on a series of copper samples obtained from the different stages of creep test. Velocities measured in three directions with respect to the loading axis decreased and their anisotropy increased as a function of the creep-induced porosity. The anisotropic behavior could be attributed to the progressive change of pore shape and preferred orientation as the creep advanced. The 2% porosity by volume decreased the longitudinal and shear wave velocities by 11% and 4%, respectively. Furthermore, both velocities decreased nonlinearly with the porosity. As the creep damage developed, the magnitude spectra lost high frequency components and their central frequencies shifted to lower values. The attenuation showed almost linear behavior in the frequency range used. Normalized velocity, central frequency shift and attenuation slope were selected as nondestructive evaluation parameters. These results were presented and showed good relations with the porosity content.

  • Two-photon resonant third photon ionization of atomic bromine $(4p^5\;^2P_{3/2}\;and\;^2P_{1/2})$ has been studied using a photoelectron imaging spectroscopy in the wavelength region 250 - 278 nm. The technique has yielded simultaneously both relative branching ratios to the three levels of $Br^+(^3P_2,\;^3P_{0.1}\;and^1D_2)$ with $4p^4$ configuration and the angular distributions of outgoing photoelectrons. The product branching ratios reveal a strong propensity to populate particular levels in many cases. Several pathways have been documented for selective formation of $Br^+(^3P_2)$ and $Br^+(^3P_{0.1})$ ions. In general, the final ion level distributions are dominated by the preservation of the ion core configuration of a resonant excited state. Some deviations from this simple picture are discussed in terms of the configuration interaction of resonant states and the autoionization in the continuum. The photoelectron angular distributions are qualitatively similar for all transitions, with a positive $A_2$ anisotropy coefficient of 1.0-2.0 and negligible $A_4$ in most cases, which suggests that the angular distribution is mainly determined by the single-photon ionization process of a resonant excited state induced from the third photon absorption.
