  • A tunable filter incorporating an apodized grating with a high-refractive-index polymer layer is demonstrated. In the apodized tunable filter, the reflectivity is decreased compared to that of a uniform grating, because of the gradually decreased grating depth. To increase the reflectivity of the apodized grating, a polymer of high refractive index is adopted for the apodized grating, and then high reflectivity is obtained while maintaining a narrow bandwidth. The apodized tunable filter exhibits a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.51 nm and a 20-dB bandwidth of 1.05 nm, with 98.5% reflection.

  • We proposed and demonstrated a simultaneous measurement method to detect the refractive index and temperature of a medium using a side-polished fiber involving FBG (fiber Bragg grating). The temperature of a medium was obtained by using the Bragg wavelength shift of FBG, while the refractive index of medium were calculated by using the transmission loss. The Bragg wavelength is independent on the refractive index of the covering medium placed on surface of side-polished fiber, while the transmission loss at off-Bragg wavelength highly depends on the environmental temperature because of thermo-optic effect of the medium.

  • A new hardware compensation method reducing displacement measurement errors, caused by tilt of index scale in moire linear encoders, has been developed. In conventional moire linear encoders, the detectors are aligned perpendicular to the line of moire fringes this structure is very sensitive to an unwanted tilt of the gratings. In this paper, a newly designed grating, called a phase-modulated grating, is developed to compensate for non-orthogonal errors. By using the phase-modulated grating instead of a conventional index, it is possible to reduce non-orthogonal errors of moire linear encoders.

  • The operating characteristics, such as, the threshold gain, lasing frequency, and longitudinal intensity profile, etc., of 1.55$\mu$m DFB laser diode with index and/or gain grating structures and with one side AR-coated mirror have been analyzed. From this analysis, the optimum design parameters have been shown that ${\Delta}{\Omega}$ (the phase difference between index grating and gain grating) is 0 or ${\pi}$, (xL)$_{r}$=1~3 and (xL)$_{i}$=0.5~0.9. It has been also shown that the modal selectivity and intensity uniformity of the DFB lasers with .DELTA..OMEGA.=0 are ~1.2 times better thatn those of the DFB lasers with ${\Delta}{\Omega}$= ${\pi}$.

  • In this paper we will show theoretically that a refractive index grating exhibits a retro-self-focusing effect and an accompanying pinholing effect under the Gaussian intensity distribution of an incident optical field. Those effects result from an effective wave number change of the medium due to the intense optical field.

  • Lasers for optical broadband communication systems should have excellent frequency selectivity and modal stability. DFB(Distributed Feedback) lasers have low lasing frequency shift during high speed current modulation. In this paper, I have developed a simulation software and analysed threshold gain and lasing frequency of a lasing mode in longitudinal direction of an 1.55um DFB laser with two mirrors and without anti-reflection coatings, that have both an index- and gain-gratings. The grating phase on a left mirror face is fixed as π/2 and the grating phase on a right mirror face is varied. As the phases of the index and gain gratings on the right mirror facet are π and 0, κL should be in the range of 2~6 in order to enhance the frequency stability. In order to reduce the threshold current of a lasing mode, κL should be greater than 8, regardless of the grating phases on the mirror faces.

  • We propose a simple nondestructive method to obtain refractive-index profiles of a graded-index (GRIN) light-focusing rod by means of a diffraction grating. In our proposed method, a laser beam is illuminated through a diffraction grating perpendicular to the axis of the GRIN lens and the separation between the zeroth and first-order diffraction peaks is measured and analyzed. The results demonstrate that the refractive-index profiles of commercially available GRIN lenses can be successfully reconstructed.

  • In this paper, we report numerically calculated results of testing a temperature-insensitive refractive sensor based on a planar-type long-period waveguide grating (LPWG). The LPWG consists of properly chosen polymer materials with an optimized thermo-optic coefficient for the core layer in a four-layer waveguide structure. The resonant wavelength shift below the spectral resolution of the conventional optical spectrum analyzer is obtained accurately over a temperature change of ${\pm}7.5^{\circ}C$ even without any temperature control. The refractive index sensitivity of the proposed grating scheme is about 0.004 per resonant wavelength shift of 0.1 nm for an optimized thermo-optic coefficient.

  • Fiber Bragg grating which has a blazed ang1e to the plane of incident wave generates a side-mode as well as main-mode. The side-mode has an identical characteristics with a long period grating that couples with a cladding mode, so rejects the special wavelength. We experimented on the side-mode characteristics with two fibers which Ge doped depressed index fiber and very high photosensitive H$_2$ loaded step index fiber according to the tilted angle. Also, using a phase mask equipped with rotation plate which has 0.02$^{\circ}$ resolution, we can control the bandwidth and the peak value of a total loss spectrum by aligned tilted grating in a fiber and using this, tried to compose the ASE band rejection filter of the Erbium doped fiber amplifier.

  • A new method to control the free spectral range of a long period fiber grating is proposed and theoretically analyzed. As the refractive index decreases radially outward in the silica cladding due to graded doping of fluorine, waveguide dispersion in the cladding modes was modified to result in the effective indices change and subsequently the phase matching conditions for coupling with the core mode in a long period fiber grating. Enlargement of the free spectral range in a long period fiber grating was theoretically confirmed.
